Ann Doan Dedicated care and support for you and your baby Choosing the right maternity unit to have your baby is an important decision. You need to feel completely comfortable and at ease throughout your pregnancy, so when it comes to your due date, you will be confident that you have all of the dedicated care and support you need. The Westminster Maternity Suite at St Thomas Hospital, is one of the best maternity services in London. The Suite has been recently refurbished and is located on the 12th floor of St Thomas Hospital, overlooking Parliament and Westminster and offers state-of-the-art facilities, a dedicated team, and is just a few floors away from our main birth centre and baby unit. Our rooms are designed to create an air of relaxation and calm, with en-suite facilities and modern furniture. So you can simply relax and let our dedicated obstetricians, midwives and neonatologists guide you through your pregnancy, giving you all the support you need at one of the most treasured times in life. Our location Situated in the heart of London, the Westminster Maternity Suite is located on the 12th floor of the north wing of the world-renowned St Thomas Hospital. When you choose to have your baby in our highly acclaimed Suite, you will be choosing a historic, landmark setting with exceptional views overlooking Parliament and Westminster. A perfect setting for what is sure to be a historic moment for you and your partner as you welcome your new baby into the world. With its central London location, St Thomas is served with excellent transport links and easily accessible by public transport, rail and road so you can rest assured that there are many options for you to get to the hospital with plenty of time. Our history An enviable reputation for medical innovation Guy s and St Thomas is world-renowned for medical breakthroughs and innovation, and the hospitals have a long and proud history. Our team of dedicated professionals continue to live up to these pioneering traditions through their commitment to clinical excellence and world leading research. The private maternity service offered by St Thomas has been established for over 20 years and was originally set up by Mary Lansdell, a senior midwife on the unit who had a vision of setting up a private maternity facility. The unit has continued to grow and develop, culminating in the excellent range of care that is supported today by our multi-disciplinary team. There are over 7,000 babies delivered in the maternity unit each year, and the highly skilled team have dealt with both straightforward and complex pregnancies. 1 2

Our team of experts At the Westminster Maternity Suite, our team of obstetricians, midwives, neonatologists, maternity support workers and administrative staff make all of the difference. It is their combined dedication and passion which helps us deliver the highest standards of care. So you can rest assured that you and your baby will be well looked after throughout the changing stages of your pregnancy. Our dedicated team work closely together. All our highly trained members of staff have recognised credentials and proven experience in their field. Consultant Obstetricians Obstetricians are doctors who specialise in pregnancy and childbirth. Our obstetric team are experts at providing you with the care and support you need throughout your pregnancy and delivery. Our team of consultant obstetricians are leaders in their field, with many holding senior positions within the Trust. All of our deliveries are consultant-led, which means you will have direct access to your chosen consultant throughout your pregnancy and you will be seen by the same consultant for all of your clinic appointments. We also have a team of doctors available 24 hours a day on site who are also available if needed during your stay. Consultant Anaesthetists Anaesthetists are doctors who specialise in pain relief during labour and are on hand to ensure that your birth is as comfortable as possible. Our team of consultant anaesthetists are available to administer additional levels of pain relief if required to ensure that you are safely and comfortably looked after. Consultant Neonatologists A neonatologist is responsible for the care of all newborn babies who need extra support shortly after birth. We have a team of consultant neonatologists at the Westminster Maternity Suite who can perform routine newborn examinations. All of our consultants also work on the Neonatal Unit (NNU) at Evelina London Children s Hospital which is located within St Thomas Hospital. The NNU is one of the busiest in the country, with 13 consultants in a range of clinical and academic roles, 25 junior doctors and 132 nursing staff. They specialise in the care of very premature babies, babies with severe cardiac conditions and other complex problems of the newborn. Midwives Our experienced midwives play a vital role in both yours and your baby s care throughout your pregnancy. They are trained to prepare you for the arrival of your little one and you will have a dedicated midwife providing you with personalised care during the delivery, as well as providing expert postnatal care for when your baby is born. In addition, we also have midwife clinics for all patients before the birth so that you will get a chance to meet the team and discuss your birth plan, breastfeeding and your care. Our midwives are supported by a senior midwife who is highly experienced in midwifery and has undertaken additional specialist training. Customer Services Team We have a dedicated administration and finance team who are available seven days a week on the Westminster Maternity Suite to assist you during your stay with us. They are here to ensure that all finance, booking and related queries are taken care of in a smooth and timely manner. They will be on hand to assist with scheduling appointments, making payments or any general enquiries you may have. Our consultant neonatologists will complete a full examination of your baby prior to being discharged from the unit, giving you peace of mind when you leave to spend your first nights at home. 3 4

Once you have booked your place on the unit you will have direct access to the team of midwives who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to support you in your pregnancy if you have any concerns. We pride ourselves on the fact that should you or your baby require specialist clinical support, you will also have access to our expert clinicians and specialist onsite facilities within Evelina London Children s Hospital and St Thomas. Antenatal care To ensure you and your baby are healthy throughout your pregnancy, an appointment will be made for you to see your consultant once every four weeks until you reach 32 weeks. After 32 weeks, you will see your consultant fortnightly and then weekly as a minimum. This can differ for some patients who may need more frequent appointments. You will also meet with our dedicated midwife team in the midwife clinics, giving you the opportunity to discuss your birth plans, what pain relief you would like and helpful tips on breastfeeding techniques. You can also use this time to take a tour around the Westminster Maternity Suite so you can see all the 5 6

Your specialist birthing choices Dedicated support in an emergency A range of birthing choices to give you complete freedom At the Westminster Maternity Suite we offer a range of birthing options that are tailored to our patients requirements. Our team of consultants will go through the different types of birthing choices that you would like. The type of births we offer are natural delivery with or without an epidural, through to a caesarean section. Normal birth Normal birth is vaginal delivery that takes place naturally. With the help of your consultant and individual midwife, they will look after you and help you to achieve a normal birth. You have a choice of pain relief, including an epidural that is available to you during your labour. Our state-of-the-art facilities and reputation as one of the world s leading hospitals ensures that you and your baby are in the best possible hands should an emergency arise. Your care and safety is our primary concern and we have dedicated teams to look after you every step of the way. For peace of mind, we also have the additional support of our pregnancy assessment and birthing facilities in the same building just two floors away. So no matter what happens, we have the leading facilities to give you any additional care that may be required. Assisted birth An assisted birth is when you may need additional support through your labour if you are pushing well during the birthing stage of labour but the baby is making slow progress. A range of birthing choices to give you complete freedom Caesarean section This is a surgical operation where your baby is born through a cut in the abdominal wall. The cut is usually along the top of the pubic hairline, so the scar can be well hidden when healed. It is always performed in an operating theatre, and the midwife, obstetrician and anaesthetist will be with you at all times. For all types of birth you will always have a midwife, your birth partner and your consultant present. An anaesthetist will be available should you require any additional pain relief. 7 8

Your stay State-of-the-art facilities to keep you comfortable and relaxed When admitted to the Suite, you will be made to feel completely at home so you are relaxed and ready to have your baby. With expert teams on hand and access to state-of-the-art facilities you can be assured of added safety and support at every stage. Dedicated midwifery and obstetrician care at delivery You will have your own dedicated midwife to look after you throughout delivery. During the postnatal period, you will have high level of care and attention with two midwives looking after our six-bed ward at any one time. They will be supported by healthcare assistants who will go to extraordinary lengths to keep you comfortable and ensure that you have everything you need. A true home from home Within the beautifully designed Westminster Maternity Suite we offer the highest standard of accommodation across our six private, individual air conditioned rooms to ensure you have all of the comfort and peace you need. Each room has recently been refurbished and is designed to make you feel as relaxed and comfortable as you can with en-suite facilities, TV, Wi-Fi and new guest beds so your partner can stay with you and get some rest too. A room with a view Boasting an enviable location on the 12th floor of St Thomas Hospital overlooking Parliament and Westminster, the Suite is wonderfully located in the heart of central London. You and your guests will also have access to our new in-house catering facilities which means you can order food whenever you would like and it is all prepared on-site. For your added convenience there are also a number of on-site facilities including an M&S shop, M&S Café, Shepherd Hall restaurant and a range of retail outlets including WHSmith, a fashion retailer, gift shop, NatWest Bank and a hairdresser. All packed and ready to go A toiletry bag with soap, shampoo, conditioner, sanitary pads and disposable pants are available for you at the hospital. What you will need to bring for your baby You will be provided with essentials for your baby during your stay. You will need to bring with you baby clothing and equipment to bring your baby home, for example a car seat. Healthy eating To ensure you are ready to go once your labour starts, we recommend packing a bag in advance. To help you with what to pack, here is a list of all of the things you will need. At least three changes of nightwear (cotton is preferable) Front opening night wear is convenient if you intend to breastfeed Slippers Bathrobe/dressing gown CD player and CDs if you would like music Your camera and/or video Small natural sponge or face flannel Lip balm Pair of loose fitting socks Hairband to keep hair off your face We have made significant improvements in the standard and quality of the food offered to our private maternity patients and their guests. So when you stay with us, you can look forward to healthy and nutritional food, prepared by our skilled team. Our in-house catering team work on the Suite, preparing meals to order - using the freshest ingredients. This service is available for you and your guests. Please inform the catering team in advance if you have any special requests. 9 10

Making a booking Booking with us is very simple. 1 Select your consultant and contact his/her secretary to arrange an appointment. 2 Contact reception to confirm your booking by completing our booking form. All our consultant obstetricians accept late bookings and international patients. Travelling to St Thomas Westminster Maternity Suite 12th Floor, North Wing Guy s and St Thomas Hospital Westminster Bridge Road London SE1 7EH By tube The nearest tube stations are: Westminster - District, Circle and Jubilee lines (10 mins walk) Waterloo - Bakerloo, Jubilee and Northern lines (15 mins walk) Lambeth North - Bakerloo line (15 mins walk) By train Waterloo, Waterloo East, are the nearest railway stations, 10-15 mins walk away. Victoria and Charing Cross are also close, 20-30 mins walk. 13 By car St Thomas Hospital is located in the Congestion Charging zone. Please use public transport whenever possible. Parking for patients and visitors is very limited and there is often a queue. The car park is pay on foot, which means you need to pay and get your exit ticket before returning to your car. Please have the correct change. Parking charges The car park is open 24 hours a day. For information on charges please call the unit on 020 7188 3457. Charging exceptions Disabled patients are given free parking in the main car park upon production of their blue badge registered in their name along with an appointment card.
