SPEARMAN STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION MEMORANDUM TO: FROM: District Instructional Leaders Dr. Anne Pressley Director, Office of Standards and Learning DATE: RE: K 12 Science Summer Institute 2018/Fall Semester Series 2018-19 The Office of Standards and Learning will offer a free, hybrid professional learning summer institute/fall semester series designed to cultivate a professional learning community of science educators who will be better prepared to use the 2014 South Carolina Academic Standards and Performance Indicators for Science in the classroom. Participation in this institute will afford attendees the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the following: 3-Dimensional nature of science learning: Content, Science and Engineering Practices, and Crosscutting Concepts, applications of the science standards and support documents to the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate, scientific phenomena, and the engineering and design process. Throughout the four-day summer institute and the fall series, participants will refine their practice through ongoing virtual and face-to-face sessions, designed to support their application of new knowledge in the classroom and their evaluation of its impact on student learning. Participants will further apply their knowledge and understanding with their students through engaging in the fall series. Page 2 Participants must attend all four days of summer institute face-to-face meetings (Part One), and complete all additional virtual work after the institute. Participants will then select one location to engage in the fall semester series that consist of four face to face days with virtual work (Part Two). General Information Participants should plan to arrive and sign in each day between 8:30 8:45 a.m. The summer institute face-to-face sessions on Monday and Thursday will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. and
Page 5 conclude by 4:00 p.m. The sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will have extended hours based on field experiences. Participants should bring the 2014 South Carolina Academic Standards and Performance Indicators for Science as well as electronic devices, a notebook, and writing utensil. Lunch will be provided Monday through Thursday. The fall series face-to-face sessions will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. and conclude by 4:00 p.m. Participants should plan to arrive and sign in between 8:30 8:45 a.m. each day. Lunch will not be provided for the fall series, but time will be allotted for participants to leave the site for a 45 minute lunch break.
