Introduction This plan should be read in conjunction with Firbank s Anaphylaxis Management Policy. It is an expectation that parents will advise the School at the time of enrolment (or later) when a student is diagnosed by a medical practitioner as being at risk of anaphylaxis and provide the School with an ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis as soon as possible after diagnosis or on an annual basis. When the School receives the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis, an Anaphylaxis Communication Plan will be developed with the Head of Campus or their delegate. Communication Plans may vary from student to student depending on their individual circumstances. If appropriate, the communication plan may include various methods of communication to other school families in the class of the anaphylactic student eg. Class Blog, Class Letter. Firbank s Anaphylaxis Management Policy and Anaphylaxis Class Letter are available on the School s website and intranet. Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plans When the School is provided with a student s ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis, the Head of Campus or their delegate will complete the Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan based on the information provided in the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis. The student s individual management plan will be reviewed in consultation with the student s parents/ carers annually and as applicable if the student s condition changes and immediately after a student has had an anaphylactic reaction at School. ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis A copy of each student s Action Plan will be displayed in the Staffroom (ELC s), in the First Aid Room at Reception (Junior Schools), Reception (Senior School) and in the Midhurst Staff Centre for the Senior School. Action Plans are also made available in classrooms (Junior School), to the Head of Year (Senior School), in the Boarding House Kitchen, in the Head of Boarding s Office and the Health Centre. Actions plans should be reviewed annually or after an incident. Photos on the Action Plans must be updated annually. Staff Training All staff will be briefed once a semester by a staff member who has up to date anaphylaxis management training. The briefing will include information regarding the School s policy, will identify those students diagnosed with a medical condition that is related to allergy and potential anaphylactic reaction, where their medication is located, how to use an autoinjector and the School s first aid and emergency response procedure. Teachers and other School staff who conduct classes which students at risk of anaphylaxis attend, or give instruction to students at risk of anaphylaxis must have up to date training in an anaphylaxis training course (22099VIC or 10313NAT). This training must provide accreditation for three years. Location of Autoinjectors Page 1

Junior School - If a student has been prescribed an autoinjector, it must be provided by the student s parents/carers to the School. The student s own autoinjector should be stored in the classroom in a clear plastic container, with the student s photo on the front, with their Action Plan. Senior School - If students have been prescribed an autoinjector, they are responsible for taking it to class and carrying with them at all times during breaks. Responding to an Incident Emergency Response Procedure 1. Lay person flat. Do not allow them to stand or walk. If breathing is difficult allow them to sit. 2. Give EpiPen or Anapen 3. Staff member to phone the ambulance 000 4. Phone family/emergency contact 5. Further adrenaline dose may be given if no response after 5 minutes (if another adrenaline autoinjector is available) Classrooms Where possible only School staff with training in the administration of an autoinjector should administer the student s EpiPen or Anapen. However, it is imperative that an autoinjector is administered as soon as possible after an anaphylactic reaction. Therefore, if necessary, the autoinjector can be administered by anyone using the ASCIA Action Plan. A member of staff should remain with the student displaying symptoms whilst another staff member or student locates the EpiPen or Anapen and the student s ASCIA Action Plan. Yard Duty Yard duty satchels or bum bags are carried by all staff with photos and Action Plans for those students at risk of anaphylaxis. Staff should not leave a student who is experiencing an anaphylactic reaction. Junior Schools are to use a card system to alert Reception who will bring the EpiPen or Anapen. Senior School will ask a reliable student to bring the EpiPen or Anapen and alert the Health Centre Manager and/or Reception. Relief Staff and Volunteers Relief staff will be briefed by the Head of Campus or their delegate, if they have at risk students in their care. Relief staff are to familiarise themselves with the individual s management plan. Relief teacher induction folders contain at risk students photo and plans for their campus. Volunteers are under the supervision of the class teacher and are to follow any instructions provided by the teacher or other member of staff. Sporting Events Senior School A permission form requiring updated medical details for the student is required at the commencement of the Girls Sport Victoria (GSV) sport season. The Head Coach will be informed of any student at risk of anaphylaxis prior to departure to the event and will have access to their Action Plan on CareMonkey. A general use autoinjector will be included in the First Aid kit whenever a student at risk of anaphylaxis is representing Firbank in GSV sport. In the event of an anaphylactic Page 2

reaction away from school, the supervising teacher or coach is to immediately implement the ASCIA Action Plan, call an ambulance and notify the Head of Campus immediately. Junior School Students attending off- site sporting events are required to complete a permission form requiring updated medical details prior to departure. The Teacher in Charge will ensure the student at risk of anaphylaxis, brings their own EpiPen or Anapen and will have access to the student s Action Plan on CareMonkey. A First Aid kit with a general use autoinjector must be taken to all off- site sporting events. Camps, Excursions and Overseas Travel All students must submit completed medical forms prior to the camp, excursion or overseas travel. The student s autoinjector, ASCIA Action Plan and a mobile phone must be taken on all camps, excursions and overseas travel. The teacher in charge of the camp, excursion or overseas travel is responsible for assigning a designated staff member who will ensure the student s autoinjector, action plan and general use autoinjector are correctly stored and available. Remote settings should also be assessed in terms of access to medical facilities, local emergency services and mobile phone coverage. A satellite phone will be made available if required. Relevant third parties will be advised of any student at risk of anaphylaxis. Post Incident Following responding to an anaphylactic reaction, staff are expected to engage in the following: Communicate immediately with the Head of Campus who will notify the parents or carers Complete a Student Accident Report Form Debrief with students and staff involved Collect the student s belongings if transported by ambulance Head of Campus or their delegate is to discuss (later) with the parents or carer the incident and to review the Individual Management Plan and ASCIA Action Plan Head of Campus to implement risk prevention strategies where appropriate Offer post incident counselling to those involved in the incident Review the adequacy of the response of the school and consider additional training and other corrective actions Page 3

Sample Letter to the Class Dear Parents, We are asking your help to support the children in our school who are at risk of anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that is potentially life threatening. Food allergies are the most common cause of anaphylaxis. There is no cure for food allergy, therefore avoidance of known food allergens is crucial. Peanuts and tree nuts are the foods most likely to cause anaphylaxis. Firbank is supporting children at risk of anaphylaxis by: training staff, encouraging children to wash their hands after eating, educating children about food allergies, and choosing not to sell food in the school canteen which contains nuts We ask you to support children at risk of anaphylaxis by: not sending food which has peanuts or tree nuts (eg hazelnuts, cashews, almonds etc) in the main ingredients list. Note: products containing traces of peanuts or tree nuts can be sent to school. teaching your child not to share food with friends that have food allergy, encouraging your child to wash their hands after eating, asking your child to get help immediately if their allergic schoolmate gets sick, and explaining to your child that teasing a child with an allergy or tampering with their medication, is bullying and could be life- threatening. With your help we can provide a safe environment that meets the needs of all our children. Yours sincerely Head of Campus Page 5
