SABA CHICAGO FOUNDATION LAW STUDENT PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOWSHIP 2017 APPLICATION Fellowship Application Deadline: April 9, 2017 APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS Thank you for your interest in the South-Asian Bar Association of Chicago Foundation (the SABA Chicago Foundation ) Law Student Public Interest Fellowship! The SABA Chicago Foundation Fellowship provides a $5,000 grant to one law school student who works in an unpaid or low-paid summer position benefiting the public interest. Work benefiting the South-Asian community is preferable but not required. All applicants for the 2017 SABA Chicago Foundation Law Student Public Interest Fellowship ( Fellowship ) must complete this application and sign the Applicant s Certification at the end of this form. Additionally, to promote the grant recipient's exposure to public interest law, the selected applicant must commit to volunteering for a minimum of 6 hours between June to December of 2017 in support of SABA Chicago Foundation's pro bono activities, including the Cyriac Kappil Clinic, as the SABA Chicago Foundation Summer Intern. If the applicant has not yet received and accepted an offer of employment for the summer, the applicant should list all possible, paid or unpaid, public interest or otherwise, positions he/she is considering. Applicants are encouraged to attach additional pages if necessary to explain any answer(s). Finalists will be asked to participate in a brief personal interview as a condition of further consideration. All applications must be submitted to the SABA Chicago Foundation by midnight on Sunday, April 9, 2017. The recipient of the fellowship will be announced by Saturday, May 20, 2017. APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY To be eligible for the SABA Chicago Foundation Fellowship, the applicant must be a current first-year or second-year law student and must work in a public interest position in a legal capacity during the summer of 2017. The applicant may receive up to, but no more than, $10,000 in summer earnings, including the SABA Chicago Foundation Fellowship grant, to remain eligible for funding. The SABA Chicago Foundation may seek to verify the total funds received by recipient. A violation of this condition will require the applicant to return the full Fellowship grant amount to the SABA Chicago Foundation. Recipients must provide written confirmation of their summer employment with a public interest organization and the anticipated total amount of summer earnings before the grant will be paid to them. SABA Chicago Foundation defines public interest positions as jobs that provide services to underrepresented persons or interests, to the government (including judicial internships), or to non-profit entities serving community interests. What are the job eligibility criteria for the SABA Chicago Foundation Fellowship? To be eligible for consideration for the SABA Chicago Foundation Fellowship, a candidate must obtain a summer position that is: With a non-profit organization or a government agency (including judicial internships); Consistent with the SABA Chicago Foundation s Fellowship definition of public interest; and One in which the student will work a minimum of 8 weeks and a total of at least 320 hours during the summer. Are there any jobs that do not qualify for SABA Chicago Foundation funding? Yes. Regardless of whether a job meets the above criteria, the SABA Chicago Foundation Fellowship will not fund: Work for any politician, political party, or other entity in association with an election for public office; Work for which the political support or other affiliation of the student is a prerequisite for employment consideration; or Work for a for-profit law firm or corporate entity. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Upon the conclusion of their summer employment, Fellowship recipients must submit a 1000 word typed evaluation/summary of their experience in their SABA Chicago Foundation funded position by Saturday, October 7, 2017. Fellowship applicants must also submit a statement committing to volunteer at least 6 hours total from June to December of 2017 in support of SABA Chicago Foundation s pro bono legal activities as the SABA Chicago Foundation Summer Intern. Exceptions to this requirement will be considered on a caseby case basis and will take into account factors such as conflicting policies of the intern s chosen employer. Note: The Fellowship Judges will evaluate your application based on the Public Interests jobs you describe herein. If I do not comply with this requirement, I agree to refund my entire SABA Chicago Foundation Fellowship grant unless specifically authorized otherwise by the SABA Chicago Foundation Board on the basis of compelling extenuating circumstances.
