Careers in Healthcare The healthcare industry is booming everywhere, and Northwest Indiana is no exception. In-Demand Career Path in Healthcare Occupation Average Salary Description Education/Training Nursing Assistants / $21,923 Provide basic patient care under direction of nursing staff. Perform duties such as feed, bathe, dress, groom, or move patients.. Postsecondary certification Over the last ten years1, in the healthcare industry there has been nearly 20 percent growth in employment and it shows no sign of slowing down. Certain healthcare occupations, such as Registered Nurses, Physicians, and Medical Assistants, have always been and will continue to remain in-demand, but new occupations are sprouting up and more are likely on the horizon due to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. In order to remain compliant with the guidelines set forth in the Affordable Care Act, hospitals are hiring for positions that specialize in certain functions and training current positions to take on a modified role. For example, hospitals need personnel to enter patient files into an electronic records database, and this is often delegated to Medical Coders. A new position, the Community Healthcare Associate (CHA), meets with patients when they are admitted to a hospital to explain insurance, new healthcare laws, and answer any questions; after the patient leaves, the CHA follows up to ensure quality care was received. Because of the high growth of the healthcare industry in Northwest Indiana and the high demand for skilled healthcare workers, the earnings are sustainable at $48,470. This industry also pays better than the regional average earnings of $46,200. If you re looking to get into the healthcare industry, remember more education is always better than less. One of the main points in the Affordable Care Act is a call for more education across all levels of diagnostic positions. Two of the most popular healthcare occupations in this role, Registered Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurse, will require a bachelor s degree and master s degree (respectively) in the near future. However, not every healthcare career will require four or more years of schooling to enter entry-level, support positions (e.g., Certified Nursing Assistant and Medical Assistant) will remain largely the same, requiring only a postsecondary certification. Contact your local WorkOne office (see listing on back of this publication) and find out if you qualify for education and training dollars. Entry Level Mid Level Experienced Medical Assistants / $28,329 Registered Nurses / $61,276 Dental Hygienists / $66,685 Family and General Practitioners / $167,460 Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician. Assess patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records. Administer nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent, or disabled patients. May advise patients on health maintenance and disease prevention or provide case management. Clean teeth and examine oral area, head, and neck for signs of oral disease. May educate patients on oral hygiene, take and develop x-rays, or apply fluoride or sealants. Physicians who diagnose, treat, and help prevent disease and injuries that commonly occur in the general population. May refer patients to specialists when needed for further diagnosis or treatment. Postsecondary certification and on-the-job training Associate degree Associate degree First professional degree (Medical) WorkOne CareerConnect. October/November 2013 page 5

Helping those with disabilities move toward financial indepedence What is the Ticket to Work? Social Security s Ticket to Work program supports career development for people with disabilities who want to work. Social Security disability beneficiaries age 18 through 64 qualify. The Ticket to Work Program is free and voluntary. Ticket to Work helps people with disabilities progress toward financial independence. The Ticket Program is a good fit for people who want to improve their earning potential and who are committed to preparing for longterm success in the workforce. Ticket to Work offers beneficiaries with disabilities access to meaningful employment with the assistance of Ticket to Work employment service providers. If you are ready to go to work, there are people ready and waiting to help you! The career development services and support you need are unique to you. The Ticket program can connect you with the right mix of free employment support services and approved service providers that will best fit your needs. The Ticket program and Work Incentives allow you to keep your benefits while you explore employment, receive vocational rehabilitation and gain work experience. Your cash benefits and Medicaid or Medicare often continue throughout your transition to work, and there are protections in place to help you return to benefits if you find you are unable to continue working due to your disability. Why Ticket to Work? If you receive disability benefits from Social Security, then you know that getting those benefits took time, energy, and patience. In determining your eligibility for disability benefits, Social Security found that you could not earn enough money to support yourself. With the right opportunities and supports however, many people can earn a higher standard of living by going to work and leaving the benefit rolls. Earning a living through employment is not something everyone can do but it may be right for you. Many find that the rewards far outweigh the risks. Take the time to learn about the employment services and support Social Security offers to beneficiaries with disabilities through the Ticket to Work Program you may be surprised! We are here to help you learn more and start on your journey to financial independence. (Source: http://choosework.net/ about/how-it-works/) Still need further clarification on how you might benefit?
