History of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the "Jewels" of the Fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy. The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. History of the Theta Zeta Lambda Chapter The Theta Zeta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is seated in Ann Arbor, Michigan and is home to brothers residing in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and various cities within the Metro-Detroit area. The chapter was founded on January 23, 1962. The seven men, who established the Theta Zeta Lambda Chapter were Rev. Lyman S. Parks, John L. Ragland, John Mansfield, Dr. Thomas Bass, Rollins P. Greene, Booker Brooks, and Dr. Henry C. Bryant. The proud African American men rejected the discriminatory practices of the time and encouraged everyone to join in the fight for immediate civil rights. They encountered unfair resistance, just as Jackie Robinson had a decade before. Nevertheless, they persevered and with the assistance of others in the activist community, old restrictions against full employment and open housing for African Americans slowly began to fade throughout the Ann Arbor area. Theta Zeta Lambda Chapter continues to play a leading role in this community by providing tutoring, recognition for significant achievements as well as scholarships for our youth; by providing food for the truly disadvantage; and by providing voting assistance wherever it is needed. Student Recognition Scholarship Annually the Theta Zeta Lambda chapter awards four $500.00 scholarships to graduating African-American male high school seniors who will be attending college in the following fall semester. The scholarship is nonrenewable. The scholarship award has been given to many deserving students throughout the area. The Theta Zeta Lambda Scholarship fund is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. Tax ID: 38-2671230.
