INSIDE PADUA SPORT Term 1, 2018 True Success For many, success in sports and in life is winning. It is considered to be the ultimate goal. In sport it is winning a match, a premiership, or a championship. Not according to John Wooden, one of the most successful and respected College basketball coaches in history. He says; Success is a peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable. The keys to Wooden s success in motivation and inspiring young players are the same principles that makes one s life a success. His players remarked that they don t recall Wooden ever stressing the importance of winning. For him, it was sticking to fundamentals. The focus was on the process of having them become the best team they can be. At the heart of his coaching were the principles of excellent physical condition, skill, team spirit, with preparation being the outcome. Coach Wooden also emphasised that true success lies in personal responsibility, integrity, and hard work. He stressed that being prepared and being the best that you could was the ultimate goal. It is no coincidence that winning happened to be the by product. In 2018 I hope the Sports Program at Padua mirrors many of John Woodens coaching fundamentals and processes. Sport teaches the boys the importance of hard work, team spirit and resilience. Although we all enjoy the feeling of winning, it should not preoccupy our thoughts and words. Rather we instil an attitude of being the best you can. Nearly 100 swimmers, 33 Cricket Teams, 23 Volleyball teams and 4 AFL teams all did their best on the weekend. Many teams were fortunate enough to experience the thrill of winning while others took gratitude from the sheer enjoyment of competition. Special mention to the 1 st XI Cricket and 1 st VI Volleyball on posting their first victory of the season. We also had so many awesome individual performances. Well done to every Paduan Sportsman. Many thanks to the Coordinators, Coaches, Managers and Supporters. This week we take on Iona College (AIC Round 3) while the Yr. 5 and 6 AFL teams take on Villanova College. The House Swimming Carnival is also on this week at Centenary Pool (Thurs Yr. 5-8); (Fri Yr. 9-12). All parents are welcome at attend.
