Miller (Fretts) Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarship assistance for vocational and higher educational opportunities for Scottdale Borough/East Huntingdon Twp. youth. The fund was endowed by Daniel R. (Bob) Miller s daughter Karen to honor the memory of her father and the Miller & Fretts families of the Scottdale Area. Bob Miller, for whom this scholarship is named, was born and raised in Scottdale. He believed that the core values instilled in him by his immediate Miller and Fretts relatives in the Scottdale area were a contributing factor to his later successful business career and other lifetime experiences. Growing up in Scottdale, before his family moved to Washington, D.C., Bob acquired an abiding interest in designing and crafting specialty items from wood and from metal that would become his lifetime calling. At the outbreak of World War II, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in the South Pacific. In the Navy, he, became a deep sea diver and excelled as a metalsmith. Following the war, Bob continued his work as a metalsmith, which lead to his establishing D & M Metal Specialties, Inc. For many years "D & M" would make significant contributions to major construction projects in Washington, D.C. and the metropolitan areas. Bob retired to Frederick Co., MD where he continued to enjoy his lifelong work as well as a bit of farming. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from Southmoreland School District, attending Central Westmoreland CTC; preference will be given to students who reside in Scottdale Borough or East Huntingdon Twp. The following criteria will apply: 1. Applications are encouraged from students who wish to pursue a career in a vocational trade or traditional education. 2. Demonstrate financial need. 3. Use scholarship at: technical school, community college or university. 4. Complete an application. 5. Include a copy of your most recent transcript including SAT scores. 6. Write and submit an essay: (Up to 500 words) What are the factors or influences that have led you to follow your chosen career/educational path. Also, provide any information about your family s history/ties to Scottdale Borough/East Huntingdon Twp/Southmoreland area. The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County shall notify the chosen scholarship recipient of its decision. The scholarship payment will be made once the selected student provides confirmation to the Foundation of enrollment in the school he or she will be attending.
