In the News Highlights TRENDS/PROJECTIONS Jul 2017 Inside Higher Ed Is Online Education a Jobs Engine? According to the chief economic strategist at the Progressive Policy Institute, the e-commerce industry created 397,000 jobs in the United States between 2007 and 2017, many of which were in warehousing. However, these findings are not conclusive, as it is difficult to assign job creation directly to the growth of e-commerce, as it is not always clear what tasks employees of Amazon or Google or other tech companies are assigned. Nor is it certain that warehouse job creation will not plateau, as productivity around online shipping grows as the sector grows, and as warehouses themselves become more automated. Jun 2017 The Brookings Institution Will robots make job training (and workers) obsolete? Workforce development in an automating labor market Author finds that an old middle consisting of production and clerical jobs for workers with high school or less education is being at least partially replaced by a new middle set of jobs in health care, advanced manufacturing, information technology, /logistics and many services that pay reasonably well but require some postsecondary education. Instead of a surplus of workers, employers in these sectors actually have some difficulty filling existing middle-wage jobs, which runs counter to what we would expect if robots were quickly and easily replacing workers in them. Mar 2017 Ottawa Business Journal What the 2017 federal budget means for Ottawa Hyped as the so-called innovation budget, the Liberals spending plan includes a pledge to spend $950 million, which includes $800 million announced in last year s budget, on economic clusters focused on advanced manufacturing, agri-food, clean technology, digital technology, health/bio-sciences and clean resources, as well as infrastructure and. Sep 2016 CBC News Are robots coming for our jobs? Highlights a new Forrester research report that predicts that in just five years, robots will steal six per cent of U.S. jobs, forecasting that "a disruptive tidal wave will begin" by 2021. It predicts the biggest impact will occur in, logistics, customer service and consumer services. Local Employment Planning Council 2016 SECTOR SPOTLIGHT (Published August 2017) 14
