Fve EKU colleges, for nstance, are offerng a total of about 70 courses durng a sprng ntersesson May 15-June t. A two-and-a-half week ntersesson wll follow the summer school whch ends August. These, plus summer workshops, nsttutes, and semnars offered by the varous colleges are remnders that fguratvely EKU dormtory doors and academc portals reman open throughout the year. The campus does not present durng the summer an array of deserted buldngs and other facltes. Ths concepton of yeararound educaton was born as Kentucky became leu agrcultural and young men no longer demanded to be released from ther books durng the growng and harvestng Such events as Blue Grass Boys' State, a mock state and local government sesson sponsored by the Amercan Legon for hgh school junors and senors, help keep the summer campus actve. Ths year's Boys' State s set for June 3-9. A Cheerleader Clnc for hgh school cheerers s set for June 18-23 and 25-30. The Stephen Collns Foster Musc Camp for hgh school muscans wll be held June 18- July 25, featurng several outdoor publc concerts each week. A four-week tranng camp for hgh school Marchng bands s also held each summer. A Bookmen's Exhbt s set for June 20-21 and a Drll Team Workshop for July 23-27. Pandt. Ambassador Charles "Chp" Bohlen. and Jesse Stuart. Admsson s free to these lectures and the publc s nvted. The Fne Arts and Lecture Seres, along wth pop concerts that feature entertaners lke the Carpenters, Doc Severnson. and Smokey Robnson, s presented by the EKU Unversty Center Board, composed of students, faculty, and admnstratve members. The Board's programs are fnanced by student fees, pad durng regstraton, whch generally pay for the students' admsson. Many programs are free. The publc s admtted to all these programs, but students and faculty are admtted frst n case of an overflow audence. Other noted personaltes and programs presented by the Center Beard are Julan Bond, Ralph Nader, the Don Cossack Chorus and Dancers, the Preservaton Hall Jars Band, Amahl and the Nght Vstor, the Gaslght Theatre presentng the World of Rod McKuen. and John Chappeu n "Mark Twan Tonght." Party platforms were outlned well n advance of electon week, wth each canddate speakng out on what he beleved should be accomplshed n the comng year. Due to the fact that Kelhoffer won the race for Student Assocaton presdent, there wll have to be a separate Chuck Kelhoffer electon some tme n the future for Student Regent. f a natve Kentuckan becomes presdent, he automatcally assumes the role of Regent, but, as n the case of Kelhoffer, a specal electon s held when the new Student Government presdent s not from Kentucky. Judge Stevens contacted area hgh schools and health organzatons to help n donatng ther tme to buldng the "Operaton Venus" program. The teenagers attended specal tranng sessons sponsored by the Fayette County Health Department where they studed specfc aspects of venereal dsease. Physcans and health offcals prepared the recruts for By tfu Presdent of the Unted States of Amerca A Proclamaton For the Naton and for the world, there are few ssues of greater moment than the qualty of our envronment As cvlzatons have evolved, man has ncreasngly altered hs world to accommodate hs needs. Today, our mmense technologcal expanson affects the earth more than»t any earler tme. Feffer The ar, water, and natural resources of the earth are not nexhaustble, yet we contnue to make major and often contradctory demands on these resources. f man s to preserve the natural hertage upon whch hs survval and the qualty of hs lfe depend, he must make resolute choces and fx uncompromsng prortes., The envronmental awakenng of recent years marks a new maturty n our atttudes toward the relatonshp of man to hs surroundngs. We have made a begnnng, but t s only a begnnng. Every Amercan and ndeed, every ctzen of the world must endeavor by earnest and sustaned effort to nurture ths earth whch we all share. NOW, THEREFORE,, RCHARD NXON, Presdent of the Unted States of Amerca, do hereby desgnate the perod of Aprl 17 through Aprl 23,1972, as Earth Week. call upon approprate offcals of the Federal Government and of State and local governments to encourage an understandng of the purposes of Earth Week, to observe the week through approprate ceremones, and to gve specal attenton to the educatng of our ctzens n the preservaton and enrchment of our natural envronment. As a result, Operaton Venus grew n number of volunteers and grew n dversty of resources for the program. The hot-lne was mantaned, but there was an addton of new commttees concerned wth publc awareness and publc educaton that were put nto operaton. The commttees delt wth publc relatons and advertsng. They also gave presentatons to groups for the purpose of educatng them about VD. Wnner Makes Loudest Nose? s Ths year's Student Assocaton electon has had everythng from rado advertsements supportng the canddates to csmpag" cards and posters. Durng the last week of the race, however, the electon seemed to have become a battle of the bands, wth the canddates playng the "anythng you can do, can do better" game. Each of the canddates for the offce of presdent sponsored a band concert n the ravne on dfferent days. Apparently the thought behnd ths s the better the band.the more people t attracts. And the more people t attracts, the better chance the canddate has of gettng votes for hs tcket. The queston, however, s not whch band s the best. Why waste the effort needed for an mportant offce such as Student Assocaton presdent tryng to outdo the other canddates' bands. But then, there are some students who would vote for s canddate merely because he had a better band than hs opponents. Why should canddates have to resort to usng bands to lure people out to vote. Shouldn't Student Assocaton presdental canddates be judged on ther merts and qualfcatons rather than on the qualty of ther band/ Campagnng Or Battle Of The Bands??????? UHte On! Carl Nelsen, who ded at the age of 66 n 1931, s one of the more controversal composers of ths century, and hs opera "Saul and Davd" was a complete departure from the tradtonal operatc concept, where the story and musc shared equal mportance Nelsen stressed the musc n ths, hs frst opera, the story seemng to support the musc-a devaton from the popular operas of Verd and Wagner. Nelsen completed the opera n 1901 and t was frst performed by the Royal Opera n Copenhagen n 1902. Enar Chrstansen was the Lbrettst. The opera n four acts wth an Englsh translaton by Geoffrey Dunn tells the story of Saul and Dad, as wrtten n the Old Testatment, the frst and second books of Samuel. The UK students should be commended for ther concern and tme devoted to Operaton Venus. They are provng that college students are not lmted to the college tself but are able and wllng to work wth the communty for mprovement. n Madson County such a program would be a great asset. Wth the lmted amount of physcans and medcal offcals t would dffcult to have such a program. However, Eastern students could solve ths problem. All t takes s enough people who are wllng to devote some of ther free tme to educatng and counselng ctzens about venereal dsease. Whether or not a program such as Operaton Venus wll materalze at Eastern depends on the students and the communty. However, a program such as ths could only better the communty and the campus-communty relatons. Talk to the Marne Corps Offcer Selecton Team Monday "Thursday 2M-27 Aprl at the Jones Buldng- Remember when a ynng man could get ahead n busness smplv by growng old? t was a good system for those wth a lttle talent and a lot of patence, but today's technology moves too fast to wat for senorty. At Kodak, our extensve nvolvement n basc research has made the need for fresh, young thnkng more pressng than ever. So we hre the best new talent we possbly can. Then we do both of us s favor by turnng them loose on real problems, and gvng them the freedom and responsblty they need to solve them. That's how three Kodak scentsts n ther early thrtes just made a breakthrough n lqud lasers, developng an organc dye laser wth a contnuous beam. Ther dscovery means more than just a new knd of laser. t means a whole range of new laser applcatons, n felds from medcne to communcatons. t was the knd of dscovery most men work a lfetme for. Yet these young men stll have most of ther lfetmes ahead of them. Why do we gve young men so much freedom and responsblty? Because t's good busness, and we're n busness to make a proft. But n furtherng our own busness nterests, we also further socety's nterests. And that's good. After all, our busness depends on socety. So we care what happens to t. More than a busness. t

Page f-thuraday, Aprl 20, 1972-THE EASTERN PROGRESS BY JM KURK Progress Sports Edtor Kdd Blames Poor Weather Colonel Grdders Need Work On Offense Ran Hampers Sprng Sports As usual, the Eastern sprng sports teams ths year have had trouble gettng ther scheduled games and meets to fall on the days when t doesn't ran. The baseball team was washed out of nne straght games durng the deluges of the past couple of weeks, ncludng four home games, and they'll try to make up two of them today and tomorrow. The golf team was raned out of ts scheduled acton here last weekend, and the tenns squad wasn't able to get n ts three matches, ncludng a scheduled trp to Murray last Frday. One of the teams, though, the track squad, managed to have ts Tuesday meet wth Cumberland fall on a good day, and the Colonel thnles made the most of t by stayng unbeaten wth an 87-58 vctory. And the baseballers fnally got n a game last Monday, whppng Cncnnat to mprove ther record to a fne 2f>8 (ths ncludes the perfect 7-0 slate of the fall season). A banquet honorng the 1971-72 Eastern Eel swmmng team wll be held tonght at 6:90 p.m. n the Powell Buldng. Coach Donald Combs' Eels won the Kentucky ntercollegate Swmmng Champonshp for the tenth year n a row ths past season. A week or so ago someone wrote a letter to Dean Eagle's column n the Lousvlle Courer-Journal about the qualty of OVC basketball whch nght nterest a lot of fans of OVC teams. Ths fan wrote to Eagle that, " am not ashamed or afrad to say that Eastern should be ranked n the top 10 n the (Contnued on Page Eght) "Ragged and nconsstent" best descrbed Eastern's frst scrmmage of sprng practce Tuesday, accordng to head football coach Roy Kdd. "You could tell by our tmng and technque we had not been practcng as long as we would have lked for ths pont of sprng drlls, " Kdd sad. "n fact, snce our frst practce March 31, we have not had more than two consecutve days outsde ths sprng." Offensvely, the Colonels' No. 1 and 2 unts "made too many mstakes". The offense suffered three fumbles and one pass ntercepton and was called for llegal procedure two tmes. "You just can't afford to make that many mstakes," Kdd noted. On defense where Eastern DATE Sept. 9 Sept. 16 Sept. 33 Sept. 30 Oct. 7 Oct. 1 Oct. 21 Oct. 28 Nov. Nov. 11 Nov. 18 1972 EASTERN returns most of ts lnebacker corps, the Colonels fared a lttle better. "Defensvely, we looked about average," Kdd sad. "However, we stll need to work on technque and gettng more people on the ball carrer." The loss of 17 lettennen took ts toll on the EKU football team wth most of these players ether starters or key reserves last season. "We're young and we've got a long way to go but the kds are workng real hard for as ltue practce outsde as we've been able to get n," Kdd sad. The Aprl 17 sprng game has been canceled because "we're not two deep on defense". n ts place, a scrmmage between the offense and defense has been tentatvely set for May 3. a. Money Matters Plague Dr. Martn T ROBERT A. BABBAGE SUffWrUr The natonwde prce freere has begun to thaw aa far as Dr. Robert R. Martn can tell, and Eastarn s feelng a slght money pnch aa a result. Plagued frst wth utlty rat* hkes, and then by student t uttoo mrcasra for the conng beonlum, the Eastern presdent s a bt perturbed by the stuaton. Hs only recourse, t seems, s makng sure all the blls get pad. "He telephone rate ncrease s one of the bggest problems we have," Dr. Martn sad n a press conference wth Journalsm students. Phone-. Charges Up South Central Bell had charged W.50 per phone each tme the unts were turned on, but now wants $18.75 for the same servce. For the Unversty, t means an addtonal expenae of $25,000 annually, accordng to Dr. Martn. Many KentuckJans wll face ths same problem when phones are connected n the future-not to menton general usage and long dstance rate ncreases. To students havng a phone n ther dorm room, ther $,50 per semester rate wll be upped to M.M. The new rates went nto effect on March 20 despte the protest of state Attorney General Edward Hancock, who mantaned they were excessve and unnecessary. Then there's another servcerelated problem: where to put Eastern's garbage? - Eastern has been payng $35,000 each year to have refuse hauled away. Presently, the new landfll ste negotated by the cty (wthout Eastern's knowledge) s twce as far from campua-aome 19 mles further away. Fee For Use A $7,00 annual fee for use of the new landfll ncreases even more the "coot of lvng" for the school-wth all the more regret for Eastau admnstrators. However, telephones and garbage are only part of t. The Kentucky General Assembly leved a severance tax on coal of four-and-one-half cents per ton durng the wnter sesson. t s wdely speculated that consumers wll bear the burden of the tax n the form of slghtly hgher charges for coal-the mneral beng a vtal commodty to Eastern. The Assembly also rased the gasolne tax two cents per gallon effectve July 1. The Unversty has no way around facng ths expense-nor do any other Central KentucUans. To top thngs off, Kentucky Utltes Company s talkng off an electrc power rate hke that could come at a consderable coat to Eastern. Perhaps Dr. Martn's bggest regret s the tuton rate ncrease, courtesy of the General Assembly, that students attendng Kentucky's state colleges and unverstes wll face ths fall, and agan n the fall of 1973. For n-state students, the ncrease amounts to $90 per semester, or $130 over the next two years. Out-of-etate students face an addtonal $37.50 n tuton per semester, makng $150 for the two yean. Summer school students wll pay $15 more n tuton, and even the prce of ntersesson wll go up. Martn Opposes Hke Dr. Martn strongly opposed the tuton hke, and has opposed smlar tuton ncreases passed on to students snce be became presdent of Eastern some 13 years ago. The extra cost of tuton hurts mddle class students the most, Dr. Martn explaned. Many students on fnancal ad have the ncrease taken care of n ther scholarshp. Wealthy students can take care of the ncrease themselves. Workmen prepare to replace Presdent Robert R. Martn's backyard brdhouse after they took t down to ready t for sprng Sprng Cleanng Photo by DonaM Walltoum by cleanng t out. The house hangs n Dr. Martn's flower garden. Monday Through Sunday Festval Of Black Arts n Progress Eastern's thrd annual Festval of Black Arts s now n full swng. t began Monday and wll contnue through Sunday. Monday nght, workshops enttled "Whte Through a Black perspectve and the Amercan Poltcal System-the Black Man's Place n t" were held n the Jaggers Room. Tuesday nght, the Unversty Ensemble appeared n concert n the ravne. Last nght, former Lexngton Cty Commssoner, Harry Sykes, conducted a workshop n the Jaggers Room, followed by a performance of the Reader's Theatre. An art exhbt wth contrbutons by black students from Eastern, Western and Berea s now on dsplay n the Powell Buldng, and wll be there through Frday. Tonght, there wll be a concert by Young-Holt Unlmted, a Jaxx tro at 9:00 p.m. n Brock. The admsson s 93 for students n advance and 93 for everyone at the door. Upcomng actvtes nclude a performance of the Afro-Set nternatonal from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday n Brock, followed by a talent show (anyone nterested should contact Evelyn Cole-3517) and a mxer n Martn Cafetera from 9:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m. Tckets are on sale n the Powell Buldng. Sunday there wll be a gospel program n Edwards Audtorum, Model Lab School presented by the Berea Chor and the Kentucky Harmonzera.
