Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing & Health Sciences October Edition 2015 BSNA Newsletter Volunteer Opportunities Blood Drive Beth-El College of Nursing & Health Sciences is excited to announce our FIRST EVER Blood Drive!!! on Thursday, October 8th starting at 10 am. The blood drive will take place in UHAL room 115/ registration in the lobby where the couches are. We are hoping to fill 40 donations slot times, which is enough blood to save and enhance the lives of up to 120 local patients!!! ALL blood types are needed! Appointments will be made first-come, first-serve, so sign-up early! Here is how you can sign up to donate blood: - Call (800) 365-0006 opt. 2 - donors.bonfils.org -- Site Code A908 ((enter the site code only, then click go and you will find our event)) For general information about blood donor eligibility or to contact Bonfils Donor Relations department with questions about blood donation, please call 800/365-0006, ext. 1. If you sign up to donate before October 5th AND you show up for your scheduled appointment, then you will receive a FREE Bonfils tumbler cup & straw.

Trek the Tail Join us for the 2nd annual Trek the Trail 5k Run to benefit Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences scholarships. This is the only trail run at UCCS and raises funds for nursing and health science students to further their education and become successful health professionals. The event is being co-hosted by Beth-El's outstanding college student organizations: Exercise is Medicine, Beth-El Student Nurses Association, Nutrition Club and Local Food Club. September 24th is the last day to register at $25. Price increases to $30, September 25 - October 3. Please use this link to register online: https://www.regonline.com/builder/site/default.aspx?eventid=1762226 In 2014, over 75 participants, their families, and volunteers came out to support Trek the Trail and raised over $3000 for future nursing and health science students! Packet Pick-Up and race day registration will open at 7:30 a.m. in Lot 580 on October 3rd. The course is on the west side of the bluff just east of North Nevada and just south of Pulpit Rock on UCCS campus trails. Lot 580 at the intersection of N. Nevada and North Campus Heights. Marion House On Friday November 20th and Wednesday December 2, BSNA has set up a volunteer opportunity at Marion House Soup Kitchen. There will be two sifts for both days, 7:00-10:00 a.m. (3 spots available) and 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. (five spots available). Kick off the school year right by joining the National Student Nurses Association! What is NSNA? NSNA is a national organization that seeks to provide educational resources and professional development opportunities to student nurses. Anyone enrolled in a nursing program can join! What are the benefits of being an NSNA member? NSNA members get special discounts on scrubs, shoes, NCLEX materials, hotels, access to educational resources and portfolio services, discounts on conferences, and much more! CALLING ALL NURSING STUDENTS! BSNA is hosting a NSNA membership drive on Monday October 12th from 12:00-1:00 in the atrium by food services. Rachel will have forms for everyone to join that day, and for anyone who joins you will be entered in a drawing for a FREE MDF CARDIAC STETHESCOPE. Cost to join NSNA is $35 a year. If you join, you get a membership card which gives you a discount to Office Depot. There are also many scholarships and if you are planning on going to the NSNA conference the price of the conference is lowered. Please join, there are great benefits and it looks great on a resume!

Mentorship Sophomores! It is still not too late to sign up for studentstudent mentorship! If interested or want more information contact Johnny at jhawks@uccs.edu High School Visits The BSNA will be heading to Woodland Park High School on Wednesday, September 30th at 9:30 am for a "Why Nursing?" discussion. We will be meeting at UHall and carpooling to WPHS for a 10:30-11 visit. We will be returning to UCCS before 12. Similar meetings have been scheduled for the morning of October 7th at Liberty High School and October 28th at Manitou Springs. Upcoming Meetings October Meeting Attention all students, please join the BSNA board members at the October 5th BSNA meeting at 12:30 in room 141. We will be having special speakers from the Bonfils blood bank. There will be free Halloween themed snacks to enjoy. Lunch will be provided by Kaplan after the meeting for anyone signed up for the mini review. Every meeting we will also conduct a raffle and each person who attends the meeting gets a ticket in the raffle; if you are a member of NSNA (National Student Nurse Association) you get two tickets in the drawing. Please come and mingle with other Beth El students and relax those study worries away! As a side note president and vice president elections will be held on November 2. If you would like to run for either one of these positions please contact any of the current board members (emails listed below) and they will get you added to the ballot. You should also prepare a short one minute speech discussing why you would make a good candidate.

NCLEX Test Mini Reviews Kaplan FREE Mini Review Hurst FREE Mini Review On October 12th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in room 141 Hurst test prep is hosting a free mini review for the NCLEX test review program they have. For anyone who registers online a free lunch will be provided. This is a great way to be prepared for the NCLEX exam and a great way to decide if Hurst review will work for you! If you would like to register please email Christa Radka at cdamron@uccs.edu and she will send you the link. Immediately following the monthly BSNA meeting on October 5th, Kaplan is hosting a free mini review from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in room 141. Kaplan will be providing free Jimmy Johns Subs for anyone who registered online. This is a great opportunity to get a free sample of what Kaplan will offer for their NCLEX test review class.
