My Administrative officer Lt/C John Sulkowski, AP has a huge task to plan events and rendezvous that will bring back the members, but with the support of P/C Michael Babiarz, AP, P/C William Stano, and others, I am looking forward to a great year of activities. We are kicking off the New Year with a table top rendezvous at the Golden Dragon to start the Chinese New Year. I am looking forward to a good time, and we can expect many more. We have to build the social aspect of our squadron to make it fun. In our education department, our instructors devote their time and effort year in and year out. I am calling for volunteers to help them. You could start with teaching just one chapter of the ABC3 course. This could really give them a break. They also would feel that their work is being acknowledged Once again thank you, May you have following seas, Cdr Frederick Muller, SN ftmuller@live.com Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Tars and Tripe February 2016

2 Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Executive Department Lt/C Bill Stano, JN United States Power Squadrons www.gpps-d9.com February often brings us some of the snowiest and coldest days of the winter. Well, maybe not this year! It also is a month of love, romance and passion. I encourage every squadron member not to forget that very special person on 14th of February. Passion comes in a variety of forms and the one I wish to focus on is being enthusiastic about something you feel is important and wanting to share that passion with others. In this month s message, Chief Commander Baldridge talks about our love for the water and how our organization strives to make our waterways a safer place for us to enjoy our passion for boating. We come together as a squadron to teach classes, do vessel safety checks and help others enjoy the waters we share. Being a member of the Grosse Pointe Power Squadron connects us to a network of fellow boaters who wish to learn, teach and improve the environment in which we escape into and have fun. You are a part of this community. Your active participation makes this community stronger and more enjoyable. In 2016, please consider taking or teaching a class, organize or come to a rendezvous or just ask the question How can I help? Our Administrative Officer, John Sulkowski, AP is having the Rendezvous Kick off Meeting at D/ Lt/C Michael Babiarz s home on Wednesday February 3rd at 1900 hours. Please come and bring your ideas for meetings, rendezvous and ideas to promote squadron activities. On Friday, 12 February, our squadron is bringing back a favorite land rendezvous. Come join us at the Golden Dragon to Celebrate the Chinese New Year. John Metropoulos will host this event and he has arranged a great meal and something extra to celebrate the Year of the Monkey. You must RSVP to Lt Bonny Utz at 313-886-3449. ALL responses must be received by 07 February 2016. The cost is $22.00 per person. It is time for the 58th Annual Detroit Boat Show 13-21 February 2016. What to see the show for free? All you have to do is man the District 9 booth for a couple of hours. You will also earn time towards receiving a merit mark and you will be spending time with other boaters or would be boaters. I know of no better way to promote the educational and fraternal activities of the Grosse Pointe Power Squadron. Contact Lt/C John Sulkowski, AP at jsulkow1@hfhs.org or D/Lt Robert Krieg, AP at bksr@ janssenrefrigeration.com. Rose and I will be attending the USPS Annual Meeting in Orlando in February. The Annual meeting is a great time to share experiences with other USPS members, learn new ideas and renew or meet new friends. The National Bridge will be changing this year. National Executive Officer, V/C Louie Ojeda, SN will be sworn in as the new Chief Commander. New people at the helm will mean new ideas and change. Rose and I have had the opportunity to meet Louie and his wife Dorothy and both bring enthusiasm and passion to the entire USPS organization. Grosse Pointe Power Squadron SEO Report Lt/C Chet Dunbar Jr., AP 3 We started the Americas Boating Class, Monday, January 25 at Grosse Pointe North High School with knot tying. We have 4 students; one is the Stano s neighbor. The class will go on for 9 more weeks. There is still time to start this class, if you know anyone who is interested have them call to sign up. Our next class will be a shorter class starting in April. Anyone with questions regarding classes, can call our phone number 313-744-7472. Also, Time to start a Sail Class, Tuesday, March 1st, 1930 at Babiarz home, 20917 Kenmore, HW. Call Captain Ron Utz to register 586-419-4609 or Bill Stano 313-343-5602. Come let your inner Sailor out. Especially those who may need this class to finish your full certificate. Remember other Squadrons around us teach some of the advanced classes that we do not have enough members to hold. Look to Dearborn, Birmingham, Mt. Clemens, and Detroit web sites for information and class times. Or look on line if that is a more convenient way to take class. Remember and educated boater is a safer boater. Let s save lives together. The United States Power Squadrons participates in the Vessel Safety Check Program through a Memorandum of Understanding between the United States Coast Guard, and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. A member wishing to become a vessel examiner must be a USPS member in good standing, at least 18 years of age and study the Vessel Safety Check Manual available on the USPS web site. When the member is comfortable with the VSC material in the manual, the member must pass a VSC Exam. After passing the exam, the member must complete five supervised VSC exams under the supervision of a qualified VSC Examiner. The Vessel Examiner must complete five vessel safety checks per calendar year to remain eligible to perform Vessel Safety Checks the following year. To become a Vessel Safety Examiner, please contact PDC Bill Stano, JN at 313-343-5602 or at wstano@comcast.net Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Tars and Tripe February 2016

4 Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Administrative Department Lt/C John J. Sulkowski, AP After a 15 year hiatus, I am back on the Bridge as the Administrative Officer. In 2001 I completed a 3 year run as Squadron Officer. As Admin, I will be overseeing meetings, programs, and rendezvous. Back by popular demand, will be a restaurant rendezvous to celebrate the Chinese New Year. This year the celebration, organized by John Metropoulos, will held Friday February 12th at the Golden Dragon, 18700 Mack Ave in Grosse Pointe Farms. Please see the flyer for all the details. RSVP to Lt Bonny Utz at 313-886-3495 or captainutz@gmail.com. Make checks payable to GPPS and mail to: Lt Bonny Utz 21502 Wedgewood Dr. GPW, MI 48236. All responses MUST be received by Sunday 07 February. The last time we did this was 2004, 12 years ago. 60 people maxi so call early to reserve your spot. United States Power Squadrons www.gpps-d9.com I have been told by a Chinese co-worker that the Chinese New Year starts Feb 8th and lasts for 2 weeks when the people go back to their home town or region to celebrate with family. This is why we have all missed it so much, we are family. Plus who else will let you hide in a Lion Dragon costume and bang on a drum in Feb. Right now I am trying to set up a speaker for the 10 Feb meeting with a representative from the Detroit River Keeper s organization. Good to hear what other organizations are doing on the Waterways so we can partner for common goals. In closing, please consider working the Detroit Boat Show at Cobo Hall, Detroit. It runs from Feb 13th through the 21st 2016. Admission is free for those who work the D9 booth. Contact me for details. John Sulkowski, 586-778-4473, jsulkow1@hfhs.org

Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Secretary Department Lt/C Rose Stano, P 5 It has been a hard job but P/D/C Bill Stano, P/D/C John Bennett and I have continued to represent the Grosse Pointe Power Squadron at the multiple Changes of Watch in District 9 this month. We were happy to be at the St. Clair Shores Sail and Power Squadron Change of Watch at Mac Ray, Saturday, January 9 2016. The food, bargain priced $20.02 for a sit down dinner and open bar, was excellent. The friendship was special as we said goodbye to the Old MacRay Owners who were closing up shop. It will be interesting to see how the New Management change things and I will miss the nautical motif that has always been welcoming to me. Some of the past members came forward to fill the Bridge, giving the Kreigs a much needed break. Then we were off to Dearborn on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Angelo s in Westland. Dearborn is a Strong Squadron who has a lot of support from their Past Commanders who regularly pitch in and recently they had to take over a boating class as the instructor passed away suddenly. Fred Hoitash is once again acting as Commander and will lead them forward. Lastly we drove up to Port Huron Power Squadron for their COW at the Dorsey House in Clyde, MI. We missed the usual dinner at the Brewery down on the River but the bar broke up the Banquet Room and the place could no longer house the large crowd. The Dorsey House was a great change with great food and good beer and Homemade Fudge for desert. There New Commander is retired Coast Guard, who is injecting new life into their group. I can t wait to see what they accomplish. Now the work at hand is formulating the new Roster. Over the New Year s holiday I called a number of members who did not have email addresses or birthdays listed. I was lucky to have a number of them get back to me. As we move to an electronic form of communication, it is important that we keep emails up to date. Please, if you changed your email or address, phone mail in the last year, send me the new information. We don t want to miss you. Also, I wish everyone who has a business, to advertise in our publication. Ask your nautical friends and business you frequent to consider an ad as well. We are fortunate that we do not need to fund raise for our Squadron but we also need to be self-sustaining in our publications. Please use the form and reach out. Bill Stano and I will be off on the Cruise, enjoying the Sunshine. Any questions about the March Newsletter, please contact the other Bridge Members. 8 www.facebook.com/uspowersquadrons In November 2015, the USPS s Educational Department launched a new social media campaign on USPS s Facebook page. It s intended to expand USPS s reach within the boater community, help viewers form and share favorable opinions about the quality and value of USPS expertise and educational products and services, and help local squadrons promote, grow, and celebrate their educational activities. Please help us get the word out by liking the USPS s Facebook page and engaging the posts (like, comment, share). Here is the URL: https://www.facebook.com/uspowersquadrons. The more members who engage, the greater our reach in the boater community will be. The posts USPS educational content, quizzes, how-to videos, and posts that help viewers find local courses in the classroom and on the water. We will also help celebrate squadrons educational programs and achievements and engage with content they post on their Facebook page; and we welcome original photos, graphics, videos, and stories about special educational events that you may wish to send us. Amy Townsend, Managing Editor of the Ensign, prepares posts on a variety of topics that appear at 1PM daily; and she occasionally posts more frequently. I prepare Educational Department posts that appear twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays at 5PM. For now, I welcome your feedback, suggestions, encouragement, and help. So that we can be sure to like your district and squadrons Facebook pages, please confirm the URLs by return email. Thank you! Social media is a powerful tool Let s use it together to reach a broader audience for USPS education, help our squadrons grow, and help make the water a better place! 10 Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Operation Good Cheer sm United States Power Squadrons www.gpps-d9.com Operation Good Cheer 2015 was another great year. This was our largest year every with 5,389 children and over 15,050 gifts.. Friday started off with 15 semi s running around southeast Michigan picking up gifts from donor locations. Most Fridays trucks do not arrive back at Pentastar hanger until 1100 but this year Santa s helper s did their better then ever as the first semi rolled in pack to the back doors at 0915 and the day did not stop from that moment. By mid day we knew we have reached our limits for the Pentastar main hanger and by late afternoon we had a new problem running out of floor space. We now know if we grow any larger we need a second hanger. Great problem to have. By days end not only did we have the hanger filled but I had 4 trucks sitting on the tarmac full. The night ended about 2100 hrs early for most years. A late night phone call from the tower noted that weather could be bad in the morning, warm, meaning fog. I liked the warm part but not the fog part. Ok so can we now truck to Saginaw and Benton Harbor vs fly. I had to dig deep into my list of helpers but yes the president of one of the trucking companies stepped up to the challenge and said his company would do the trips. Saturday morning was just as predicted fog and lots of it but at the gate was one semi with the president himself driving ready to be the helper of the year. So my main man on the ground crew, P/C Houmoth had him in the gate and running down the main taxi way to the hanger to be loaded. P/C Scott has been a very loyal Santa s helper for 8 or 10 years and as usual in full control of all movements of trucks on the airport grounds. Plus you can not miss him with his yellow flashing light!! To my surprise P/C Finley made it out of bed bright and early and was my photographer documenting the days events. I think he was taken back by the size and complexity of the days events. The day went perfect with only a few last minute changes but 8 semi s loaded very timely for delivers to 13 agencies in the SE Michigan. All totaled we delivered by air and truck to 76 agencies in Michigan. 28 trucks and 168 planes and 400 volunteers made OGC happen. Again this just shows the generosity of many to give gifts to needed children along with the generosity of trucking companies, pilots, volenteers to unload, load and just work the two days, food poured in both days from the community. Just one great way to start the Christmas season off. Next year may be a new surprise for all so look forward to hearing and seeing OGC in the Thanksgiving day parade. That is all I am saying at this time. Let me say Thank all the USPS members that showed up over the two days. Your Santa s Helpers. We can not do this without you. P/C Mike.

We would appreciate input from squadrons on what kind of merchandise you would like to see at the store. We need to order by mid-february, so please poll your members at upcoming meetings this month. If there are clothing items of interest, size information would be useful also. We look forward to providing this opportunity to squadron members at the conference and hope for a successful store. NOTE: We will be able to take credit cards if anyone is curious about that. You may send your recommendations to me and I will pass along to the ordering committee.
