Auchtermairnie Care Home Care Home Service Star Road By Kennoway Leven KY8 5SF Telephone: 01333 352560 Type of inspection: Unannounced Inspection completed on: 16 August 2017 Service provided by: Fairfield Care Scotland Ltd Service provider number: SP2007009107 Care service number: CS2007153219

About the service Auchtermairnie Care Home is owned and managed by Fairfield Care Scotland Limited. The care service has been registered since 23 July 2007 to provide permanent and respite residential care for 24 older people. The care home is situated on the rural outskirts of Kennoway, midway between Glenrothes and Leven. Accommodation is offered within a contemporary two level house providing 22 bedrooms, two of which can accommodate couples. All rooms have en-suite facilities. A small area for on-site parking is provided at the front of the building. There were 20 people resident in the home on the day of inspection. What people told us 'Although it cannot always be easy for the staff, I appreciate their commitment. I am more than satisfied with the care, friendship and understanding shown to my relative.' 'The management and staff have been so helpful to ensure that my relative settled in quickly. Her room is spacious and 'homely' with pictures and other mementoes from her own house making a huge difference. Staff have been so helpful on visits from friends and family and the recent birthday party organised in-house for her was exceptional, catering for 15 friends and family. She loves the food and the varied choice. It is nice for us to be offered coffee, tea and cakes at every visit. From my experience, I would say this care home tops the list for attention to detail and making each resident feel at home.' 'My relative has improved no end since moving into the home. The facilities meet her needs well but it is the quality of the staff, from manager to the handyman that have made her stay so enjoyable. Family and friends visiting are also made to feel part of the 'family' at Auchtermainrie.' 'It would be good if the home can sit the residents in the garden sometimes.' 'I am extremely pleased with the quality of care my relative has received during the three years she has been resident. The management and staff group are very stable and consistent, with little turnover and have been very good in providing the best level of care and support.' 'Auchtermairnie provides a first class service for my relative. The manager is an excellent leader and all her staff are trained to provide the highest standard of care. A real team effort. Our family all feel that we are privileged to have our relative cared for in such a loving and caring environment. It gives us peace of mind knowing this. We cannot praise the team highly enough. All round excellence.' 'When researching care for our relative we visited several care homes. We were immediately struck by the welcome we received from the staff. There was a warmth/personal touch from individual staff members every time we visited before she moved in. The home was very accommodating (including help from the handyman) as we prepared her room so it felt like 'home'. We continue to experience a warm welcome every time we visit. I wish the garden and grounds were kept to a higher standard (litter and weeds) as our relative enjoyed and maintained her garden at home. It is a pity they don't make more use of the gardens. I am also not aware of many activities being organised outwith the home, eg visits to local cafes.' 'I am very happy and safe here. I feel very well looked after.' 'I have got to know most residents on this floor. I seem to visit everybody when I am in.' 'We had a great night on Saturday. The entertainment was excellent.' page 2 of 7

Self assessment N/A From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership not assessed not assessed What the service does well The atmosphere in the home was calm and people were content and were chatting to each other and to staff. We saw that visitors were welcomed and made to feel at home. The resident group had a range of different support needs and we were impressed at how the staff supported people discreetly and with skill. Activities for people who were restless and at risk of being agitated were seen in use and we saw how effective these were in supporting each person. Staff recognised and properly responded to residents' changing needs including where they were showing signs of stress and distress. Good health was maintained through links with local agencies and we found that people were supported to an excellent standard. Help for attending appointments was arranged as required. We saw in care plans that all legal documentation was in place to support how decisions were made on behalf of each residents where they were not able to make these decisions independently. We found that television was not used for background sound but programmes were a positive choice for several people. Residents told us about recent party which included entertainment preferred by the person at the focus of the party. Families gave examples of entertainment they had attended with their relative and how much fun was enjoyed at these events. Meals were enjoyed and snacks were available at all times. Fortification of meals was seen where this was indicated and we found that monitoring weights meant that staff could assist discreetly. We were impressed at how skilfully this was managed. Residents told us about helping in daily tasks around the home. These tasks gave a sense of purpose and satisfaction for the people involved. The manager continues as a Dementia Ambassador and has ensured that staff promote a very positive ethos and culture of respect and dignity which were clearly evident and part of daily practice in the home. We saw a focus on 'can do' approach with a number of best practice champions promoting excellent standards of care in areas including dementia, oral health care and continence promotion. This all provided a solid foundation that linked positively to every aspect of the service provided. What the service could do better The manager told us about some plans in place for developing the service. The plans included further training for staff, including some staff new to the service. page 3 of 7
