Stay tuned for more information. Around the Room Updates: George Todd: Sailing Heritage Society SHS has been doing business for 15 years. The boat has a capacity of 40, and has licensed captains to take out the boat. About 200 trips per year are donated to places like Fred Hutch. Raise money for donated trips by doing paid charters. Will be doing Christmas trips this year still openings, reserve your spot Alice Winship: SHIPS/PSP/NWS - NWS Music Program Chantey Sing on board V5 tonight. NWS - October 17 th Concert Broadside at CWB NWS - November Chantey Sing is lined up. PSP - planning for next year PSP Sea Chantey Camp of the Columbia with Washington State Parks. SHIPS music lined up for November 7 th event 6 groups in all. Charles See: BMA/YMTA Oceanography 101 is being taught at BMA, this counts for college credit for the students and is a reduced price compared to what they would pay at UW. There are 31 students enrolled. Ballard High School will participate in Fisherman s Terminal Fall Festival.

A Teacher from BMA will be headed to Thailand in March with a group of students, some from Ballard, others from all over the place. Sail Sand Point reservations have been difficult. NOAA grant has two more years, but when it expires BMA will have to beef up their fundraising efforts to cover the difference. It has been very helpful. Diana Hennick: NW Seaport No new news on the lightship. WYCO foundation Grant received. Will fund technology upgrades (new computer, camera) and curriculum development for youth programs. Very exciting! Colleen Wagner: Discovery Modelers Working on a Radio Control class, having difficulty with instructor scheduling. New Brochure for programs. Youth class scheduled for the end of the month. Doing an inventory of supplies and models. Working on planning the November event. Steve Holmes: Virginia V V5 is available for fundraisers or other events. All of the Working Group participants are welcome to use the ship it is a resource and should be used. Talk with Steve if interested. The ship has a capacity of 150 guests. Having a difficult time getting younger generations on board the ship. It has a great crew and it is a great education ship. Part of mission is to involve young people in educational programs. Could possibly partner with BMA to get youth aboard and working on the ship?? Kim Dubois: Virginia V Trivia Night last night. Had a good turnout, but would like to see even more people. Engineers without Borders event in Armory last night, several attendees came aboard and were interested in the engine. Chantey Sing tonight. Sunday Scandinavian Cruise annual event. Tickets still available. Education on the ship grant money available talk with Diana about how to go about pursuing it. Emma at CWB is also a good resource for youth programs. Presenting to Convention Bureau soon. In addition to the November event, V5 will be open and doing cookies, crafts & carols in December perhaps on Sunday, December 13 th. Lee Bjorkland: Flying Dragons In regards to Youth Programs Evaluation Richmond Dragonboating has a mindblowing evaluation process good example. In regards to attracting youth to your programs 1. The type of crowd you attract is a direct function of how you are marketing yourself. In order to attract a different

crowd, you need to change your strategies. Youth: electronic, e-mail, websites, twitter, etc. Adults over 40: print media, newspapers, magazines, radio, etc. Involve youth in your marketing and programming strategies to really get their perspective on what works. Dragon boaters are in their 6 th year, and have attracted 20 new members this year. They are on the lake paddling over 200 times each year. Did a training for Lake Washington paddlers. Seattle Flying Dragons are experts at capsizing drills they can right a boat that has capsized and get all paddlers inside in 12 minutes. Harbor Patrol knows that they do their own self-rescues. Doing a 6 mile race at Seward park. Participated in the Norm Blanchard Regatta. Lee was in an El Toro. Annual Meeting on the 19 th. Halloween doing reverse Trick-or-Treating go to Houseboats and give them candy. Dick Wagner & Betsy Davis: CWB Blanchard Regatta was a success. Did an evening fundraiser event Boatshop and Waterway 4 Winter Work Party. Was successful and a great kickoff to the winter work party. Winter Work Party will include: new anchoring (pilings), moving buildings around, new dock connections, new gangways, daylighting, removing creosote dolphins, etc. Cama Beach Event talking with locals about the benefits of CWB at Cama Beach and what is needed to provide all the benefits of CWB at Cama Beach. It is doing really well, and is bound to be one of the best parks in Washington. Schematic design for the Education Center in the park is complete. The architects have done a really great job of being clever with the small site. It will be fun to walk around, and will be full of character. It is exciting. Half of the cubic square footage will be boatshop space, it will have admin space, classroom and meeting space, and retail space. CWB will have two staff furloughs: November 20 th 27 th and December 24 th 31 st. This is a way to creatively deal with the economy and current financial struggles. NLU Full city council endorsed the resolution to have Seattle Parks evaluate the space as a park acquisition. It is non-binding and not a done-deal, but it is an exciting step and means the government is willing to work on acquiring it. MOHAI agreement was adopted by parks. It will go to full city council next week. Big Picture Grants. Heritage Grants are due December 7 th. Seattle Foundation Grants are due November 15 th. For these grants you must meet with a grant coordinator before you can apply. CWB met with them to submit a grant for collaborative planning and money for operating support. We were invited to apply for a grant, and if we received it the Working Group would have to decide what to do with the support money! Paul D Orsea is coming to CWB the first week in November. The space needs survey is wrapping up. Kai will be presenting the survey to Historic Seattle. The next step will be to identify space in the neighborhood that is viable.

Maritime Family Festival Planning November 7th The event will be held on Saturday, November 7 th, 10am 4pm - set-up begins at 7am. The event will be a maritime-themed event and will include: rummage and gift sales, crafts, hands-on activities, food, music, and more. Volunteers are needed for the event. The V5 will have an open ship, as well as a table inside. Arthur Foss may be open, depending on the progress of the lightship. There will be Maritime Music all day long. Crafts and other things to get involved with are highly encouraged. SHIPS will be doing a coloring table missing dragon boats image and dugout canoe. Colleen s bank is donating a popcorn machine for the event. Most likely there will be pizza or some other type of food. Ships in bottles exhibit Steam engine model Radio control models It would be nice if there were a boat or two that kids could sit in or climb around on. Working on a flyer for the event. NW Seaport will have stuff to sell. Fill out Colleens form and return it to her. It was also e-mailed to everyone in the Working Group. December Holiday Event Sunday, December 13 th Cookies, Crafts, and Carols will be on Sunday, Dec 13 th from 1-5pm. If anyone else wants to participate, talk to Kim. The Virginia V is a Coast Guard Certified ship which is great sometimes, but it also means that in order to have events on board, there must be a certain number of Coast Guard Certified people on board depending on the number of guests. This can be tricky sometimes. Questions for the Mayor s Office & Parks Department Regarding Park Construction Logistics related to construction 1. Logistics of key cards for access road: How will they work? who do we get copies from? what hours will they be needed? who do people contact in the Armory if they don't have one of the cards? 2. Will park construction affect the utilities in the Armory? Will the utilities disappear before all of the tenants vacate the building? Parking Management 1. What is the current status of the parking alternatives map? (Betsy asked Marshall and will follow up with Phil Fujii.)

2. Can the bus routes that pass Lake Union Park call out Lake Union Park at the nearest stops? (Who will follow up with Metro on this?) Bus drivers/streetcar Recording - can it say: Lake Union Park, Historic Ships Wharf, and The Center for Wooden Boats? 3. Over the next year, where will handicapped parking be for after-hours events on the Historic Ships Wharf (between 8-10pm)? Where will handicapped parking be during MOHAI construction when the armory lot is closed for staging? 4. What exactly is the scope of the operating agreement? Will it cover parking just between now and when MOHAI begins construction? Parking after that? For park activation? 5. The Vulcan parking garage on Westlake and Terry is a great deal and an easy walk, but it closes at 7pm on weekends. Can it be open later? If it closes at 7pm it is of no help to late night events at the Park and Wharf. 6. Will tenants of the Ships Wharf have 24 hour (vehicular) access to the wharf? Often there are night-time security people who need access to the ships, will they have access? Last Updates Winner of PSP s Maritime Music Contest is performing her song tonight at the Chantey Sing. Adventuress is visiting, check out the website for dates. Will participate in public sails, tugboat storytime, etc. Shipwright firm is evaluating Arthur Foss for the Landmark Challenge Grant. Will determine projects and the costs, which will help with fundraising. Very exciting! Third Friday speaker is on the 16 th. It is Dave Shaw about his trip on Europa. V5 is available for events and fundraisers. Let Colleen know if you are going to participate in the November event!!
