NORWIN SCHOOL DISTRICT JOB DESCRIPTION Head Custodian First Shift High School (Class II) JOB ANALYSIS The Head Custodian (Daylight) will provide leadership for the building custodial staff and perform a variety of tasks involving general care of the building and grounds. Work involves cleaning, repairing and light maintenance. Primary responsibility is to ensure students and staff have a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, work and develop. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Depending upon the individual assignment and building, the Head Custodian may perform all or a combination of the following: 1. Provides leadership for custodial staff and coordinates daily tasks and all additional tasks with building administration and supervisor. 2. Provides leadership for class III custodians, part time custodians, floaters and substitutes by helping in the coordination of events/assignments, and maintaining proper work related communication between employees. 3. Performs all duties and ensures custodial staff maintains high standards of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency. 4. Maintains security and safety of building as assigned by building principal or supervisor. 5. Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas clean, safe and neat at all times. 6. Performs snow removal and salting. 7. Cleans, dust mops, scrubs and waxes resilient floors with use of appropriate equipment (i.e., scrubber, buffer) as needed to protect floor finish. 8. Dry mops floors in rooms and hallways. 9. Cleans cafeteria floors of any spills and/or debris, and properly disposes of refuse. Custodians will routinely break-down cafeteria tables/benches for cleaning in between table/bench tops, sides, legs and underside of each. Tables/benches will be cleaned during summer cleaning; breaks; and as determined by the supervisor. 10. Cleans and vacuums carpeted surfaces. 11. Spot cleans and scrubs walls. 12. Empties wastebaskets and properly disposes of refuse. 13. Cleans, scrubs, and disinfects bath and shower room areas, including walls, sinks, bowls and glass mirrors. Stocks toilet paper and towel dispensers. 14. Changes light bulbs. 15. Cleans whiteboards (blackboards where necessary) and erasers.

16. Cleans and disinfects water fountains. 17. Cleans, and disinfects as needed, chairs and desk tops in classrooms and office areas. 18. Cleans glass in windows and doors both on the inside and outside. 19. Acts as backup pool operator in the absence of the second shift pool operator. Performs all duties of the second shift pool operator in their absence. 20. Performs on-site chemical adjustments to keep swimming pool water safe, clean, and in accordance with all applicable laws. 21. Back washes pool filter when required, and in accordance with all applicable laws. 22. At a minimum, performs once a day testing of swimming pool chlorine and PH levels. The test results are to be entered into a maintenance log located in the pool filter room. Additional testing may be required and if so will also be recorded in the maintenance log. Both testing and maintenance records are to be performed in accordance with all applicable laws. 23. Maintains a log of all swimming pool chemical applications; CO2 usage; chlorine usage readings; and pool maintenance performed. 24. Maintains a log of total coliform bacteria tests performed by an outside testing laboratory. 25. Moves furniture/equipment within buildings and sets up cafeteria for lunch and programs as required for various activities and as directed by the supervisor, principal and/or designee. The head custodian must have approval of department supervisor(s) and/or principal to direct other custodians. 26. Repairs, sands, and scrapes surfaces, walls, ceilings, railings, doors, and trim for finishing applications. 27. Perform finishing tasks such as painting, staining, and varnishing as directed and assigned. 28. Maintains cleanliness in classrooms, including but not limited to trash cans, floors, chalkboard, pencil sharpener, desk tops, walls, window sills, window glass, door glass and sinks. 29. Maintains cleanliness in restrooms and locker rooms, including but not limited to trash cans, sinks, toilets, urinals, partitions, walls, lockers, dusting, graffiti removal, floors, and shower stalls. 30. Maintains cleanliness in the cafeteria, including but not limited to floors, walls, and trash cans. 31. Maintains cleanliness in gyms and auditoriums, including but not limited to floors, walls, trash cans, bleachers, seating, graffiti removal, and dusting. 32. Maintains cleanliness in hallways, entrances and stairs, including but not limited to glass, floors, water coolers, steps, handrails, walls, and dusting (high & low). 33. Maintains cleanliness in the office area, including but not limited to trash cans, floors, walls, and dusting. 34. Maintains cleanliness in storage room(s), including but not limited to keeping them accessible and organized.

35. Maintains cleanliness around the exterior of the building, including but not limited to sidewalks, signage, lighting, grass, landscaping, playground, and fields. 36. Performs grounds maintenance work including but not limited to grass cutting, weeding, trimming, mulching, and seeding, as necessary to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition. 37. Maintains cleanliness in kitchens, including but not limited to floors, walls, equipment, storage, and trash. 38. Complies with District policy, local, state, and federal laws and procedures for the use, storage, and disposal of waste, cleaners, chemicals, and all other products and materials used in performing required duties. 39. Inventories all district owned hand tools, equipment and supplies and orders custodial materials and supplies for the building as needed for building use. 40. Performs all work assigned in a safe manner using all safety equipment when required and maintains all tools in safe operating condition. 41. Completes work assignments professionally and in a timely manner. 42. Informs department supervisors and principal of equipment failure, needed repairs and building maintenance concerns. 43. Performs such other tasks and responsibilities as the Principal, Supervisor, or designee may assign. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS 1. High School Diploma or equivalent. 2. Three years experience in school district maintenance/custodial work or a related field preferred. 3. Demonstrate leadership ability with a multi-person staff, i.e. can plan organize, provide leadership, communicate, manage tasks simultaneously, develop a work schedule for self and others, and accomplish work on time and within an established schedule. 4. Demonstrate initiative, flexibility, dependability and skill in custodial duties. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Physical Demands: Ability to work off of ladders, scaffolds and at heights. Ability to regularly lift a minimum of 25 pounds and up to 50 pounds and on occasion be able to lift 50 100 pounds. Physical ability to perform any and all work required. Possession of and consistent ability to exercise physical and manual dexterity, including the ability to grasp and maintain control of equipment, pushing, pulling, twisting at the waist, bending, climbing, and balancing. Ability to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Knowledge of the proper use of chemicals. Ability to use a computer. Ability to maintain a professional relationship and communicate with supervisors, other staff, parents, students, and the public. Ability to satisfactorily complete all performance responsibilities listed within this document. Licenses and Certificates: Currently hold and maintain the appropriate pesticide applicators certification (currently a Certified Public Pesticide Applicator in Core and Category 24 Swimming Pools). In addition you must be a Certified Pool Operator (CPO). It is your responsibility to maintain the necessary credits and testing required to maintain each of these certification. To be in compliance, both certification (pesticide Category 24 and CPO) must be current and or obtained within ninety (90) calendar days of the first day of employment in this position. Must obtain and maintain all current and future certificates and licenses mandated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and/or the Norwin School District that are required to perform this job. Clearances: Every employee must submit an Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification Form as required under Pennsylvania Act 24 of 2011, Act 34 (Criminal Record Check), Act 151 (Child Abuse History Check), FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) Criminal History Check, and Act 126 Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Training. As per Act 15 of 2015, all clearances must be renewed every five (5) years. Also, as of December 22, 2014, Act 168 of 2014 requires all newly hired employees to provide the District with the Sexual

Misconduct/Abuse Disclosure Release Form for all former employers in which they had direct contact with children and any current employer/s. A pre-employment drug testing will be required upon offer of employment. The District may not hire any applicant for a position until the employment history review process has been completed. REPORTS TO Building principal, with input from, and in cooperation with, the Director of Facilities and Property Services. Secondary report in the event primary report is unavailable: Supervisor of Energy Conservation and Custodial Services. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Full-time employee as per the negotiated contract between A.F.S.C.M.E. Local #1474 and the Norwin School District. EVALUATION Annual evaluation will be performed by Building Principal in conjunction with the Director of Facilities and Property Services. Approved by Administration and provided to the Board of Education on April 17, 2017.
