Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Newark Arts Alliance Dennis Lawson, Executive Director (302) 743-8927 dlawson@newarkartsalliance.org www.newarkartsalliance.org NEWARK ARTS ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES WINTER / SPRING 2015 CLASSES Newark, DE (January 14, 2015) The Newark Arts Alliance (NAA) is pleased to announce our Winter/Spring 2015 Class Schedule, which includes art and writing classes for adults, teens, and children. To register for classes at the NAA: Call us at 302-266-7266 or visit during regular hours, or mail your completed form to the Newark Arts Alliance, 276 E. Main St., Suite 102, Newark, DE 19711. Please register at least one week before class begins. Classes are held at the NAA and taught by professionals. Class prices are reduced for NAA Members. (Prices are listed as M for Members and NM for Non-Members.) Class brochure / registration form available at: http://www.newarkartsalliance.org/classes/ Adults and Teens Drawing Basics. 5 Wednesdays (Jan 28, Feb 4, 11, 18, 25), 6:45 p.m. 8:45 p.m. Ages 14 to adult. $84 M/$94 NM. Students will develop fundamental drawing skills and techniques using various media, working from observation as well as from photographs. Compositional aspects of drawing will be stressed. Students will bring to class a large sketchbook. For Beginner to Intermediate students. Taught by Jennifer Polillo. The Artist s Way Support Group. Second and Fourth Tuesdays of each month beginning February 10, ending April 28, 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. FREE, but please pre-register by contacting the Newark Arts Alliance. Using Julia Cameron s book The Artist s Way, the group will work through exercises aimed at confronting blocks to creativity. Please purchase the book before the first meeting. Facilitated by Cyndie Kondelin.

Collage Keepsake Box. One Saturday (Feb 21), 1:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. Ages 12 to adult. $47 M/$52 NM. Use the spontaneity of collage to create an improvised design for the lid of a keepsake box or other wooden object of your choice (provided). A wide variety of papers and clip art will be available to cut, color and arrange into a pleasing design that will surprise and delight you. Collage is a fun introduction to art making, especially for those who may fear drawing or painting. It s also great for artists working in other mediums to develop imagery using new materials. Bring a snack for a 15 min. break. Taught by Terry Foreman. Writers Workshop. Third Thursday of February, March, and April, 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Ages 18 adult. FREE, but must pre-register by contacting the Newark Arts Alliance. Open to writers of all genres (fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, drama, etc.). We will offer praise and constructive criticism for each other s work. Participants will submit manuscripts (max length: 10 pages of prose or 5 individual poems) at least two weeks before each meeting. Facilitated by NAA Executive Director Dennis Lawson. Open Forum Drawing and Painting. 5 Wednesdays (Mar 4, 11, 18, 25, Apr 1), 6:45 p.m. 8:45 p.m. Ages 14 to adult. $84 M/$94 NM. Students will develop artistic skills and learn new techniques. This course is for Beginner and Intermediate artists who would like have a place to meet other artists and unleash creative energy in a laid back and creative atmosphere. Taught by Jennifer Polillo. Mosaic Workshop Intensive. 2 Saturdays (Apr 11, 1:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m., Apr 18, 1:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m.). Ages 14 to adult. $84 M/$94 NM. Get addicted to this fun medium, especially for those with a creative urge who may be fearful of more traditional art forms. We ll use the direct method of gluing whole and nipped glass and ceramic tiles to a treasure box or picture frame. We ll tint our grout to suit our designs and learn out to apply and remove it. Additional finishing techniques will also be covered including finishing painting and installation techniques. Taught by Terry Foreman. Write! Publish! Sell! 1 Monday (Apr 20, 7:00 p.m. 8:30 p.m.). FREE, but must pre-register by contacting the Newark Arts Alliance. Whether you want to write a book as a marketing tool for your business, for your career as a writer, or as a creative hobby, find out how YOU can self-publish a book and sell it online. This course will take you on a tour of writing, editing, pricing, publishing, and marketing your book, plus a whole lot more. You will leave with a solid understanding of the self-publishing industry and how you and your book fit in. Taught by Lois Hoffman.

Girls Art Night Out (GANO)! A unique opportunity to gather with women, create art, and enjoy wine, cheese, and conversation a grownup playgroup for women ages 21 and over. Needle Felting. 1 Friday (Mar 20), 7:30 p.m. 10:00 p.m. Ages 21+. $30M/$35 NM. Needle felting is an easy craft that involves poking wool fiber until it binds together to form a solid shape. We will be making a variety of shapes; options will include flower, heart, star, tree, pumpkin, and a variety of others. Taught by Cheryl Ackerman. Beginning Bellydance. 1 Friday (April 17), 7:00 p.m. 9:30 p.m. Ages 21+. $30M/$35 NM. Come shimmy, hip bump, snake arm and camel during this introduction to Middle Eastern dance and music. Wear any comfortable clothes and bring a hip scarf if you own one. This dance is often performed barefoot, but students can also wear flexible dance shoes. Taught by Lorelei. Young artists will explore and experiment with a variety of media in this fun-filled class. The focus will be on process over product and getting familiar with drawing, painting, and mixed media techniques in order to express ourselves in new ways. Taught by Jennifer Polillo. Beginning Watercolor. 4 Tuesdays (April 7, 14, 21, 28), 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Ages 8 to 13. $76M/$86NM. Students will learn a variety of watercolor painting techniques, including washes, wet-in-wet brush work, dry brush work, glazing and color mixing. Students will practice these techniques in class and then produce a small example of each one. Then students will take what they have learned and produce a complete painting. Taught by Karen Berstler.

Teacher Bios Cheryl Ackerman has a doctorate in educational psychology, works as a program evaluator, and has a passion for fiber. She has taught frequently at NAA. Karen Berstler earned a BFA from Kutztown University. She is a Signature Member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, and has had shows at the NAA and with the Philadelphia Watercolor Society. Terry Foreman has a BA in Fine Arts and has taught art in a private school as well as area art centers and in her home. Her over 25 years of teaching experience has included a variety of media, most recently mosaics and collage. Her art can be seen at the Newark Arts Alliance. Lois Hoffman recently published The Self-Publishing Roadmap. She is a writer, speaker, workshop facilitator, and coach for new and experienced writers. Dennis Lawson is the Executive Director of the Newark Arts Alliance. He has an MFA in Creative Writing from Rutgers-Camden, an MA in English from the University of Delaware, and a BA in English from the University of Connecticut. Lorelei (Rebecca Sullivan) is a lifelong student of music and dance, performing Middle Eastern Bellydance. She has a background in high school education. Jennifer Polillo holds a Certificate in Painting from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and a BFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Over the past 15 years she has taught students of all ages at UArts, PAFA, NAA and at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts. ABOUT THE NEWARK ARTS ALLIANCE The mission of the Newark Arts Alliance, a locally supported nonprofit organization, is to provide the citizens of greater Newark with the opportunity to explore and display their creativity, as well as to participate in cultural events that build community. The Newark Arts Alliance presents several exhibitions each year to showcase art by local artists. The organization also offers a variety of art classes for students of all ages and skill levels, a popular children s summer camp, and events dedicated to the visual, literary, and performing arts. Art is displayed and sold in the exhibition gallery and the gallery shop. The Newark Arts Alliance recently celebrated 20 years of serving the community (1993 2013). The Newark Arts Alliance is located in Market East Plaza at 276 East Main Street, Suite 102, Newark, Delaware 19711.
