7 Hot Cocoa and Health A cup or two of cocoa each day may do more than ward off a chill. Cocoa is rich in antioxidants, potassium, iron and other nutrients. Hot chocolate is also chock-full of flavonoids, powerful compounds that are being studied for their link to fighting cancer, preventing stroke and delaying dementia and other cognitive problems. Plus, sipping this sweet treat can make you feel better not only because the drink is delicious, but also because it raises the body s levels of serotonin, which produces endorphins and can banish a bad mood. Stop by the Lobby for winter treats every Sunday at 3:30 p.m. for your cup of steamy hot chocolate! (L1-L & L2-L) Medicare Benefits for Physical and Occupational Therapies Medicare makes annual changes that affect your coverage. Do you understand your Medicare therapy benefits for 2016? Please join Mike Renema, PT, owner of In Home Rehab, as he presents information on your Medicare coverage for therapy services. Join us for a free presentation: 2016 Medicare Therapy Benefits Courtesy of In Home Rehab Tuesday, February 9, at 1:30 P.M. in L1-2 & Tuesday, February 16, at 1:30 P.M. in L2-L Interesting Chocolate Facts By Brian K. Rosso Chocolate is a food enjoyed by most people, especially at Valentine s Day. Here are some interesting facts about chocolate: Chocolate is a great source of antioxidants, which have been shown to reduce a person s risk of developing cancer and heart disease. Snickers is the No. 1 selling chocolate bar in the world. Eating dark chocolate in moderation can lower a person s cholesterol levels. Americans prefer milk chocolate over dark chocolate; however, the consumption of dark chocolate is increasing. Try to eat dark chocolate containing at least 40 percent cacao (will be stated on the chocolate candy wrapper) for the most health benefits. The first United States chocolate factory was built in 1765. Chocolate can be deadly to dogs. The average American eats 12 pounds of chocolate every year. Chocolate can offer some health benefits, but it should be eaten in moderation because of the calories associated with the fat and sugar content. Happy Valentine s Day! News & Notes DID YOU KNOW? Every evening on the main floor there are treats and beverages served! Come and join us at 8 p.m. We hope to see you there!
