As I begin club visitations, I thank you for the trust you have placed in me as District Governor. Working together we can make this an outstanding year as we begin our second century of Rotary, a second century of Service Above Self. In this newsletter is the club visitation schedule. There have been some changes from the one distributed at training sessions this past spring, so please review and compare to note the updates. I have so much to learn about all of your great service projects and work in the four avenues of service. As we look forward to August, we focus our attention on Membership and Extension. Membership is always a priority for clubs as we attempt to attract new members to keep our clubs vital and strong. A couple of ways to discover potential new members is to take some time to think about the people with whom we come in contact on a regular basis. Are any of them potential members? Sometimes potential members are so close that we forget to recognize them. Another possibility is to form a committee in your club to focus on membership and look at places to discover new members, Nicolette S. If so, those are potential new members. Tell the Rotary story! One of the goals of RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammer and also one of our district goals is to increase our membership by one net member per club. This may sound easy, but requires our attention and effort. Extension is also another way of increasing membership. We welcome two new clubs to our district, Council Bluffs Centennial and Papillion/LaVista. This brings to 46 the number of clubs in our district. Look at communities around you. Might one of them be a potential site of a Rotary club? I look forward to seeing all of you over the next few months. If I can be service, please contact me.
THE ROTARY FOUNDATION PERMANENT FUND The purpose of the Permanent Fund of The Rotary Foundation is to provide a secure, predictable and reliable income stream to supplement monies raised for current program expenditures through annual giving, thereby guaranteeing a minimum level of program activity and enabling new or expanded program development as future needs are identified. There are three categories of giving to the Permanent Fund. The Benefactor program is for individuals who identify bequest commitments and life insurance policies ranging from $1000 to $9999. The Bequest Society is for individuals or couples who identify bequest commitments and unpaid whole and universal life insurance policies $10,000 and over. The Major Donor is for individuals or a couple who has contributed a combined personal outright gift of $10,000 or more to the Rotary Foundation. There are six levels of giving for Major Donors and the Bequest Society with Level VI being a commitment of $1,000,000 and more. The donor is recognized with a crystal and a pin with a diamond for each level of giving. AUGUST IS MEMBERSHIP & EXTENSION MONTH YOUTH EXCHANGE CORNER Participation in Youth Exchange by Rotary Clubs cannot be improvised; careful planning is needed. Therefore, here is a brief outline of what clubs should be doing in the next six months if they want to participate in the Youth Exchange Program during the 2006-2007 school year. Yes, I do mean 2006-2007! JULY Decide if the club may want to participate. Appoint a Youth Exchange Committee of three or more members, and "read up" on the Youth Exchange Program. Obtain some materials and brochures from RI headquarters. AUGUST Talk to the high school (or schools) to see if they will accept an inbound student. Find out who is the school official or contact person is for foreign exchange students. SEPTEMBER Begin to seek candidates to go outbound in 2006-2007. Distribute announcements and brochures about the Youth Exchange Program to the schools or youth groups in your area. OCTOBER and NOVEMBER Obtain preliminary applications from outbound candidates. The club's Youth Exchange Committee should interview them and their parents to determine of they would be good ambassadors to represent Rotary and the USA. Forward approved applications to the Youth Exchange Officer covering your area, either Steve Gerdes for the Omaha metro area and Iowa clubs, or Harlow Hyde for the rest of the District. DECEMBER The District interviews take place, early in December, probably in Lincoln. Each Rotary Club should send a representative to the meeting. At all stages in the process, clubs should communicate frequently with the District Youth Exchange Officers. Let us know how things are going, and ask questions! ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CENTENNIAL CONVENTION CHICAGO, ILLINIOS JUNE 18 21, 2005 An estimated 140 Rotarians from District 5650 attended the Centennial Convention in Chicago. In all, there were 41,800 in attendance from 161 different countries. The setting was McCormick place. Anyone who has been there knows how massive this convention center is. What a splendid event it was and we found most things went without a hitch. Much like past conventions, there was a great deal of celebration going on as Rotarians attended the plenary sessions, listened to world-renowned speakers, and heard about award-winning programs. And, the entertainment was splendid. There were workshops and symposiums, offering an opportunity to participate in discussions about many Rotary Programs and areas of concern in a more intimate setting. There were special lunches for Club Presidents, Presidents-elect and Paul Harris Fellows. There were gala dinners and receptions for Major Donors to The Rotary Foundation. And, the Northland Breakfast was held at the Navy Pier giving us an opportunity to enjoy a pleasant morning walk along the water and dine in a picturesque setting. District Governor Jim Blue arranged for a District Reception one of the few opportunities for those attending from the district to see each other during the Convention. A highlight for many was participating in Home Hospitality the chance to be hosted for an evening by local Rotarians. Because this was the centennial year, there were many first time / one time activities. There was a Rotary Centennial Parade in downtown Chicago with hundreds of entries from all over the world. A time capsule was set up letters were collected from clubs with the hope that they will be read on the 200 year anniversary of Rotary. A special Centennial Convention cancellation was available to be placed on any post cards or letters mailed from the Convention Center. There was a massive display depicting the history of polio eradication. A new penny press machine was in place that allowed those in attendance to imprint one of 4 Rotary emblems on a penny. Rotarians had an opportunity to have a copy of the Century of Service Rotary book signed by the current and past Rotary International Presidents in attendance. And much, much more. Rotary International President for 2005-2006 Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammer sent us off with encouraging words look for continuity and cooperation, support our youth programs, make this the year for women in Rotary. He has returned to a basic motto Service above Self. He believes that if every youngster could participate in youth exchange, we would build world peace. And, he has put women in many high positions in his Rotary cabinet. He wishes us all the best of luck as we start our second century of service through Rotary. ROTARY DISTRICT 5650 CLUB RECOGNITION PROFILE 2005-2006 Rotary Year Club Recognition Profile Defined The Club Recognition Profile program of Rotary District 5650 is the program used to determine the progress of the clubs in the district in various activities and programs of Rotary. The program determines the Top Ten Clubs in the District that are recognized at the Annual District Conference of Rotary District 5650 and is used to assist in determining the Outstanding Club Presidents. Full training on the program, forms and tracking is conducted at the annual Presidents-Elect / Secretary Elect Training Seminar Administrative Session. Monthly Progress Report The Rotary District Newsletter includes a report every month showing each club and the points earned to date (see page 7 of this newsletter) Measurement Criteria The measurement criteria is consistent from year to year. That makes it possible to see where a club has grown in a particular area or in overall activities. The criteria supports the goals and focus of Rotary International, District 5650, and effective Rotary Clubs. Profile Report Forms Forms are available at www.rotarydistrict5650.org.
