Innovation Grant Narrative THIS IS NOT AN APPLICATION The Barbershop Harmony Society is committed to the success and growth of our chapters and districts and recently completed a project in 2013 to visit every chapter of our organization with the goal of interviewing members to better identify 5 common areas of focus that would be paramount to the success and growth of our chapters. The Barbershop Harmony Society is making funds available in 2015 for any chapter/district within the BHS or 501(c)3 organization that has an innovative concept that would positively affect one or more of the focus areas identified in the Chapter Visitation Program. The 5 focus areas identified in the Chapter Visitation Program are as follows: Recruiting: Find new singers by increasing exposure of barbershop music in the community Communication: Overcome lack of awareness regarding information and resources Coaching: enhance desire for coaching by increasing the perception of its value; increase awareness and sustained use of available technologies for coaching Shared Activities: foster stronger fraternal/social connections beyond the chapter Modernize the Music: BHS music is seen by some as too old-fashioned and out-of-date. This perception impacts the ability to recruit and retain. Modernize the music and arrangements available through the Barbershop Harmony Society and get more people singing barbershop. What focus area(s) of the Chapter Visitation Program will be addressed through the proposed project? Your Organization Provide a very brief description of the mission, history and current focus of your organization, including any relevant web links. Describe your previous innovative efforts, including both your successes and failures. What have you learned from these efforts that will inform this project? Describe any unique capabilities and resources available to support project objectives. Your Community How do you define the community (or communities) you serve, including key needs, problems and opportunities? How does your organization currently connect with and serve the community? How have you engaged your community in the development of this proposal? How will this project allow you to more strongly connect with and serve the community?

Your Issue What is the issue(s) are you trying to solve with the project proposed in this application? How did you decide to work towards creating a new solution for this particular problem? How is the issue(s) you've identified typically addressed? Describe the current "status quo" approach and why something different is needed? Your Innovation Project Plan Please provide a detailed description of the following: OBJECTIVES What are the project goals and objectives? SIGNIFICANCE What is the project rationale? How is it significant and original? DESIGN What are the methods for achieving plan objectives, desired outcomes, and evaluating plan objectives? APPLICABILITY and TRANSFERABILITY How is it applicable to similar challenges within and across our organization? INNOVATION How does the project make something new, different, significantly improved, or enhanced in a creative way? IMPACT How will this project impact our organization? PRACTICALITY Define the extent to which project objectives address one or more of the Chapter Visitation Program focus areas identified earlier in the application. Management Plan and Budget Please provide an outline of proposed plan activities with related timelines with a budget detailing allocation of grant funds to specific plan expense items. An application without a Management Plan and Budget is not considered complete and will not be reviewed or considered. Please upload your Management Plan and Budget in whatever format is easiest for you. Acceptable file types include.doc,.docx,.xls,.xlsx and.pdf. Include the applicant organization's name in the file name and in the document itself.

Your Outcome We know that innovation takes time. In the question below, we want to learn about both the intermediate progress you'll make during this grant term and the community innovation you ultimately imagine. Provide a bulleted list of key outcomes you anticipate by the end of the grant term. Please relate these specifically to the Focus Areas described in Question #1. For each outcome, please describe in quantitative terms what will increase, decrease, improve, etc. because of the project you've proposed? Project Personnel Please provide a biographical sketch of the Project Leader and each team member expected to play a significant role in the execution of your work, including relevant expertise and commitment to innovation.
