Annual Research Funding Deadlines p6-8 Message from Paul Boyle Reading through your impressive list of research projects, I can t help but be impressed at both the range and the quality of the work being undertaken within the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. You should all be very proud of your achievements: the successful funding bids awarded, the papers published and presentations delivered, the books written and edited. The work of this college is a vital part of what makes Leicester such an excellent university. Thank you for all your hard work. A merry Christmas to you all and here s to further success in 2016. Paul Boyle President & Vice Chancellor 1

Research Director s News Dear Colleagues, I hope you find this Research Bulletin helpful and interesting. My original intention for this Bulletin was that it should show-case some recent research achievements in the College; however, when your Research Directors sent all those details in, I ended up with 37 pages of terrific material, all of which I wanted to include, to show the range of publications, events, grants, awards, prizes, and other excellent activities from this semester. As this would make for a very bulky Bulletin, we ve put all this material into a separate document (also attached) which I d encourage you to read over the vacation: to look out for collaborators and common interests, ideas for shared practice, but mainly to celebrate our genuinely vibrant, and really hard-working, research community. In this Bulletin, you ll also find an introduction to the CSSAH-focused staff in the Research and Enterprise Division (RED). We have an excellent team in place, so do please make the most of their time and expertise. You ll also find more about colleagues in the College s Research Management Group, who are happy to answer questions and offer advice; and details of forthcoming calls and events, including most immediately the next call for the College s Research Development Fund. A new addition to our research landscape next year will be the Cultural and Media Economies Institute, co-directed by Mark Banks and Doris Eikhof, and drawing together many colleagues across CSSAH. Congratulations to them on their success. In the spring, the University will be re-running the Research Networks competition, so look out for details of that, as it could greatly benefit our College. I hope that in the new year we can build ever closer links across our disciplines and enjoy more fully the intellectual life of our College. Next semester, we ll be introducing new models of peer reviewing and mentoring for discussion, which will build on current practices and relationships, and enable us all to benefit from colleagues expertise and experience. I ve very much enjoyed working with new and old colleagues across CSSAH and within RED this semester, and look forward to doing so again in 2016. Have a lovely Christmas and New Year break. With very best wishes, Gail Marshall College Research Director 2

Research Salons & updates The College is running 5 Research Salons this year to enable people to network with others who share their research interests in an informal setting over lunch. The next Salon will be on Tuesday 12 January on Gender, Sexuality and Justice led by Prof Vanessa Munro. Our one hour Research Updates focus on particular funding schemes and opportunities. An event to support Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship applications takes place on Wednesday 13 January. Further Updates this year will include sessions on Wellcome Trust funding, European Funding and the internal Prospects Fund. Full details & booking: https://www2.le.ac.uk/colleges/ssah/research/events Research Development Fund The next deadlines for the College Research Development Fund are 11 January and 3 May 2016. You can apply for up to 5,000 to initiate or bring to fruition a research project. Bids which have the potential to generate future income, such as grant capture, and which involve collaboration with external individuals and organisations are welcomed. Please contact your Departmental Research Director or Kathy Baddiley, kxb@le.ac.uk for full application information. Weekly funding Alert RED Alert From the end of January 2016 the Research & Enterprise Division will be sending out a regular email of opportunities tailored for academic staff in the College of Social Science, Arts & Humanities. These snappy emails will generally weekly but may be less regular over holiday periods. They will include: Research funding deadline alerts and research & consultancy bidding opportunities. Please sign up here (Uni login required) : https://www2.le.ac.uk/offices/red/college/ssah/red-alert Impact Fund A University fund has been agreed to support activities which develop research impact and underpin strong impact case studies for future research excellence frameworks.
