Directorate of Public Safety 255-0405 Home Security Measures: Our patrols have noticed some residents keeping their garage doors open at night or through the night. This encourages thieves and DPS highly recommends home owners QUIT THIS PRACTICE. Remember the key factor in most crimes is OPPORTUNITY. Here are a few simple tips to help secure your home: - Use a timer or photo electric cell that automatically turns a living room light on at dusk, particularly if you are going to be away at that time. - Leave a radio or the TV on when leaving home, even for short periods and brightly illuminate all entrances, preferably with vandal-proof fixtures. - Empty your mailbox or arrange to have it emptied as soon as mail is delivered. Stop delivery of the paper or have somebody pick it up. Never mention you are out of town or going away on any social media site! - Keep extra keys out of sight and in a safe place; never hide a key outside most hiding places are obvious to burglars. Never leave a note on the door explaining why you are not at home. - Start a buddy system with your neighbors in order to watch each other s homes; personnel who live on post can request courtesy checks by Fort Rucker police on their homes while they are out of town. Contact the Fort Rucker Police Desk at 255-2222 for more information.
