MEDAL/AWARDWINNINGSTUDENTS Every year gold medals are awarded to e meritorious students, whose overall performance is adjudged to be e best in eir respective programme. They are Dr. C. Chandrasekaran Gold Medal, Dr. K.Srinivasan Gold Medal, Dr. P.N.Mari Bhat Gold Medal and IIPS Gold Medals. Additionally a student from MPS programme, whose seminar paper is rated as e best is awarded Dr. J. R. Rele award. This award is based on e Seminar paper's content, and e student's presentation and defense skill, while presenting e paper at e IIPS Student-Faculty seminar. Silver medals (IIPS) are awarded to students whose overall performance is ranked as e second best, in e respective programmes MPS, DHPE, PGDCH, DPS (Distance Learning) and MPS (Distance Learning). This year e medals/awards were given to e students by e chief guest of e convocation, Dr.R.A.Badwe, Director, Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai. Andhra Pradesh Dissemination Seminar The Andhra Pradesh dissemination seminar of e You in India: Situation and Needs Study was organized at Hotel nd Green Park, Begumpet, Hyderabad on 22 January, 2010. The seminar was inaugurated by Shri J. Satyanarayana, Principal Secretary, Heal, Medical, and Family Welfare Department, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and Shri A.K.Parida, Principal Secretary, You Services, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh. Dr. Usha Ram, IIPS welcomed e delegates. The dissemination seminar was attended by over 150 delegates including government officials, executives from international and national organisations, academia, researchers and press. II. National Conference on Demographic Convergence, Demographic Dividend, Population Ageing and Implications for Heal and Socio-economic Transformations: Special Focus on Sou Indian States A seminar on 'Demography: International Perspective and Challenges in India' was held at IIPS during 12-13 February, 2010. The seminar was organized by IIPS, jointly wi e International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria, and Technology Information, Forecasting & Assessment Council (TIFAC), New Delhi. The main purpose of is seminar was to examine and understand e importance of some of e population issues particularly in e context of population and development linkages and e necessary meodological developments ereof. The primary aim of e seminar was to discuss various meodological issues in demographic data analysis wi a special attention on future research collaboration. Being a member of e National Committee for e India-IIASA programme, Prof. S. Lahiri of is Institute was initially contacted by TIFAC, New Delhi to organize such a seminar at IIPS, Mumbai. Around 25 renowned demographers and social scientists from India and Austria participated in is seminar. In e inaugaral function Prof. F. Ram, gave an introduction of e seminar and welcomed all e participants. Prof. Kirit Parikh, Chairman, Integrated Research and Development, and Chairman, National Committee for e India-IIASA Programme gave e Key note address. Dr. Wolfgang Lutz, Leader, World Population Program, Inaugural session of e National Conference (L-R) Prof. P.Arokiasamy, Dr.K.M.Sayanaryana, Dr. Mallick,Padma Bhusan Sri. T.V.Antony, Shri. V.K. Subburaj and Prof. S.Lahiri A ree day IIPS national conference was organized in e city of Chennai during 25-27 March 2010, to deliberate on new and emerging scientific emes namely: demographic convergence, fertility transition and determinants, heal, mortality and morbidity transition, age-structural transition and demographic dividend, labour force and migration, demography of ageing, heal and well being of older population including employment, pension, social security for e elderly population and heal care and heal financing issues in general. Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, in e context of second demographic transition. The conference was attended by a large number and a great blend of about 200 participants: government officials, distinguished researchers, veterans, senior academics, mid career and young scholars in e subject areas of demography, economics, social science and public heal. He en requested Ms. Vandana Krishna, Secretary, Women and Child Development and Mission Director, NRHM, Government of Maharashtra to chair e panel discussion and carry forward wi e proceedings. The conference provided an enabling forum and opportunity in which seniors shared eir expertise and experience wi young researchers while e later discussed eir creative research work while learning from e enlightened veterans. The conference was partly sponsored by e United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and Population Foundation of India (PFI), New Delhi. Prof. F. Ram, Prof. P. Arokiasamy, Dr. D.A. Panel Discussion on Women and Climate Change A half-day Panel Discussion on 'Women and Climate Change' was organised on 9 March, 2010 by IIPS. The symposium was supported by e UNFPAState Office, Maharashtra. Panel discussion on women and climate change ( L- R) Prof. F.Ram, Prof. Kamla Gupta, Ms. Vandana Krishna, Dr. Vibhuti Patel, Dr. D.K. Mangal Dr. D.K.Mangal, State Programme Coordinator and Ms. Anuja Gulati, State Programme Officer, from e UNFPA State Office, Maharashtra, Dr. Vibhuti Patel, Director, SNDT University and Prof. Kamla Gupta were e guest speakers. In addition to e guest speakers, an opportunity was given to IIPS students to share eir views in e panel discussion. Ms. Kshipra Jain, Ms. Nidihi Sharma and Mr. Aditya Singh, shared eir views on e eme. Dr. Usha Ram organised is panel discussion. The programme started wi a welcome address by Prof. F. Ram, Director, IIPS. In his speech, he re-iterated at e climate change is no longer a debatable issue and at e time has come where government policies need to intrinsically link climate change issues wi gender perspective, as women are most affected by climate change, particularly in India. He strongly recommended at in e policies and programmes at cover issues emerging due to changing climate, women s issues must find central place and provide opportunities and services to women For eir self development and not just because improving eir lives would help countries achieve development goals. Panel Discussion on 'Women and Climate Change STUDY TOUR IIPS organised a Panel Discussion on Women and Climate Change' on 9 March 2010. Students were encouraged to actively participate in is discussion and an opportunity was given to em to express eir views in is subject. Ms. Kshipra Jain talked about 'Problem of Women in naturally devastated areas'; Ms. Nidhi Sharma talked on 'Condition of special populations women who are forced to take professions such as sex-work due to natural disasters; and Mr. Aditya Singh expressed his views on 'Importance of improving access to reproductive heal services including contraception'. 8 Every year as a part of e academic programme, all e students of Master in Population Studies are taken for a study tour to different parts of e country. This year s study st st tour was undertaken from 21 March to 1 April, 2010. The study tour included visits to Bangalore, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Gandhigram, Thiruvananapuram and Kanyakumari. This tour provided an opportunity to e students to have direct interaction and exposure to two premier social science research institutions (Institute for Social and Economic Changes (ISEC), Bangalore and Center for Development Studies, Thiruvananapuram), two Population Research Centers, one social action institute (Indian Social Institute (ISI), Demography department in Kerala University and ree NGOs working in e areas of heal, HIV prevention, tribal welfare and social development. Apart from is, e students were given an opportunity to actively participate in e National Conference on Demographic Dividend and Fertility Transitions held at Chennai, which had many scientific sessions and deliberations on demographic issues. Besides participating in is conference, e students had interaction wi a large number of demographers and social scientists who attended e national conference. Dr. T.V. RETIREMENT Prof. Kamla Gupta, Head of Department of Migration and Urban Studies retired from e services of e Institute on 31st March 2010 on superannuation. Prof. Kamla Gupta joined IIPS in 1979 as a Lecturer. She became Reader in 1988 and Professor in 2000 and was heading e Department of Migration and Urban Studies since en. Besides teaching, she was also involved in research. Her research has focused on a variety of topics including migration, urbanization, ageing, gender and heal. 8 HOMAGE appointed as a Professor. She retired from IIPS as Professor and Head, Department of Population Policies and Programme on October 1988. She was considered as a best teacher in IIPS. She was also involved in research and guided students for eir doctoral research. Her book "Principles of Population Studies" (Co-auored wi Prof. Tara Kanitkar) is well acclaimed by all demographers and students. The first edition of is book was published in 1978 by Himalaya Publication House. Recently, in 2010, e 20 edition of is book was published. Dr. Asha A. Bhende Dr. Asha Atmaram Bhende passed away on 28 May 2010 at e age of 82. She had an excellent academic career. She had ree Master degrees - one from e University of Bombay (1956), one from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (1958), and one from e University of California, Berkely (1962). In 1976 she received Doctorate in Sociology from e Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. She joined IIPS in 1963 as Sr. Heal Educator and served e institute in various capacities. In 1973 she was Besides being an academician, Prof. Asha Bhende, was a well acclaimed actor and model too. Despite a demanding career in academics, she continued her passion in acting and came to be recognized as a multi faceted actress. She received e award for e best actress by e Government of Maharashtra in 1964-65. She has modeled for many commercials. Her modeling for e recent commercial advertisements such as State Bank of India Life Insurance (which won an award in 2007) and Asian Paints Tractor Emulsions (January, 2009) are wor mentioning. On her 80 birday, she released a book she had written on her life, titled Majhya Jagaat Me (In my own world, am I). Prof. Asha Bhende led a very productive and fruitful life all rough her life.
