Design Times MiraCosta Design Department Newsletter Featuring: New Associate Faculty Members Chinese Lunar New Year Alumni Update Travel Abroad Design Club Spring 2016

New Associate Faculty Members in the Department Thanh Du Tony Trousset DESN 203 SolidWorks Associate faculty member Thanh Du grew up in San Diego and attended Palomar College and Cuyamaca College. He holds a BSME from SDSU and an M.Sc. Eng from UCLA. Mr. Du has worked for power supply and technology companies in San Diego, has 10 years experience in the semiconductor industry, and has been a SolidWorks user since 2004. He enjoys camping, tinkering with electronics, programming, running, and riding his tractor. Mr. Du lives with his wife and 2 kids in Fallbrook. DESN 201 - Advanced AutoCAD Associate faculty member Tony Trousset is an Oceanside High School alum, and graduated from MiraCosta College in 1967. After earning his BA in Industrial Arts at San Diego State University, he started working for the Vista Unified School District in 1971. Tony trained in the earliest versions of VersaCAD in the late 80s, and started teaching AutoCAD to his high school students in 1990. He began teaching at Palomar College in 1995, in addition to his day job at Vista High School. In 2010, he was asked to develop a mechanical drafting and design program at Rancho Buena Vista High School where he taught Revit, Solid Works, Mechanical Drawing, and AutoCAD. Upon retiring from the Vista Unified School District in 2015, Tony fulfilled his lifelong dream to return to his alma mater to teach Advanced AutoCAD. Tony has six children and four grandchildren. On any given day, he can be found on the beaches of Oceanside and Carlsbad where he has been surfing for over 50 years. He also loves working in his garage, and coaching his youngest children in basketball.

Chinese Lunar New Year In celebration of the Chinese New Year, the Library and Chinese Club created a public exhibition in the Oceanside Campus library. The Journey to the West exhibition explores several facets of the Lunar New Year. The theme for the exhibition comes from the novel, Journey to the West, one of four classical novels of Chinese literature. There are eight exhibits, two of which the Design Department collaborated on. The Moon Gate and Screens were designed and built by the DESN 100 Class and Professor David Parker. The Silk Road Artifacts were created and designed by the DESN 204 Class and Professors Chris Boehm and Paul Clarke.

Paul Robbins Alumni Update This edition s alumni spotlight focuses on Paul Robbins. Paul is a United States Marine Corps Veteran and graduated from the MiraCosta College Design Program in the Spring 2014 semester. Upon graduation, he worked as a draftsperson in the solar industry. Paul is currently working as a Architectural Designer with Groupo Pacific. While in the Design Program Paul modeled the Pantheon in AutoDesk AutoCAD for his Design 201 coursework. His finished model was printed on the Z Corp 450 3D Printer. The base for the model was cut on the Techno CNC Router. The model is currently on display in the open CAD Lab.

Travel Abroad Last May Professor Parker and several students traveled to France, experiencing the architecture, history, and culture of the region. This June, Prof. Parker will be leading a ten day tour to Rome, Sorrento, Delphi, Athens, with an optional extension cruise to the Greek Isles. Attendees will walk through the Parthenon and the Colosseum just as Emporer Titus did...and will wonder how these architectural monuments could have been any more breathtaking in his time! Shimmering marble and cracking stone in both master pieces serve as marked reminders of the pinnacle of ancient world conquering powers. The tour is facilitated by Education First College Study Tours; however, you do not have to be a student to attend. Everyone is welcome! For more information visit the tour website or speak with Professor Parker Group Leader: David Parker Website: www.efcst.com/1693598bv Departure Date: 6/1/2016 Return Date: 6/13/2016

Design Club Update Making Cool Stuff; It s What We Do! The Design Club allows for students from all related disciplines to grow and learn in a small community setting. Their goals and projects aim to equip students with the experience and oversight of the engineering, architecture, and design fields with hands-on interaction, design/build opportunities, and guidance from faculty and peers. The Design Club invites ambitious and creative innovators to join. The Design Club meets Mondays at 2:30pm in the Open CAD Lab, OC 4532. Please join us! Also, if you have questions or if you d like to get on the email distribution list, please contact: designclubmc@gmail.com Design Challenge Consider the challenge! Competitions will be held this semester for students to demonstrate their design skills. Themes for these events will be chosen by consensus. The first theme the club will be focusing on is 3-D Puzzles. Stay tuned to the Facebook Page and emails on specific details as they become available. The Chariot Build The Chariot design is still being worked out and build schedules are to be planned. Come to club meetings to stay up to date on build information as schedules and plans are made throughout the semester.
