We're Rolling New Workshop Helps Job Seekers Get Work Ready On June 29, OhioMeansJobs Stark and Tuscarawas County offered Get Work Ready, a workshop designed to help job seekers identify the skills employers find most valuable and the skills needed to keep a job. In Stark County, facilitators Shannon McClay and Eve Fontes (l to r) engaged the attendees in discussion on what it means to be work ready.
Page 3 On Thursday, May 30, 2018, young adults enrolled locally in the Comprehensive Case Management & Employment Program (CCMEP) had the opportunity to attend a Youth Information Fair hosted at the Ken Weber Community Campus at Goodwill. The Youth Information Fair, developed and coordinated by a group of youth vendor and community volunteers, offered engaging workshops that attendees could select to attend, an informational resource fair, as well as lunch. Featured workshops included: Youth Information Fair a Success Shoot for a Job Land a Career where attendees learned strategies to help get and keep the job AND position themselves for a career. The workshop was facilitated by Jobs For Ohio s Graduates (JOG) staff members. The Only Person Stopping You is YOU workshop was facilitated by Shawn Crable, former professional football player and current Early Childhood Resource Center staff member who talked about resiliency, motivation and how to take advantage of opportunities available to attendees. Stop and Play is a workshop designed to share information on how to choose a quality daycare provider and why a childcare center can be helpful to a child s development. Lori Van Koughnet ( Job & Family Services) and Adelaide Reichert (RN and Health Educator for U. S. Healthworks) facilitated this session while also sharing information on drug use, both prescribed and non-prescribed, and its impact on health, wellness, and employment. Balling On A Budget featured United Way Financial Prosperity Center staff (LaFlovia Ginanni) and Canton Municipal Court staff (Denise Fishel) sharing helpful tips and advice about the dos/don ts of buying a used car and also what is needed to get a driver s license reinstated. Know Your Rights! workshop was facilitated by John Petit and Heather Duncan of Community Legal Aid Services and shared information on an individual s rights as a tenant, parent without custody of their child, and citizen who may have a criminal record. #BuildYourBrand workshop was facilitated by Laurie Moline, Isaiah Smith and Serena Draper from the United Way Get Connected Program and focused on helping attendees learn what is a person s social brand and how to impact and develop it for a positive purpose. Local community resource providers including THRIVE, Fatherhood Coalition, Stark Library Young Mom s Club, Crisis Intervention and Recovery Center, and United Way s Financial Prosperity Center provided information to young adults during the lunch and information fair portion of the day. Sessions were well attended and attendees and volunteers indicated the event was well received and the topics relevant.
OhioMeansJobs Offers Training Opportunity OhioMeansJobs will provide a free training opportunity to partner staff working with the Stark and Tuscarawas Counties centers. Carole Vesely, Consultation, Education, and Prevention Manager, from the Crisis Intervention and Recovery Center will present, Assisting Challenging Customers/Clients: How to Manage the Relationship for Positive Outcomes, on Friday, July 20th. The training will look at the types of challenging behaviors and causes/reasons for those behaviors. It will help attendees learn successful ways to respond to these behaviors and focus on self-care during and after an interaction. During her 19 years with the Crisis Center, Carole has worked closely with schools to provide consultation and training about suicide prevention and crisis recovery after a traumatic event for both students and staff. She leads the county-wide school counselor crisis recovery team that responds when school staff need support/assistance after a traumatic incident. Carole also has provided both training and consultation to community organizations about behavioral health issues. She has been a Crisis Counselor at the Crisis Center for the past 28 years. Carole has both a Master of Arts Degree from Walsh University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Kent State University. She has been a Licensed Social Worker in Ohio for more than 30 years. Two sessions will be offered, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Those interested in attending should email Melody Fuller at mfuller@omjwork.com. Get It From...The Source Update - Recycling The new recycling bin set at the west end of the 30th Street Centre parking lot has been in place for close to a full quarter, and has already received enough recyclable material to raise almost $100.00 for TES the Season, the OhioMeansJobs customer gift card program. Please continue to bring your paper/newspapers/magazines/junk mail/phone books/flattened cardboard to the bin to be recycled.
