Most technical rescue courses and classes such as Fire Apparatus Engineer, EMT-B and Unified Command are also endorsed by NFA. This means the courses have been reviewed by the NFA, and students receive a dual IFSI/NFA certificate. Volunteer fire officers are eligible to attend certain NFA six-day classes in Emmitsburg, Maryland, under the Volunteer Incentive Program. There is no charge for VIP courses. IFSI LIBRARY The IFSI Library, which is part of the state library system, provides you and your department access to training aids and information. Check the IFSI and Library web sites for details. EMS CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEUs) Many IFSI courses are eligible for EMS CEUs. Per Section 515.590 (2) (A), 77 ILL. Adm. Code 515, states: One hundred twenty hours of continuing education, seminars and workshops, addressing both adult and pediatric care. The System shall define in the Program Plan the number of continuing education hours to be accrued each year for relicensure. No more than 25 percent of those hours may be in the same subject. See the IFSI web site or call for details. PROPANE (LP) FIRE TRAINING The Illinois Propane Education and Research Council (IPERC) provides funding for IFSI to deliver live propane (LP) fire training to fire departments locally at no cost to them. COLLEGE CREDIT Students who are seeking college credit from courses completed at IFSI can request supporting documentation and course objectives for submission to their college of choice. Many courses taken prior to 2008 were recognized by the American Council of Education (ACE). HOMELAND SECURITY TRAINING IFSI is active in delivering homeland security training and conducting workshops to help communities better plan and prepare for major emergencies. Much of this training is available at no cost to the departments. This training is generally interagency, and includes other first responders and government officials. PRO BOARD Several IFSI courses have been accredited by the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board). These courses allow the student to apply for certification from the Pro Board upon successful completion of all IFSI course requirements and prerequisites. Current approved courses include: Fire Inspector I and II, based upon the 2009 edition of NFPA 1031 Fire Instructor I and II, based upon the 2007 edition of NFPA 1041 Fire Officer I and II, based upon the 2003 edition of NFPA 1021 Fire Apparatus Operator Pumper, based upon the 2009 edition of NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Operator Mobile Water Supply Apparatus, based upon the 2009 edition of NFPA 1002 For additional information, please contact Assistant Director Brian Brauer via email at brbrauer@fsi.illinois.edu. An interactive state map enables you to click on your county to see what classes are available near you. IFSI also offers online registration for Fire College and many other classes. www.fsi.illinois.edu COMPACT DISCS / DVDS Thanks to funding from the Illinois Firefighter s Association, IFSI has produced and distributed free to every Illinois fire department, a series of Down & Dirty training CDs on Fire Fighting Skills, Engine & Pump Operations and Rural Water & Tender Operations. That distribution continued in the Fall of 2008 the first training package in a DVD format: Fireground Support & Aerial Operations. This will be followed by a program on Fire Attack. FIRE COLLEGE The IFSI Fire College, which began in 1925, is the oldest continuous fire school in the nation. Scheduled for June 3-6, 2010, this four-day event brings together more than 1,000 students and instructors from around the country. It provides both hands-on and classroom sessions for career and volunteer firefighters and officers. WINTER FIRE SCHOOL Our two-day Winter Fire School, held January 23-24, 2010, provides a menu of classroom sessions. We encourage you to attend these activities.
