They also brought in 2 big boxes of canned food donations for the Jasper SHARE pantry; all in all, a good start to a new 4-H year. Participation fees remain the same for 2013-14, $20 if you register by Oct. 31, and then $25 from November 1 on. Registration must be done online, and you may not remember what email you used a year ago. If you forgot your email address or password, DO NOT create another profile in 4-H Connect. photography! Texas 4-H Photography Rules for 2014 contest are now available online at: http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/photography_contest. This year s theme is What s Your Why? Capture photos of why you are in 4-H photos of friends, projects, community service... Texas State Preservation Photography Contest for 4-H and FFA Showcase Texas Agriculture in a photo and your name and photo might be selected for display for a year in the Texas State Capitol Agriculture Museum starting in January 2014. Deadline for submission is Oct. 15; read more at texas4-h.tamu.edu; for rules and guidelines, go to the Texas 4-H photography website. East Texas Photography Club PHOTO CONTEST Adult and Junior Division rules are available from our office of the Jasper Chamber of Commerce in Milam St. For Juniors, rules are: Limit of 5 photos per contestant Must not be smaller than 8x8 nor larger than 8x12 Must be matted 11x14, black or white only, no oval or decorative mats allowed, no frames allowed Photos will be judged in two age divisions, 4 to 12 and 13-17. A $2 entry fee is required for each photo. Juniors also have the option of entering in the adult division if they prefer, but adult entry fee is $3 per photo. You may enter any subject, any photo that has not previously won an award in this contest. 13-17 year olds also have the option to enter in adult categories, judged by subject, and the entry fee is $3 per photo. Deadline for all photos is 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. Photos will be on exhibit for Butterfly Festival/Fall Fest, Oct. 5. 5th annual One Day 4-H! Events of Interest for parents or grandparents Chances are, someone you know has diabetes, and could benefit from these classes. PASS THE WORD, PLEASE! and Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes..is an educational program for people or family members with type 2 diabetes. This primary goal is to help participants learn how to manage their blood glucose in the ranges recommended by the American Diabetes Association. Cooking Well with Diabetes..is an educational program to help not only the person with diabetes, but also anyone who prepares food for those with diabetes. These lessons could also help anyone interested in preparing food with less fat, sugar, cholesterol and sodium. There will be hands-on cooking demonstrations as well as discussion of research findings on diabetes. Buna classes: Do Well, Be Well classes are Thursday mornings, Sept. 26 Oct. 31, 9 to 11 am at the Buna Fire Hall. Cooking Well classes are Nov. 7 and 14, same time and place. Do you know why (or if?) you need to supplement what you feed your cattle? Compare hay and forage samples. Please relay this information so that on the day of entry no one is turned away. Plan to stay for the duration (only a couple hours). We will also announce this on the website, Facebook page, and in newsletters from now until tag-in. No excuses for not having a properly filled out form but we all know there will be those who don t come to meetings or read the newsletter Please help me in getting the word to all our families so that all kids get to show the project that most will have already paid for and fed for many weeks. Chadd Caperton EAST TEXAS SHOW STAR SERIES OCT. 19-20, 2013 The East Texas Show Star series provides educational opportunities for 4-H and FFA members to learn and practice their skills in the arena. The main purpose is to teach the basic principles of livestock management as they relate to facility maintenance, selection, nutrition, animal health, handling, showmanship & transportation of beef, swine, sheep & goats. Participants must attend the Saturday clinic to participate in the Sunday Prospect Show. Entries are due by Friday, Oct. 11, entry blank on the next page, one entry per exhibitor. This is your chance to give your child the experience in the ring that can make all the difference in the major shows coming up.
