COLLEGE 2015 NIGHT HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR Community High School North Building Fieldhouse Oct. 19, 2015

WELCOME TO H-F! Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School is a three-time Blue Ribbon Awardwinning school that was named an International Baccalaureate World School in 2013. The district serves the villages of Homewood and Flossmoor, and portions of Chicago Heights, Glenwood, Hazel Crest and Olympia Fields. A tradition of excellence is the cornerstone of H-F the result of commitment on the part of district residents to the idea of a community high school with high standards for students and staff, and a solid goal of excellence in education. The student body just like the H-F community itself is diverse, an attribute, along with quality education, that parents repeatedly cite for moving into the district. Homewood and Flossmoor, where generations of the same family often live within blocks of one another, create a sense of heritage and community that reflects in the high school being a center of public pride. VISION STATEMENT Let here prevail the greatest expectations in academics, civil responsibility, and personal growth within a diverse community. MISSION STATEMENT The quality of each student's life improves through the educational experience athomewood-flossmoor Community High School. The institution upholds the highest standards of intellectual growth, and ethical, aesthetic, occupational, emotional, social, and physical development in an expanding global society. With belief in the fundamental worth and dignity of all individuals and recognition of diversity of backgrounds, abilities, interests, and aspirations, individuals will learn to respect the rights of others.

C O L L E G E N I G H T T I P S Before the Fair Do a computerized college search on Naviance to develop a list of schools based on your academic and personal needs. The Naviance link can be found on the H-F website: hfhighschool.org. Registration codes or log-in / username information can be obtained from Guidance Office. Review the list of colleges/universities in attendance at College Night on H-F website. Think about the following characteristics when developing your list: o 2-year vs. 4-year o Programs of study offered o Distance from home o Athletic/Extracurricular activities o Size o Internship or co-op opportunities o Urban vs. rural location o Faculty advising and support services o Diversity o Financial Fit DURING the Fair If you need help or are feeling overwhelmed, visit a H-F Counselor table for assistance. Don t limit yourself to just the colleges about which you already know of or heard of. Be independent. Don t follow a friend around who has different interests / goals that might be different than yours. Fill out information card at the tables of colleges for which you d like to be on the mailing list. Time Saver / Helpful Hint: Prepare self-stick labels with your name, address, e-mail, phone, high school, year of graduation & intended major(s). These labels will save you from writing same info over and over. Think of specific questions you want answered, including: o What are the admission requirements? o What are your most popular majors? o What are the application deadlines? o How can I arrange a campus visit? o What is the estimated cost of attendance? o What scholarship opportunities exist? o What is the average class size? o Are classes taught by professors or T.A.s? o What student support services are offered? o What type of housing is available? o Is student housing guaranteed for four years? o Fraternities? Sororities? Other interest groups? o What is campus life like on the weekend? o Do you offer intramurals, clubs, sports? o What is your school best known for? o What are some of your alumni doing now? o Do you have study-abroad programs? o How many freshmen return the next year? o What internship opportunities are available? o By when must I choose a major? o What differentiates your school from all others? o What is the library / computer lab facility like? o How many incoming freshmen are accepted? o What % of your students graduate in 4 years? o What % of students live on campus? o What is the meal service like? AFTER the Fair Follow up in writing / e-mails with questions you still need answered. Write thank you notes/e-mails to any college representative who was especially helpful to you. Discuss with your family and counselor your thoughts, ideas and plans. Do further research if necessary on colleges you met with at College Night, visit their websites, attend those individual college rep visits here at H-F or visit their campus.

We provide a pre-test, study booklet, and tiered set of courses to deliver instruction to students specifically designed for their current level. The cost of the program is a small fraction of the $3,000-$5,000 that some test prep companies charge, with comparable results. Our average increase in score as a result of this class is between 2-4 ACT points. We schedule the sessions to coordinate with the ACT test administration dates in October, December, April and June. New to H-F is an online version of Viking Test Prep. The course is free and taught be the same faculty members who teach the onsite course. Viking Test Prep Online provides a great refresher course for students who have taken the onsite version, while giving busy students the opportunity to participate in test preparation. Q: Why is Test Prep Important? A: A student's ACT score is perhaps the single most important number college admissions offices consider as they make their decision. It can be the deciding factor in whether or not a student is accepted to the college of their choice. Equally important, the higher the student's ACT score, the greater the amount of financial aid many schools will extend. Q: How Does Viking Test Prep Work? A: The cost is $150 and includes a pre-test, 600-page study guide and 20 hours of instruction over a five-week period. Our program is taught by content specialists from Homewood- Flossmoor High School. We use the pre-test results to create tiers of classes. Students receive instruction at the level appropriate for them. There are two sessions each week for five weeks. Each week students receive one hour of instruction in each of the ACT subject-area tests (English, Reading, Math and Science). Q: What are the Typical Results? A: Viking Test Prep has proven results. After completing the program, students gain an average of two to three points on their ACT exam score. Q: How do I sign up? 1. Decide which ACT you plan to take. 2. Register for the test at actstudent.org. 3. Download the Test Prep form. 4. Bring completed form and $150 to the Campus Store located in the South Cafeteria. Registration forms are also available at the Campus Store.
