Lafayette Facilities LAFAYETTE FACILITIES 2 Allan P. Kirby Sports Center Dedicated on June 2, 2000, the $35 million Allan P. Kirby Sports Center gives Lafayette the finest athletic complex of any college of its size in the country. It includes a new, 110,000-square-foot intramural and recreational sports facility attached to the previously existing Kirby Field House. The field house itself has received a $2.5 million facelift and interior renovations. The new portion of the center, featuring a distinctive atrium overlooking Fisher Field, includes the Kamine Gymnasium, which includes three 50-by-84-foot courts for basketball and other sports and an elevated 1/10-mile jogging track. The Buck Courts include six courts for racquet sports, two for squash and four that can be configured for squash or racquetball. A 6,600-square-foot fitness center and weight room includes a full strengthtraining circuit, spacious free-weight area, and more than 30 cardiovascular machines. There is also a 35-foot climbing wall, an aerobics area and several offices. Built in 1973, the original field house, which contains Ruef Natatorium, is home to several varsity sports teams. It has been enhanced to include a new sports medicine area and a new equipment room and renovated locker rooms and administrative offices. The lobby and Athletic Hall of Fame exhibitry have been completely modernized. Major support for the sports center was provided by the F.M. Kirby Foundation, which made a $32.5 million gift to Lafayette, the largest gift ever received by a college, university or other non-profit organization in the Lehigh Valley. The $32.5 million contribution, which Lafayette has received in full, includes $26.25 million for the sports complex and an additional $6.25 million in support of other objectives in the Lafayette Leadership Campaign. The total cost of the Allan P. Kirby Sports Center is $35 million. This includes $26.5 million in construction and renovation costs and $8.5 million in endowment for operation and maintenance of the facility. Approximately 75 percent of Lafayette students participate in varsity, junior varsity, club, intramural or other recreational sports. The intramural program includes some three dozen sports. There are 15 club sports. The Kirby Foundation is the family foundation of the Fred Morgan Kirby family, which has been prominent in the life of Lafayette for nearly a century. Seven family members are alumni, four have served as trustees and three received honorary doctorates from Lafayette. Northampton Country Club The Lafayette College golf team practices and plays all of its home matches at Northampton Country Club (NCC), located in Palmer Township, Pa. A challenging 6,542-yard course, Northampton Country Club was chartered in 1899, and holds the distinction of being one of the oldest private country clubs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Spanning 190 acres, the fairways are comprised of rye grass, while the challenging greens are a composite bent grass. The site of several local section championships and tournament qualifiers, Northampton Country Club has been the home of the Lafayette golf team since 1963. Included for player convenience is a spacious club house with modernized locker rooms, showers, club storage and repair. Northampton Country Club also features a first-class pro shop, stocked with the finest golf apparel and equipment. Practice facilities include range, short range and putting greens. Coaching Staff Jim Hutnik 78 Head Coach Jim Hutnik was named Lafayette s head golf coach in August of 2002. Hutnik resigned as Bethlehem Catholic High School s golf coach, but remains head coach of the high school s men s basketball squad. In his nine years at Bethlehem Catholic, Hutnik guided the golf team to two East Penn League Championships, while earning Coach of the Year honors in 1999. Bethlehem Catholic finished the 2001 season with a 16-3 record. As head coach of the basketball team, Hutnik has compiled a career record of 201-88 including 11 consecutive winning seasons. He led his team to five appearances in the district championship, winning the title three times. Hutnik was voted Coach of the Year four times and was nominated for Pennsylvania s Coach of the Year in 1998. Prior to his stint at Bethlehem Catholic, Hutnik coached the Allentown College men s basketball squad, where he tallied an 88-70 career mark over six seasons. SEASON PREVIEW Season Preview After the completion of one of the most successful fall seasons in Lafayette golf history, the 2003-04 Leopard squad is looking forward to the spring championship season and a chance to display its talent on the golf course. Lafayette head coach Jim Hutnik, in his second year at the helm of the program, is looking for the team to continue on its upswing from the fall season, carrying momentum into the spring. We were third at Hofstra and placed second and third in other tournaments, Hutnik said. We want to continue to build on that and are looking for another couple players to step up. Four of the eight-member squad averaged under 80 for the fall season, led by junior Jeremiah O Neil, who averaged a 75.5. Sophomore Mike Aarts finished the fall with a 76.6 average, while freshman Paul Burke became an impact player from his arrival on College Hill, averaging 77.0 in his first season. Senior Brad Rock rounds out the top four, ending his final fall season as a Leopard with a 79.0 average. As the team embarks on its spring season, Hutnik will look to these four to help pace the team, but is expecting the remaining members of the team to improve on their fall seasons. Senior Derek Downing is expected to make important contributions to the team through experience and leadership, while junior Garrett Copp will add depth to the Lafayette lineup. Freshmen Dave Rahal and Billy Simmermacher will be looking to gain experience for the Leopards in their first spring season on College Hill. The team will open its season with a spring break trip to the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla. on March 26-28. This trip will give us an opportunity to hone our swings and play a few matches with some other Northern teams that will be down there at the same time, Hutnik said. After returning to College Hill, the Leopards will travel to Maryland for two tournaments at Swan Point Golf Club. The first, hosted by George Washington, will be held Golf Quick Facts Head Coach Jim Hutnik (Lafayette 78) Record at Lafayette / Seasons: 2nd Season Career Seasons: 7th Season Golf Office Phone: 610-330-5417 Coach Kinney s e-mail: hutnikj@lafayette.edu College Website: www.lafayette.edu Home Course Northampton Country Club on March 26-28. After taking on Monmouth at the Diamond Country Club in West Long Branch, N.J. on April 15, the Leopards will visit the Saucon Valley Country Club on April 20 for Lehigh s quad match. At Saucon Valley s Weyhill Course, Lafayette will take on three teams from the Lehigh Valley, Moravian and Muhlenberg. The Patriot League PATRIOT LEAGUE In its second decade of academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League continues to focus on its founding principles. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education. Patriot League scholar-athletes are academically representative of their class. Those high standards are widely recognized on the national level. The origins of Patriot League excellence date back to 1986 with the inception of a successful Division I-AA football conference. In 1990, the Patriot League expanded to an all-sports conference, featuring 22 championship sports. Full League members include American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Associate members include Fairfield (field hockey), Fordham (football), Georgetown (football), Hobart (men s lacrosse), Towson (football) and Villanova (women s lacrosse). These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country. League members annually rank among the top Division I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. Every full-member institution ranked among the Top 20 nationally in each of the last two years. The Patriot League also ranked first among all Division I conferences in student-athlete graduation rates for the fourthstraight year and second in overall student graduation rates. Twenty student-athletes representing seven institutions have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Leading the Nation In the latest NCAA Graduation Rate Report of student-athletes, the Patriot League ranked first in overall student-athlete Graduation Rate. The Patriot League boasts a conference-leading 84.8 percent student-athlete graduation rate, and an overall student body graduation rate of 86 percent which ranked second overall to the Ivy League. The top five student-athlete graduation rates, by conference follow based on the last NCAA graduation rate report: Conference Percent 1 Patriot League 84.8 2 MAAC 73.2 3 Atlantic 10 72.7 4 Big East 70.3 5 West Coast 69.5 Patriot League studentathletes have also earned two Fulbright Scholarships, a Luce Foundation Scholarship, a Marshall Scholarship, two NACDA/ Disney Scholarships and three National Football Foundation Scholarships among their many accomplishments. Excellence has not been confined to the classroom. Among the many achievements on the field are: Three Patriot League men s soccer teams were awarded bids to the 2002 NCAA Tournament, the highest total in Patriot League history. For the fourth time in the last five years, the Patriot League football champion upset a higher-seeded team in the opening round and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Eight Patriot League basketball teams have competed in NCAA, NIT or pre-season NIT tournaments in the last three seasons. Opening-round victories in the NCAA baseball and softball tournaments, as well as individual All-America recognition in track & field, lacrosse, field hockey and football, are now regular occurrences for Patriot League teams and student-athletes. Individual achievement is continually recognized as the League averages approximately a dozen Academic All-Americans each year. American s Karla Kucerkova was named the 2002 Verizon Volleyball Academic All-American of the Year, becoming the first Patriot League student-athlete to be named Academic All-American of the Year in any sport. Excellence flourishes in the Patriot League, providing true meaning to The Patriot League Today s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow s Leaders. 8
