Informational Item December 12, 2017 PRELIMINARY FALL 2017 ENROLLMENTS IN ILLINOIS HIGHER EDUCATION This report summarizes preliminary fall-term 2017 headcount and full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollments at colleges and universities in Illinois. It also includes enrollments in remedial/developmental courses for Academic Year 2016-2017. Fall-term enrollments provide a snapshot of Illinois higher education enrollments on the 10th day, or census date, of the fall term. Preliminary Fall 2016 Enrollments By Sector Including enrollments at out-of-state institutions authorized to operate in Illinois, fall 2017 preliminary headcount enrollments at 197 degree-granting institutions total 764,502 (see Table 4 for institutional level data). Fall 2017 full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollments total 569,870. Enrollments by sector are shown below in Table 1. Table 1 Preliminary Fall 2017 Enrollments By Sector Undergraduate Graduate Sector Headcount FTE Headcount FTE Public Universities 136,209 124,772 48,504 41,417 Community Colleges 293,533 170,293 Independent NFP Institutions 129,407 124,911 84,236 64,947 Independent For-Profit Institutions 46,844 29,878 15,764 7,387 Out-of-State Institutions 7,018 4,465 2,987 1,800 Grand Total 613,011 454,319 151,491 115,551 Total Remedial/Developmental Students Table 2 summarizes the unduplicated headcount of undergraduate students enrolled in at least one remedial/developmental course during a 12-month period (Academic Year 2016-2017). Many students simultaneously enroll in college-level coursework and one or more remedial/developmental courses and are included in this data. Remedial/development course enrollment data disaggregated by institution are presented in Table 5. 487

These differences are based only on those institutions that responded to the survey both years, so the changes reflected here are actual changes in enrollment patterns and not due to changes in response rates to the survey from one year to the next. Undergraduate enrollment declined in all sectors while graduate enrollment declined at public universities and out-of-state institutions, but increased within the independent NFP and for-profit sectors. Table 6 contains the information disaggregated to the institutional-level.
