Dear Potential Staff Member: Thank you for your interest in employment with Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center. SWVA 4-H Center sits on 78 acres in Abingdon, Virginia, and has offered Junior 4-H Summer Camp for more than 50 years. We stress the 4-H philosophy of "Learn-By-Doing" in all 4-H Center programs, which means participants learn by becoming actively involved in an activity. SWVA 4-H Center is a large facility that serves approximately 2,000 youth each summer. What do we expect from our summer program staff members? SWVA 4-H Center summer program staff is preferably 18 years of age and has completed at least one year of college and/or has work/volunteer experience in 4-H, camp, teaching, and/or youth programming (previous experience in 4-H is not required). Regardless of your previous work and/or volunteer experience, successful employment at the 4-H Center requires certain personal attributes, including, but not limited to: Positive Attitude Friendliness/Open Mindedness Enthusiasm Patience Creativity Interest in teaching and learning Flexibility Integrity We believe that 4-H Center programs and services give us the opportunity to positively impact our community. Summer Program Staff Specialized Activities: See the listing below for available specialties, brief descriptions and their requirements. Specialized training and/or certification will be provided. Program Staff Coordinator Assist the Program Director with the implementation of the camp program. Direct supervision and coordination of summer program staff and assist with other camp duties as assigned. In the absence of the Program Director, act as liaison between the Camp Director and staff, coordinate and facilitate camp programs and activities, serve as leader and role model for all staff and camp participants. At least 2 years camp experience preferred. Camp Nurse Responsible for medicine distribution and leading health care services to camp participants following Virginia 4-H Camp Medical Orders. Responsible for maintaining first aid supplies, organizing camp health records and med rep clinic, and assist with other camp duties when possible. Candidate must be licensed as an LPN, RN, EMT, or NP. Animal Care Responsible for teaching the Animal Care with lead line program. Responsible for maintenance and care of the farm animals, equipment, safety of the participants, and program area. Experience in lead line. May assist with overall delivery of the camp program. Experience preferred. Archery Responsible for teaching safety, basic archery skills, maintenance and care of equipment. May assist with overall delivery of the camp program. Previous experience/training preferred. Camp Multimedia/Technology Responsible for teaching in specific program area. Responsible for the maintenance and care of 4-H Center multimedia and technology equipment (camera, ipad kits, computers, etc.). Responsible for the each week s camp photos, video, and possible social media posts/blogs. May assist with the overall delivery of the camp program. Experience preferred. Challenge Course (Low Ropes) Responsible in conducting Low Ropes course elements, along with team building initiatives. Responsible for safety, planning, and care of the equipment and elements. May assist with overall delivery of the camp program. Some experience with ropes desired but not required. This position may also be trained in High Ropes. Horticulture This position works seasonally on the grounds at the SWVA 4-H Center. May assist with overall delivery of the camp program. Interest and/or experience preferred. Kitchen Support Responsible for supporting the kitchen staff in food preparation, meal serving, dishes, and other duties as assigned. May assist with the overall delivery of the camp program. Interest and/or experience preferred. Lifeguard Requires certification. Responsible for lifeguard duties during camp swimming activities and with occasional weekend groups. May assist with overall delivery of the camp program. Experience preferred. Leather Craft/Maker/Painting Responsible for teaching in specific program area, maintenance and care of equipment, and other class duties. Camp Director s choose which of these three classes to offer, so flexibility, & organization skills are important for this position. May assist with overall delivery of the camp program. Experience preferred. Maintenance Support Responsible for supporting the maintenance staff in care and upkeep of the SWVA 4-H Center grounds, facilities, and other duties as assigned. May assist with the overall delivery of the camp program. Interest and/or experience preferred. Music or Dance Responsible and the ability to teaching an introductory class on either of four instruments; banjo, fiddle, guitar, or ukulele. Including to skill level/interest, class may be customized. For Dance, responsible for teaching an introductory class on a variety of dance types and movements. Including to skill level/interest, class may be customized. May assist with overall delivery of the camp program. Experience preferred. Rifle Responsible for teaching safety, basic shooting skills using BB, pellet, and.22 caliber rifles, maintenance and care of equipment. May assist with overall delivery of the camp program. Previous experience/training preferred. Swimming & Head Lifeguard Responsible for teaching swimming classes. Responsible for supervising lifeguard staff and basic maintenance/care of the pool area (including bathrooms). May assist with overall delivery of the camp program. Prefer WSI certification and current lifeguard certification. Wilderness Camping Program Responsible for supervision, instructing, and overall coordination of this specific program. Outdoor platform camping supervising campers is required for this position. Responsible for teaching on various environmental and natural science topics, outdoor living skills, camping skills, etc. Maintenance and care of equipment, overall supervision, and other duties as assigned. May assist with overall delivery of the camp program. True outdoor enthusiast and experience preferred. 3

We encourage 100% participation; however we realize that prior commitments may, from time to time, require us to work with you regarding scheduling.
