The Murray Ridge Courier On May 4, Murray Ridge School held its annual Prom. This year's theme was Mardi Gras! Prom was attended by almost 250 people, there to celebrate the graduating seniors in this year's class. Five young men and three young women were crowned kings and queens. Staff spent weeks after school decorating the gymnasium for the big event, and attendees were astonished to see the transformation; Louisiana style Mardi Gras decorations filled the gym; and students and families were treated to party masks, Mardi Gras feather boas, and tons of other décor that turned the gym into a magical New Orleans getaway! A delicious catered dinner was provided to all attendees. Additionally, a professional photographer Mardi Gras at the Murray Ridge School Prom May 2018 REMINDER: Tuesday, May 8 is Election Day! was on-hand to take photos to mark the occasion, and a DJ provided music and entertainment! These professionals donated their services to the school, and all funds for the Prom were raised through donations, and by staff through bake sales, t-shirt sales, and various raffles and dining events held throughout the school year. Thank you to all who helped make this year s Prom a huge success! Above, MRS student Christian Martin and teacher Ryanne Gelp pose in their Mardi Gras gear! Exceptional Service at Murray Ridge Center Annual Spaghetti Dinner a Huge Success! On April 28, the Murray Ridge Support Group (MRSG) held its annual Spaghetti Dinner at the AmVets Post 55 in Sheffield Lake. The Murray Ridge Support Group is a not for profit organization that exists to support the mission of Murray Ridge Center and local residents with developmental disabilities and their families. In total, the MRSG raised more than $4,000 through the event, and all proceeds will benefit Lorain County citizens impacted by developmental disabilities. Thank you to the AmVets for their continued generosity towards the MRSG by once again providing the venue and the food for this event! And thank you to all who came out for great food, great company, and a worthy cause! On April 24, the Lorain County Board of DD honored Russell Moye (left, with Board Member Dan White), with the Exceptional Service Award for the first quarter of 2018. Russ is an Adult Program Instructor with the Supported Employment Department; and basketball, soccer, and softball coach for the Murray Ridge Raiders Special Olympics. In his nomination letter, submitted by parent of Elyria Opportunity/Vocational Center attendee Daniel Montgomery, it was stated that Russ is a great man, coach, and friend. He is an asset to the Murray Ridge faculty. His guys respect and love the coach and man that he is. Thank you Russ, for your exceptional service! And congratulations on receiving this prestigious award. If you are interested in nominating a Murray Ridge employee for an Exceptional Service Award, contact Jenn Judkins at 440-329-3734 or jjudkins@murrayridgecenter.org. BOARD ROOM BRIEFING The Lorain County Board of DD convened at 6:30 p.m. on April 30, 2018: Superintendent Fisher provided an overview of 2017 agency spending, as compared to the 2017 budget and 2016 spending. Dr. Fisher also updated the Board on the sale of two properties that were previously used as Board-operated group homes. Director of Business, Greg Westgate, reviewed the 2019 Tax Budget, and it was approved by the Board. The Board unanimously approved Agency calendars for 2018/2019. There was discussion about Board member training, and the strategic planning process to occur this fall; financial projections and waiting list management will be important topics. Dr. Fisher updated the Board on the campaign for Issue 5, a renewal levy that will appear on the May 8 ballot; this levy brings in one third of the agency s funding, and will not increase taxes.
