RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT GRANT SUBMISSIONS PENDING November 1- November 30, 2017 GRANT Name of Project: NSF AISL CScape: Informal Learning of Computer Science Principles through Escape Room Design Project Description Accountable Administrators: Falecia Williams and Stacey Johnson Project Directors: Dave Brunick Campus Department: College Wide Funding Category: Federal Funding Source: Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) Date Application Submitted: 11/4/2017 DESCRIPTION Valencia College (VC) in partnership with Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ), the Orlando Science Center, and the Museum of Science and History propose, CScape: Informal Learning of Computer Science Principles through Escape Room Design (CScape), a Pilots and Feasibility Studies project. CScape will explore the impact of informal STEM learning within science centers, youth-serving nonprofits, and precollege out-of-class program contexts. The project will generate knowledge on the effects of an Escape Room model connecting Computer Science (CS) theories and principals with young learners through interactive simulations in a hands-on informal learning environment. Escape Rooms are immersive games in which participants are locked into a room and required to solve a series of puzzles in a specified amount of time in order to escape or exit the simulation. The project supports Escape Room prototype model design and piloting, activities related to early awareness and exposure to CS concepts and careers, and development of replicable curricula.
