The causes? The generosity of some really faithful philanthropists, the creativity of the county s large and diverse nonprofit sector, and the energy of our talented staff and trustees. Against the economic tide, the Foundation continues to grow. It s been a year of change and expansion. ECCF s economic impact now exceeds $2 million each year in grants and services to hundreds of local nonprofits in the county s 34 towns and cities. ECCF has no debt. Its budget is balanced. Its investment performance is well above the national benchmarks for foundations. At age eleven, ECCF remains small in the amount of assets under management and large in its grant awards, special programs and services. As I write this letter part-way into Fiscal 2010, that ratio is beginning to earn new financial leverage that will prove that the founders service first strategy is right. ECCF is a cause, a service and a civic improvement organization worth investing in. The return-on-investment will warm your heart by helping to feed people, expand the arts, improve education, save land, make us all safer, provide jobs, and make beautiful Essex County an even better place to live. ECCF at a Glance... The mission of Essex County Community Foundation is to connect people, ideas and resources for the common good. We manage donor funds When a donor sets up a fund at ECCF, we manage all the administrative functions and pool investments for maximum returns. Donor families can then focus on the best part, awarding grants or scholarships. In addition, donors can learn more about local causes by tapping into ECCF s wealth of knowledge about nonprofits in our region. We support nonprofit organizations ECCF provides extensive services to support and strengthen the county s 2500 nonprofits. Each year hundreds of local organizations receive counsel on strategic planning, board development, marketing and fundraising. We award 100 s of grants to nonprofit organizations each year through our donor and collaborative funds. We catalyze collaborative initiatives ECCF brings together individuals and nonprofits to create special programs when needs in the community call for collective action. Some of our current initiatives are: the Youth at Risk Conference, The Essex County Forum, the Back Office Services project, The Arts Forum and The Hunger Relief Project. In addition many of our funds are collaborative and have a powerful impact on the community such as the Greater Lawrence Summer Fund, The Women s Fund, the Hardscrabble Fund, and the F1rst Jobs Fund, to name a few... 2009 annual report www.eccf.org 3

ECCF Donor Funds New Funds Dr. Thomas Pesola Memorial Scholarship Fund Dr. Thomas Pesola was an accomplished, self made man. His story is one of the American dream and an inspiration to all who knew him. From extremely humble beginnings and overcoming the limitations and prejudices of a lifetime as a diabetic, Tom graduated from Northeastern University and Georgetown University Dental School to become a well loved dentist in Peabody, Danvers and Revere. When his life was cut short at age 59 this past February from a heart attack due to diabetes, his family wanted to create a scholarship to honor his ability to overcome adversity and his appreciation for education. Dr. Pesola s daughter, Kirsten McEchren, selected ECCF as the home for their scholarship. In August the family held its first Auction to raise money for the scholarships. Through ECCF, the Pesolas had the 501(c) (3) tax status they needed for their fundraiser as well as for the scholarship program. The family will be part of a larger committee responsible for selecting the scholarship recipients and will continue to fundraise for the cause. The remainder of the work including all administrative and tax responsibilities will be provided by ECCF. Dr. Pesola overcame many barriers in his life to become a successful, contributing member of the Essex County community. We are honored to help his family help others to fulfill their dreams. To learn more about the Dr. Pesola Memorial Scholarship Fund, please visit, www.drpesolascholarship.org The Mayor s Emergency Fund for Lawrence On September 18, 2009, Mayor Michael Sullivan joined with the Charles G. Pringle Foundation to establish a fund at the Essex County Community Foundation to provide rapid response to urgent needs during times of emergency. Lawrence, Massachusetts has a long and proud history as a city of immigrants. It has also had a history as a city of disasters beginning with a fire that destroyed the Pemberton Mill in 1860. As recently as June 2006, Lawrence experienced a devastating flood that hit Eastern Massachusetts and particularly the Merrimack Valley. In January 2007, a raging fire left 20 families homeless. Each time the city has pulled together to help victims rebuild their lives. With each disaster comes confusion over the most efficient and effective way to collect and distribute funds to those most affected by the disaster. The fund was launched with donations from several local foundations. ECCF will provide a single source for accepting donations and dispersing funds to those agencies that can best help those affected by a civil disaster. New Initiatives Helping to Feed the Hungry in Essex County The Essex County Hunger Relief Project As the severity of the economic crisis became apparent in late 2008, the ECCF Board of Trustees met to explore a special response to help those most affected in the County. They challenged the staff to support local food pantries and soup kitchens to ensure that no one went hungry in Essex County. Since early 2009 we have been meeting with directors of hunger organizations to learn their needs and to define a set of goals through this collaboration. Two projects emerged: Development of a county wide hunger website to strengthen the area food networks that already exist and provide a central place for emergency food information. Assistance with the U.S. Letter Carriers May 2009 annual food drive. The Letter Carriers Union Food Drive Every year in early May the U.S. Letter Carriers Union sponsors a nationwide food drive. Residents from participating towns put bags of food out by their mail box and the postal workers pick them up and deliver them to area distribution sites for sorting and picking up by local food pantries. Last spring the local branch of the Letter Carriers Union approached ECCF about providing bags for them to deliver to residents a few days before the drive. These bags would remind people to put out food on the day of the drive and have proved very successful when in other parts of the country. Having recently launched the Essex County Hunger Relief Project with support from the Nordstrom Company and The Women s Fund of Essex County, this seemed like an ideal first project. ECCF joined with Project Bread to produce 250,000 plastic bags for the Food Drive. In participating communities, red and white bags were delivered to residents and resulted in a dramatic increase in donations. In Gloucester, where the delivery of bags was coordinated with newspaper coverage, there was an 80% increase over last year in the amount of food donated! Next year, The U.S. Letter Carrier s Food Drive will take place on Saturday, May 8th, 2010. The Website In early October 2009, we launched the Essex County Hunger Relief website! This website is designed so that people can locate local food pantries and soup kitchens, clients can find food programs that serve their town, volunteers can find where to serve, donors can learn what is needed most and the food organizations themselves can use the private forum to post resources and discuss ideas. 2009 annual report www.eccf.org 5

GRANT-MAKING HIGHLIGHTS A Fortunate Community Gives Back ECCF Nurtures a Young Nonprofit The Community Giving Tree Leslie Levenson would cringe when she saw the many useful items placed on curbside during garbage collection days in Boxford, MA. There were cribs and baby swings and outgrown bikes and baby toys. She knew that there were families in near-by towns and cities that needed these items, but couldn t afford the price tags. Then Leslie came up with an idea to connect the two. What if she and other volunteers could collect toys, baby supplies, school supplies and gently used coats and be able to find families that could use them. With this vision in mind and a $1,500 start-up grant from ECCF, the Community Giving Tree was launched in 2002. Working through annual community drives to collect items and social workers to distribute goods the organization now serves 3,000 needy families each year. The guidance and financial support received from ECCF has been vital to our growth and ability to impact the lives of families in need. - Leslie Levenson After five years of growth and service the Community Giving Tree was ready to expand. Leslie came back to ECCF for advice on transitioning from an all volunteer organization to a paid staff with a Board of Directors and a fundraising program. ECCF helped them connect with local foundations that support valuable grassroots efforts like theirs. In 2009 they then turned to ECCF for a Discretionary Fund Grant to help them with a capacity building project. Leslie recognized that she needed to strengthen the ability of her organization to perform its work more effectively. Their $3,000 grant from ECCF supported Board and staff training and funded an on-line marketing tool and fundraising software. Combined, these items are helping the Community Giving Tree to improve governance and fundraising for the organization. For more information on The Community Giving Tree, please visit www.communitygivingtree.org The Community Giving Tree is currently tackling a capital campaign to build a new facility. Their goal is to serve 5,000 families a year, but that can only happen with more space. ECCF s Discretionary Grant, by helping to build their organizational capacity, will support this effort and provide the skills and tools to sustain their organization in years to come. 10 Essex county community foundation

Hosting Essex County s first Institute for Trustees, a full day workshop in governance and compliance, strategic and succession planning, recruitment and fundraising- open to all nonprofit trustees past, present and futurewill be held on Saturday March 27th, 2010. Receiving National Accreditation by the tough standards of the Council on Foundations. Electing more Trustees from across the county to add to our superb pool of talent, initiative and impact. Hosting board meetings throughout the County to meet with donors, grantees, and community leaders. Convening more nonprofits in peer groups to share best practices, improve sustainability and expand services throughout the county. Establishing ECCF s largest gift ever, a real game-changer.
