Romano lakelife2015@twc.com and the kids had their own stuff. Those are the generations who have joined local squadrons and have grown the USPS into the largest U.S. Boating Club. Now, 40 years later, those members are aging out, selling their boats and retiring. Education Officer P/C Russ Klein, SN russklein45@charter.net Treasurer Lt/C Roger M. Jim Barbara, AP barbarajeb@aol.com LNSPS on the internet: http://www.usps.org/ localusps/lakenorman/ How Do We Draw Younger Members? That is the heading of an article written by Ken Elkins printed in this month s PILOT Magazine. The information was gathered from interviews with Pat Hakanson, District EXO, Bill Beers, Commander of Catawba Sail & Power Squadron and myself, Commander of Lake Norman Sail & Power Squadron. Pat Hakanson stated, speaking about millennials, They like spur of the moment things and families are No 1. She said, My father had his bowling league and Kiwanis, Bill Beers believes that the average age of the 76 member Catawba Squadron is in the early 60 s. I stated, "At this point in time, it s a very difficult task to generate interest of joining our organization by young families and millennials. Young parents are so active in their kids sports, ballet, PTA meetings and other activities. Bill Beers agrees; he added they may like paddle boarding or jet skiing, but they don t want to own a boat. I said, "They also don t like meetings, socializing over joining a boat club, or planning civic activities. I said that I believe the young boaters are missing out on some of the best educational opportunities that
Inland Seafarer 3 July, 2018 Edition they miss by not becoming members of our Boating Club. I mentioned that the U.S. Coast Guard just came out with numbers that show 77% of deaths on the water in Yes, 77 2017 were by boaters that never had a single hour of boating education or training. I mentioned that we are focusing on the new program called Jump Start. As an example, a young family member buys a boat, with little or no boating experience, our Squadron's qualified members will take the person out for two hours on their boat and give them some basic training such as leaving the dock, docking, anchoring and other basic skills. We hope that this opens an excellent opportunity to talk about the value of membership. I mentioned the opportunity of our Vessel Safety Check program that we have; an opportunity to have one-on-one conversations to talk not only about their boat, but such things like educational courses that just make a better, safer boater. There are photos of the Charlotte boat show and conversation of the value of getting boaters' interest in taking our basic ABC Safe Boating Course. I encourage every member to pick up a copy of the Pilot and read the article that Ken Elkins wrote for the June / July edition. Ken Elkins is secretary of Charlotte Power Squadron and a senior writer of Charlotte Business Journal. Executive Officer P/C Steve Stuart AP Boating Safety Day on Lake Norman June 23 rd, 2018 Thanks to Alex Cooper, Alan Savage, Kat Savage and Dick Todd for your efforts in taking part in Safety Day on Lake Norman. I think this first effort to combine Coast Guard Auxiliary, multiple County Police Departments and Squadrons together is a good effort to work as "one team" to help educate the boating public about what basic safety equipment is needed on their watercraft. When organizations offer VSC and Police Departments are offering if needed life jackets, throwable safety cushions and replacement fire extinguishers, it shows they are now taking a proactive part in the "solution" by helping to provide boaters with needed safety items on board. One of the major goals of these organizations is to help provide a safe boating environment and an enjoyable experience for all boating families. BOATING CONFIDENCE ZONE A Major Focus of America s Boating Club Why Vessel Safety Checks (VSC) are so important for safety on Lake Norman. There are over 13 million registered, recreational boaters in the United States and over 45,000 on Lake Norman. Less than 1% are checked each year. Becoming a VSC examiner as a new member is a good step toward meeting new friends, takes only about three hours of volunteer service and helps you stay on top of your own knowledge and boating safety. Give the Captain behind the wheel and passengers a sense of comfort knowing any one of these safety pieces of equipment on their boat may make a difference in boating accidents or even Life Safety.
