History of UTPA The institution that has become known as The University of Texas-Pan American was founded as a two-year college by the Edinburg School District in 1927. It joined the state system of four-year Colleges and Universities in 1965 as Pan American College, and was named Pan American to reflect its desire to bridge the cultures of North and South American. The University changed its name to Pan American University when the first graduate degree was offered in 1971 then became The University of Texas-Pan American upon the merger with the UT System in 1989. UTPA Facts - UTPA is the 10 th largest University in the State of Texas, and fifth largest in the UT System. - UTPA is ranked second in the nation in the number of bachelor s degrees and fifth in the number of master s degrees awarded to Hispanics. - The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education ranks UTPA as one of the top 100 best U.S. College and Universities for Hispanics. - UTPA has the only Physician Assistant Studies Program in the State of Texas outside a medical school NCAA Division I Certification The University of Texas-Pan American earned NCAA Division I status in 1970 in all men s sports while women's athletics earned NCAA Division I status in 1985. In August of 2004, the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification announced that The University of Texas- Pan American was one of 18 NCAA Division I institutions that have undergone the Association s second cycle of athletics certification. The designation of certified means that The University of Texas-Pan American operates its athletics program in a substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by - Sixty percent of UTPA students who apply to medical schools are accepted compared to the state average of 36 percent. - Ninety-five percent of the students in the UTPA Law School Preparation Institute who have applied to law school have been accepted to at least one. - UTPA is second only to UT Austin in the acceptance of Advanced Placement Credit from entering students compared to other Universities in the UT System. Commercial Flights The Rio Grande Valley provides three airports located in McAllen, Harlingen-Brownsville and Brownsville-South Padre Island, which includes 33 daily commercial flights. The McAllen International Airport host to four airlines, including American, Continental, Delta and Allegiant and makes ten daily flights directly to airports in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Las Vegas and Mexico City. The Harlingen Valley International Airport services three airlines from Continental, Southwest and Sun Country and makes 18 daily flights to Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Minneapolis-St. Paul. The Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport is serviced by Continental, which makes five daily flights. Within one stop at airports located in Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston - all of those flights depart to 250 cities across the United States of America.
