Based n yur interpretatin f the assessment results, describe the areas f strength in student achievement f this learning utcme. The additin f the Chest Tube Drainage System quiz served t evaluate students' learning frm the Atrium nline training mdules and in-lab discussin. Prir t Fall 2014, students simply cmpleted nline chest tube drainage system training mdules and submitted a certificate f cmpletin as prf f skill cmpetency. 8. Based n yur analysis f student perfrmance, discuss the areas in which student achievement f this learning utcme culd be imprved. If student met standard f success, yu may wish t identify yur plans fr cntinuus imprvement. The single quiz given fr NUR 124 primarily fcused n the theretical cncepts assciated with chest tube drainage systems. Only tw (2) grups ut f the 8 assessed met the benchmark f passing the quiz n the first attempt. Chest tube drainage systems was determined t be a higher-level nursing skill that mst likely was prematurely given during Med-Surg I. It was determined during a jint Medical-Surgical Nursing faculty meeting in Winter 2016 that this skills wuld be mved t Med-Surg III t crrespnd with the thery discussin f heart & lung surgeries. Additinally, lab faculty evaluated 4 f the 5 skills (exceptin: SASH). These faculty members are nt the same faculty wh prvide the instructin - this remved instructr bias. Since 4 f the 5 advanced nursing lab skills are evaluated n a "by-appintment" basis, students are able t determine their level f practice time, utilizing

supervised lab practice as needed prir t their self-selected appintment time. This fllws the scheduled lab time during the curse. 8. Based n yur analysis f student perfrmance, discuss the areas in which student achievement f this learning utcme culd be imprved. If student met standard f success, yu may wish t identify yur plans fr cntinuus imprvement. Althugh, the benchmark was met with all advanced nursing lab skills, there will be cntent shifts amng the three (3) medical-surgical nursing thery curses fr the Fall 2016 semester. It was determined that it made mre sense t align lab skills t the thery curse t imprve students' understanding f the theretical cncepts and principles behind the skills. The fllwing advanced nursing skills will be mved t Med-Surg II and III: Chest tube drainage systems Trachestmy suctining and care Central venus catheter dressing changes/care Based n changes in the preceding clinical curse (i.e. NUR 106 Fundamentals f Nursing - Lab/Clinical Practice), the fllwing skills will be added in the next MSF revisin as these were remved frm NUR 106: IV therapy - all skills assciated with set-up f primary and secndary; will retain mnitring/truble-shting, IV infusin pumps. Sterile dressing changes - Fundamentals will evaluate clean dressing changes, as this is what students will see in their clinical sites. Fcused assessments - t build n head-t-te assessments taught in NUR 106 and fcusing n the specific needs f the acutely ill adult. Outcme 3: Prvide safe nursing care f ne (1) mderately cmplex patient in the acute care setting, using the nursing prcess in each f the cre cmpetencies. It was pinted ut in ur department's meeting with an external curriculum cnsultant, that clinical paperwrk shuld nt be s extensive that excessive time is spent with its cmpletin. NUR 124 faculty will be reevaluating weekly written assignments fr clinical. Cntinued effrt will be spent t ensure that all students in NUR 124 have cmparable expsure t mderately cmplex patients and cnsistent medicatin administratin (IVs and injectins). II. 1. Describe yur verall impressin f hw this curse is meeting the needs f students. Did the assessment prcess bring t light anything abut student achievement f learning utcmes that surprised yu? While students cmpleted advanced nursing skills effectively, their underlying knwledge f cncepts related t the skills may be lacking due t their level f cmplexity. Students shw a great deal f learning and integratin f prir knwledge during the curse f this nursing sequence; hwever, it is still a huge leap frm the previus curse sequence, NUR 102/106 Fundamentals f Nursing.
