YOUR FUTURE OUR VISION Graduate Development Programme Civil Engineering Quantity Surveying
Anja Reid Anja joined Eurovia (formerly Ringway) in January 2004 after graduating from the Universities of Nottingham Trent and Dresden with a double degree in civil engineering. I achieved my goal of becoming a Chartered Engineer after working with Ringway for 4 years. The considerable amount of training both on and off the job, as well as the broad spectrum of experience and high level of responsibility that Ringway gave me, helped me to achieve this goal. Since then I have been working on a number of interesting and varied projects and my career has progressed to the position of Senior Site Agent. After gaining highway maintenance and construction experience in both rural and urban environments, Anja completed a secondment with Jacobs where she gained valuable design experience. Following a period in our commercial department, she became an Incorporated Engineer in 2006 before being appointed site agent on a 2 million construction project in Kent. Upon completion of our Graduate Development Programme, Anja took up a post as a Contracts Manager for Ringway within London and became a Chartered Engineer in May 2008. Following a period with the company s Airport Services Division, Anja joined Ringway North East early in 2010 as Senior Engineer for a major bridge refurbishment project that included the installation of cathodic protection. She has since been working as a Senior Site Agent for various highway projects in the north of England, including the A57 Worksop Road - Sheffield Road improvement valued at approximately 10 million. 2 3

Jonathan Priestley My one-year placement with Eurovia Contracting s commercial department has seen me undertake a varied range of activities. Based on a 10 million project located on the outskirts of Sheffield, the role not only involved office based work, but also provided the opportunity to be on site performing measures and learning first-hand about the various construction methods used by the company for its civil engineering projects throughout the UK. Jonathan spent his Industrial Placement year with Eurovia as a quantity surveyor on the A57 Todwick Road Junction Improvement Scheme. The project, valued at 10 million, was procured through the Midlands Highway Alliance Framework Contract. Working for the Project QS, Jonathan was exposed to all the commercial aspects of a scheme of this type, which has given him a solid foundation for his future career. The work he undertook included: drafting sub-contracts using NEC3 form of contract, raising Early Warnings, drafting Compensation Events and managing the distribution of sub-contract invoices for the whole Division. He became experienced in using SAP (the company s computerised financial package), compiling valuations, producing costs to completion and cash-flow forecasts, and liaising with the Client. During the placement, Jonathan took advantage of the company s approved training programme and started working towards becoming professionally qualified with the RICS. Following his successful placement Jonathan was sponsored for his final year at university and accepted a permanent position with the company on graduation. 6 7

Michael Wright Michael joined Eurovia (formerly Ringway) through the University of Nottingham s scholarship scheme in 2005 and gained valuable experience during summer placements with the company. His first summer placement was working as an engineer on the construction of an innovative 2.3m bridge construction in Rotherham; the following summer placement was spent working on a 2m dual-carriageway reconstruction project. I was accepted onto the company s scholarship scheme during my second year of study and gained significant experience working on large scale construction projects during my summer placements. When I graduated, I had no hesitation in accepting an offer of permanent employment. One of the key benefits of Eurovia s structured training scheme is the variety of work with a high degree of responsibility that is given to graduates. Eurovia has also invested in my future and shown long term commitment by sponsoring me through a PhD. After graduating with a Master s degree in civil engineering, Michael joined the company s technical consultancy Jean Lefebvre (UK). During this period he undertook a number of pavement design projects including the 10m Airport and NEC Integrated Transport Access in Birmingham. Michael also undertook research and development projects for the Ringway Group and was sponsored by the company to undertake a unique materials related PhD with the University of Nottingham. Upon completion of our Graduate Development Programme, Michael was appointed Technical Manager responsible for managing the Jean Lefebvre technical centre in Warrington. Michael also acted as a pavement advisor to Vinci-Ringway for the Isle of Wight and London Borough of Hounslow PFI tenders. Michael became an Incorporated Engineer with the ICE in May 2012 and, following the successful award of the PFI contracts in 2013, was appointed Senior Pavement Engineer to provide consultancy advice in the areas of pavement design and asset management. Michael was awarded his PhD degree in June 2013. 10 11

Tom Smith After graduating from Nottingham Trent University in July 2012 with a degree in Quantity Surveying, Tom joined Eurovia s commercial team for the company s Hounslow Highways PFI contract which commenced in January 2013. Initially engaged with the mobilisation team for sub-contract procurement, he gained valuable experience of NEC3 Term Services contracts and commercial negotiations. I joined Eurovia in July 2012, excited by the opportunity that I was given to be involved in such a high profile contract as the Hounslow PFI. Being on the contract from the very beginning allowed me to get involved in a variety of tasks through the mobilisation and into the commencement of the contract, gaining valuable experience. My main aim is to complete my RICS APC and develop further within Eurovia through the company s Graduate Development Programme, with the assistance of colleagues at Hounslow Highways. Following the start of the new contract, Tom managed sub-contract accounts for Core Investment Period (CIP) works and those for other schemes outside of the CIP, as well as undertaking project financial control and reporting. He was also heavily involved in the development and implementation of a new Microsoft SharePoint based Risk Management tool held on the company s intranet and used across all business units, including running training sessions across the various divisions. Tom is currently working towards his APC for the RICS with a training programme put in place as part of Eurovia s graduate training scheme and aims to become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor by 2015. 14 15
