Structural Empowerment COMMITMENT TO PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SE5 - Nursing education opportunities are provided for those interested in a nursing career. Provide one example, with supporting evidence, of a career development opportunity provided by the organization for non-nurse employees or members of the community interested in becoming a nurse. This example may include community partnership activities. Career Development Opportunity Advocate BroMenn Medical Center is excited to work in partnership with the Bloomington Area Career Center (BACC) to provide high school students with internships and career development opportunities through the Advanced Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program (Exhibit SE5.1 Business Affiliation Agreement, Exhibit A). Participating students are from sixteen different high schools in Central Illinois and have expressed an interest in the nursing profession as a future career (Exhibit SE5.2 Bloomington Area Career Center pamphlet). Community Members Interested in Nursing High school students who are considering a nursing career have the opportunity to participate in the Advanced CNA program. Students are introduced to the program through their local high school. Once accepted into the BACC program, students complete the Nurse Assistant class, a pre-requisite for the Advanced CNA class. Upon successful completion of the Nurse Assistant course, students obtain the State Certification for Certified Nurse s Assistant (CNA). Only students earning their CNA certificate and who show strong clinical skills, grades, leadership and initiative are eligible for the Advanced CNA program (Exhibit SE5.3 Advanced CNA Information Sheet & Application). In addition, students must also interview and receive positive recommendations from their BACC instructors. The Advanced CNA course provides students with internship opportunities to enhance their technical skill development and further introduce them to the nursing and health care environment (Exhibit SE5.4 Bloomington Area Career Center website). Advocate BroMenn Medical Center s Role Since 2006, ABMC has provided high school students with valuable learning experiences to prepare them for future careers in nursing. Students observe and/or have hands-on experiences while working directly with registered nurses and nursing technicians. Hands-on experiences include basic patient care activities such as vital signs, height/weight, transferring patients, dressing and feeding patients, bathing, and basic aseptic procedures (Exhibit SE5.1 Business Affiliation Agreement, Exhibit A). Students are mentored as nursing assistants on the Surgical Unit, Progressive Care Unit, Mother Baby Unit and Emergency Department. In addition to working on the unit for 90 minutes four days a week, students also spend one day a week in the classroom at BACC. The combination of work and classroom experience offers high school students the opportunity to apply newly acquired knowledge. Students gain valuable patient care experiences while continuing to develop relationships with health care professionals. According to the BACC End of Year Report for 2014-2015, 82% of Students in the Nursing Assisting Programs went on to pursue Post-Secondary education in the area of study (Exhibit SE5.5 Bloomington Area Career Center End-of- Year Report 2014-2015). Stephanie S. is one of the students who actively participated in the BACC program at ABMC as a high school student. She went on to study nursing in college, and as a junior participated in the 10 week Summer Student Intern program at ABMC. In December 2014, Stephanie graduated from Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Exhibit SE5.3 Advocate BroMenn Medical Center What is Advanced CNA Program? Advanced CNA Advanced CNA is a great opportunity for a selected group of students to gain experience in a healthcare field of interest. Since these students are Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA), they (in most areas) will be able to actually care for patients in a CNA role. While at the clinical site, students will be working directly with patients in various units of hospital or doctor s offices. Some hospital units that students have worked on in the past are: the Emergency Department, Mother/Baby Unit, Oncology Unit, Intensive Care Unit, and Medical/Surgical Unit. Doctor s offices include: Pediatrics, Oncology, OB/GYN, Wound Center, and Pain Center. Please note that a BACC instructor is NOT present with students when they are at their clinical site. Students will be working under the supervision of the hospital/office staff. The BACC instructor will make routine visits at the clinical sites to evaluate student progress. It is important to note that the Advanced CNA program is a yearlong commitment (from September to May). Advanced CNA is not a program for various job shadowing opportunities. Our clinical sites invest their time to train students to work on their specific unit. We cannot have students switching clinical sites. What is expected of Advanced CNA students? Students will drive to their assigned clinical site four days a week. Please note that they must have their own transportation to and from their clinical site. Students will meet one day per week in the classroom at BACC and hand in assignments from the previous week. Assignments include but are not limited to: Daily journals, daily attendance, daily medical terms, weekly articles, weekly medication descriptions, and quarterly reports/papers. Students will be expected to participate in Career Expo (in October), Career/Health Fair, and (possibly) SkillsUSA Attendance is of upmost importance! Clinical sites rely on our students to be there. Professional behavior: Students must adhere to professional clinical attire, have excellent communication skills, and have strong initiative. They must be able to work independently and as a member of a team. How do I get into Advanced CNA? Students are selected by both theory and clinical instructors. Approximately 10 to 15 students will be selected. The following criteria is used in the selection of students: o Must be a junior in high school and currently taking Nurse Assistant

o Passes the CNA exam (taken in May) o Verbalizes a motivation and desire to advance in the healthcare field. The field of interest should be one that would enable the student to be able to participate and not just stand and watch for the entire year. For example: a student wanting to do radiology would not be a good choice because (since the student is not trained is such an area) they would only be able to watch and not have any hands-on experience. o Demonstrates a maturity level that is consistent with the ability to perform in a professional and independent role o Excellent communication skills Appropriate use of terminology, eye contact, appropriate interaction with peers, staff, and instructors o Soft skills Strong work ethic Time management skills Ability to prioritize Confident Ability to accept and learn from constructive criticism Self-motivated Responsible Reliable o Attendance must be in good standing o Academics consistency of B average or better o Participation in SkillsUSA o Has own method of transportation Seeks new learning opportunities Volunteer for clinical experience Emotional stability Able to adapt to new situations Utilizes class and clinical time wisely Attentive Please note: Students are exposed to a wide variety of experiences that for most of the time are positive, but on occasions, the student could experience: Patient death Graphic incidents Combative patients Stressful interactions Patients with infectious disease Please know that the clinical sites will do their best to protect our students as they would their own staff. Because these situations can be stressful or emotional for students, students are encouraged to talk to the instructor if in the event they are struggling with anything issues within or outside this program.

Advanced CNA Application Advanced CNA is a program for students that have completed Nurse Assisting as a junior. This program is designed for independent study and clinical experience in the nursing field. Ten to fifteen students are chosen to take this course. In order to be considered, students must meet the following criteria: A strong interest in a defined nursing field At least a B average in Nurse Assisting Excellent attendance in Nurse Assisting Passed the CNA exam on first attempt Has own transportation to get to clinical sites four days per week Excellent communication and leadership skills If the above is something that you are interested in and feel that you will meet all of the qualifications for, please fill out the information below. What will my classes be like? During class you will learn the necessary requirements it takes to obtain your Certified Nursing Assistant State Certification. You will also receive a unique opportunity to apply your class room training at a clinical site two days a week, working hands on with patients. Students will benefit from speakers within the industry, enhance their technical skill development through internships, and develop workplace skills required in the health care profession.
