Titre du stage / Internship Position Title: Pays / Country: Ville / City: Secteur prioritaire / Sector: Description du stage / Position Description: Communications and Social Marketing Intern Dominican Republic Santo Domingo Stimulating sustainable economic growth Project Description: Pilot Tourism Project A main strategy for ProActividad over the last couple of years has been to support the productive sector impacting on communitybased tourism for job creation and poverty reduction amongst disenfranchised young people living in towns with tourism potential in the Dominican Republic. In a country with a tourism-driven economy, it is important for the benefits of tourism to be enjoyed as equitably as possible among the people of the Dominican Republic. This requires increased community participation and resource management so that tourism can be developed in a more equitable and sustainable manner. The tourism initiative began as a pilot project with LGBT youth in the provinces of La Vega, Samana, La Romana, and Santo Domingo. The project has set out both to use tourism as a vehicle to achieve a degree of sustainable social and economic development for the LGBT youth residing in these localities, but also as a means of creating greater tolerance and acceptance of the LGBT community through exposure to LGBT tourists from abroad in these communities, as well as by partnering with the formal tourism sector and the Ministry of Tourism in the Dominican Republic and sensitizing them about the benefits of the LGBT tourism niche for the Dominican economy. Social Enterprise Initiatives ProActividad has set up and operated a number of social enterprises over the last 10 years or so including Mata de Mango (Mango Tree), a cultural space that operated as a lounge and juice bar, and more recently a coffee shop initiative called K de café. Both the tourism project and the social enterprise initiatives operated by ProActividad rely heavily on communications and social marketing strategies. ProActividad is looking to take on a

Host Organization Details: treatment with key populations in the Dominican Republic. Over the years COIN s work has evolved from prevention efforts addressing the behaviour of key populations as individuals, such as condom promotion and STI management towards environmentalstructural interventions that address the physical, social, and political contexts in which individual behaviour takes place. To achieve this COIN has learned to draw from the strengths of both community solidarity and government policy initiatives, and to engage community members in both program and policy development. This has involved building the capacity of numerous grass roots organisations like REDNACER a network of young people living with HIV or JALEA a youth group of LGBT youth from La Romana, so they become a local long-term resource for the community; as well as effectively engaging government in participatory dialogue and securing collaboration. As described in Horizon s brief Community Approaches and Government Policy Reduce HIV Risk in the Dominican Republic, this is something COIN has a sound track record in. The social enterprise initiative is an important strategy for COIN both because it attempts to address structural issues like unemployment, poverty, and lack of opportunities; and it generates resources that make us left dependent of donor funding. For more information on COIN and it s work please see our websites at : http://coin.org.do/ http://www.focusright.org/ ProActividad is a registered NGO working for social justice and development in the Dominican Republic, through a combination of practical interventions on the ground, sexual and reproductive health initiatives, economic and social empowerment activities, people-centred research and policy advocacy for young people on the margins of Dominican Society. ProActividad works in common cause with youth who are poor, underserved and often been denied their rights to obtain social justice, achieve their full development potential, or be part of locally rooted citizen movements.
