HEART OF THE WEST DISTRICT NEWSLETTER November, 2015 WE ARE THE KEY! Governors Ann McCarty and Riley Glascock Happy fall to all. I would like to touch on my life as a Civitan: I have only been a Civitan for ten years. I had attended several social events and even a Regional meeting in Tucson with Pam Holmes when I got the Civitan bug. I became a member of Civitans, and before I knew it I was Sgt. of Arms, then President-Elect and the next year, President. My Past-President year was served under Roger Smart as District Secretary for the HOTW. After that, Area Director for two years. Since then I have served Civitan as a board member. Six years ago under the leadership of Teresa Wakeman and Virginia McAfee, I helped develop a Disability Civitan Club; what a great experience! The Friends Civitan Club is so rewarding. I have attended eight of the last ten International conventions, and nine of the HOTW District Conventions. I still ask questions every day about what it is all about! Thank You, HOTW Civitans for the opportunity to serve you all this past year as Governor-Elect. When I said I would be Governor I knew this would be a three year commitment. When I arrived in Birmingham, Alabama to attend training I was very moved by the staff at the International Office, the week-long training from that staff, the leadership from President elect, Debbie Juhke and meeting other Governor Elects from all over the United States. The best part of the trip was the day we spent at the Civitan Research Center. After I returned home, I helped Governor Claudia Allen, Past International Director, Teresa Wakeman, build a Knitting Club (Twisted Stitchers). What a hoot; I may even learn to knit!!!!! I am the proud mother of two daughters and six grandchildren, and we are a Civitan family! My daughters, son in-law and Mother are also Civitans. My Mother, Thelma, joined the Twisted Stitchers at the grand age of 85! In April last year my oldest granddaughter, Riley Glascock, became the Junior Governor for HOTW in Tucson. What a great experience for her and for me to be able to serve the HOTW together as Governors. We both attended the Junior International Convention in Orlando, Florida and Riley attended the HOTW District Convention last August in Phoenix. Riley is working on her Junior Sno-Do goal of $2,200.00 for the Civitan Research Center. She will then be able to attend the Governor s Update in Barrie, Ontario, Canada in January. All pledges must be paid by December 20, 2015. You can go on line at www.juniorcivitan.org/donate. Be sure to enter Riley s name by clicking the link labeled, Enter Junior Civitan s name here. (Riley Glascock). She has also mailed the information to club Presidents in our district. Riley is a senior at Pocatello High School and wants to further her education in Nursing. She has been very active the past five years as a volunteer with the Friends disability Civitan club. Riley attended a Pocatello City Council meeting Continued on Page 2 District Clubs Pocatello, Idaho Civitan Car Club Civitan Club on the Greens Cresta Loma Golf & Civitan Desert Sun Yuma, Arizona Diverse City Friends Pocatello, Idaho Hearts & Hands Idaho Falls, Idaho Helena Montana Henderson Nevada Idaho Falls Idaho Las Vegas Nevada London Bridge Lake Havasu City, Arizona Lovely Ladies Metro Phoenix, Inc Arizona The Old Pueblo The Pill Schlesinger Club Phoenix Bird Arizona Roadrunner, Inc. recently with me and Junior Advisor, Teresa Wakeman to accept a Proclamation on behalf of Junior Civitan Clubs around the world for Junior Civitan Service day which was October 24, 2015. Activities for the four junior civitan clubs in our area include the fundraiser, Stone Soup, which was hosted by Civitan, volunteering at the Museum, hosting a trunk or treat and a food bank drive. Juniors are the future of Civitan. My installation as Governor at the International Convention in St. Louis was so dynamic. All of the incoming Governors got a large wooden Key with a key phrase to shout out during the extravaganza. My phrase was New Clubs. Hopefully we can build another new club; such as a Young Professional Club and more junior civitan Clubs. I was so proud to belong to the HOTW District when Chris and Don Bergen (London Bridge Club) received an International award for their service with Special Olympics, and Idaho Falls for Youth Seminar and for Civitan awareness for the Revive @ Five concert series! District Installation in Phoenix was the topper of the year when we all had the privilege of being installed to our district offices by Jay Albertia, our International President of Civitan. Jay s son, Preston served Junior Civitans as their International President this past year. What a great Civitan Family! My hat is off to Mrs.Gena Albertia for keeping these men and family on task! Pam Holmes and I also received our District honor keys in Phoenix. What an honor to share the spotlight with the lady that planted the seed for me to become a Civitan! My first month at my new job has been very busy. My first installation was my own Club where my granddaughter Riley helped with the installation of the new officers. Congratulations to Stephana Prokschl. You will be a great President! Then off to to install the Road Runners and Phil Schlesinger Civitan club officers. It was the 35 th Annual Awards and installation Banquet for the Phil Schlesinger Civitans. What a great group of Civitans. This year, Ian Barefoot will preside as President of the P.S. Club. My host for the weekend was Sharon Hessoun, International Director for Region Eight. She is also the President of the Road Runner Club in Tucson. Sharon shared her home and her fabric shopping habits with me and even a walk every morning with her and her dog, Ella. Carl Mangelsdorf, President of the Cresta Loma Club was the M.C. and boy does he have a closet full of great suits to sport! Thank You, Governor Elect Lyn Barefoot for the great honor of spending the evening with the P.S. Club and Roadrunners, and introducing me to the Civitan Challenge! Do you all know the Civitan Challenge? (see last page) My next adventure was flying into Phoenix with Past Governor, Claudia Allen, being picked up by Deborah Maddox from the Metro club and spending the afternoon checking out the new thrift store. The Metro Civitans have been fixing the store up for the Civitan Village group to manage. Its new name will be Flerish Design and Thrift. Deborah even had us pull some painter s tape off the chevron stripes that the Metro Club had painted. The rest of the afternoon was spent visiting the Civitan Village campers while they prepared to head to Camp Civitan for the weekend. We had a great tour of the facility, did a little dancing, checked out the kitchen where several meals are prepared for area restaurants, their art center and media service to the Phoenix area. What a great center! Oh yes, I even got to check out some Claxton Fruit Cake. The next day Debra drove us to Yuma so we could help with the charter, initiation and installation of the newest civitan club in our great District, the Desert Sun Civitan Club!! Thank You Ken and Mary Ellis, and Sharon Hessoun for your great talent and dedication to building a new club. The last report was that they had 33 members which makes them a Golden Circle Club and as a new club they will receive $500.00 from International. They were working on their first service project with a canned food drive. Congratulations, President Barbara Hengl and club. I also got to experience a date shake at the date and ice cream shop on the way to Yuma. Yummy!! The Friends and Civitans were invited to attend the Idaho Falls Hearts and Hands disability club s October meeting. Their special guest that evening was Tim from Tim s Place in Albuquerque - Service with a Smile! What a remarkable young man and he gave everyone hugs. Check him out on Google and YouTube. I also Presented Rocky Deschamp, President of the Idaho Falls Club and Dorothy Firth, President of the Hearts and Hands Civitan club their Keys so they can lead their clubs this coming year. What a great way to get four civitan clubs together for a great event. On October 16, 2015 the Friends and Civitan Clubs co-hosted a Halloween Party for people with disabilities and we included the Friend s installation and awards banquet. It was a night filled with Civitans. A float was built for the ISU homecoming parade, apple bobbing, face painting, crafts, acorn hole game and dancing. Nancy Schorzman will be leading the Friends club this next year as President.. What a way to share service with fun and business. The rest of the weekend was a joint event with Junior and Senior Civitans walking in the ISU Parade handing out candy, flyers for Stone Soup, and tail gating with each other on the campus of Idaho State University.. I have only been the governor of the HOTW a month and I have been so busy with spreading the word of WE Are the Key. I challenge all of you in the next 30 days to check out the websites, our face book pages and coming events of each club. Please send your club newsletters, your activities to me and Shayne Spude. Shayne is doing a great job on the District website!!
