President s Message Well April is here and if the first few days are any indication, we are in for a very cold spring. The warmer weather that we had hoped to see arrive over the last few weeks appears to be taking it s time getting to us! Regardless of the weather, spring is a typical time for energy industry scheduled plant maintenance & turnarounds, and we typically see industry hiring to support these activities. If you are seeking job opportunities, ensure to take advantage of AACE s Chinook-Calgary showcasing of contractor resource providers and leverage that connection to explore the opportunities. Our March Technical Dinner meeting was a huge success as we hosted Roua Chahin, Project Controls Lead Green Line Project, City of Calgary as our Key Note Speaker. The Green Line LRT is the largest public infrastructure investment ever made in Calgary, and the integration and complexities that come with connecting over 20 communities with shops, jobs, services, recreation centres, and cultural destinations are massive. Roua discussed with the members the critical role of Project controllers in ensuring the project is delivered successfully. It was an extremely engaging conversation, and we thank Roua for her time. Our final Technical Dinner meeting of the 2017/2018 season is scheduled for Wednesday, April 25th. We are honoured to host Rick McIver, MLA for Calgary-Hays as our Key Note Speaker. Rick will be sharing with us the story of the building of Stoney Trial (Ring Road), and the challenges and success they faced throughout the project. His first-hand account of the complexities and the role that project controls played in bringing the project through to completion will be part of this interactive discussion. Registration is sure to fill quickly, and I encourage everyone to secure their spot without delay. We have analyzed all the feedback received from our AACE What s important to you survey, and based on your input, we are super excited to host a 1 day Cost Estimating workshop on Saturday, April 28th. This workshop will be tailored for a hands on approach to cost estimating, while also helping those who plan to go on to write for their CEP designation, as we will use the material covered in the CEP exam to provide the backdrop for the workshop. As we recognize many of our members are still impacted by the economic downturn, we feel it is important to keep the pricing as low as possible to enable as many as possible to sharpen their skills - we are offering this workshop at a price point well below market value, $100/member, $125/non-member. Details with registration can be found on page 5. And finally, I would like to share the news that our very own Bindu Amin has been elected as Canada Region 1 Director. Bindu has served as a board member of our local Calgary Chinook section for several years, most recently standing as our past president. We are thrilled to have Bindu represent Canada at the International AACE board, and wish her every success! I look forward to seeing you all at the April 25 Technical Dinner meeting!
