Utah State will look to improve from its fourth place finish in the Western Athletic Conference in 2006 behind Meagan Lewis and Jessica Parenti-Otte, who each advanced to regional competition a year ago. With 12 members of last year s team returning to compete, the Aggies have an improved outlook for the 2007 season. Nine of our 15 athletes are upperclassman, head coach Ray Cornsaid. We are an experienced team. The Aggies have added three freshmen to the roster after losing four gymnasts from last year s roster, including standout Leisel Kohler. I think that the freshman coming in this year have really added a particular element, said Corn. They have raised the gymnastics level of everyone on this team. Jessica Parenti This year the Aggies return five seniors. Ashley Barr returns to competition as a fifth-year senior after redshirting last season due to injury. Meagan Lewis, Rachael Mandy and Jessica Parenti-Otte also return as fifth-year seniors. They are team members that know what it takes to take 16th in the nation, said Corn. They feel that their legacy is what they leave behind as seniors. 2007 Season Outlook Parenti-Otte is expected to lead the team for another season in the all-around competition. Last year she led the team with a personal best score of 39.275 in the all-around. She will be joined by Lewis who has a personal best 39.175 in the all-around. They will be joined by Alex Martin and Katie Omann. Megan Lewis I m going to have to be very wise in rotating the all-arounders, said Corn. I don t think they can go out every night of the week and perform. Utah State plans to be solid in the vault competition, with veterans such as Katie Omann, Mandy and Nicki Felley, who all competed well in the vault last season. The balance beam is always a place where you can see freshmen in action and they will be joined by specialist Martin, who performed well on the beam last season. Parenti-Otte, Ana Rickard and Megan Tschida are expected to be successful in the floor exercise. The Aggies look forward to stiff competition throughout the season, continuing competition against a strong conference lineup. The toughest meet will come against Utah, which finished the 2006 season ranked second in the nation. Other strong competitors will be Minnesota, which finished ranked 19th in the country, and BYU which finished 2006 ranked 30th. Utah State will also meet a distant opponent from University of Alaska-Anchorage, which was ranked 54th at the end of the 2006 season. We have lofty goals of a conference championship, said Corn. We hope to get to the regional meet and give ourselves a shot at nationals. All of the Aggies WAC competitors finished last season ranked in the top 50 in the nation. The top team was 29th-ranked San Jose State, which was two spots in front of conference champion Sacramento State, which finished 31st. Boise State followed ranked 34th while Southern Utah was 37th. Utah State ranked 42nd at the end of 2006 with Cal-State Fullerton ranking in the 48th spot. We are excited, and we are looking forward to a great year, Corn said. Ray Corn Head Coach 30th Year Northern Colorado 1971 B.A. Social Sciences Ray Corn s Career Highlights Only coach in USU Division I history Teams have qualified for the postseason 25 times in 29 years Four Big West Conference championship teams Won the 2005 Western Gymnastics Conference Championship Coached three All-Americans, three Olympians and nine NCAA national qualifiers Coached five national championship qualifying teams Ray Corn has created and maintained a tradition of success in his 29 years at Utah State, both in the gym and in the classroom. As the only coach in USU s Division I gymnastics history, he has led the Aggies to the postseason 25 times in his 29 years in Logan, including five trips to the national championships. Corn owns an overall record of 425-415-2, with a regular-season record of 372-260-2. In 1978, Corn took a club-level Utah State gymnastics team and transformed it into an AIAW power, finishing 30-4 in his first season. The next year, the Aggies made the first of four consecutive trips to the AIAW National Championships, finishing as high as ninth in 1982. In 1991, USU returned to the national championship meet, now under the supervision of the NCAA. In 20 of the past 23 years, USU has qualified for the NCAA regional competition. Utah State first participated in the Big West Conference gymnastics championships in 1992, winning the title. The Aggies have since claimed the Big West title three times in 1996, 1998 and 2001. USU then joined the Western Gymnastics Conference in 2002, winning the league title in 2005. The Aggies joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2006. Corn was named the Midwest Regional Coach of the Year in 1991, earned Big West Co-Coach of the Year honors in 1994 and was named Big West Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2001. He also earned Coach of the Year honors in the High Country Athletic Conference in 1986, 1987 and 1988. He was named WGC Coach of the Year in 2005. Corn has coached three All-Americans, three Olympians, two World Championship competitors and had nine gymnasts qualify for the NCAA National Championships. Since 1991, 32 gymnasts have earned academic All-America honors 50 times. For 29 years, Corn has taught gymnastics and professional classes in USU physical education department in addition to his coaching duties. Prior to arriving at Utah State, Corn coached at Bear Creek High School in suburban Denver from 1972-77. In five years there, his girls gymnastics team won five state titles. In 1977, the boys team swept the state championships. Corn began his coaching career at Oakley (Kan.) High School in 1971, coaching wrestling, football and boys and girls gymnastics in addition to teaching. A four-year member of the University of Northern Colorado gymnastics team, Corn originally signed to wrestle for UNC. The gymnastics team qualified for the national championships each of his four years there, finishing as high as sixth. He served as captain his senior year. Corn earned his B.A. in social sciences in 1971, with an emphasis in history and political science. A graduate of Broomfield (Colo.) High School, Corn was born Dec. 31, 1949 in Cebu City, Philippines. He is married to the former Shelly Knighton. The couple has two daughters, Amanda Rae, 16, and Christina Marie, 14. Ernestine Russell Associate Head Coach Fifth Year Michigan State 1960 B.S. Physical Ed./Dance A two-time Canadian Olympian, Ernestine Russell was the head coach at the University of Florida for 13 years and at Clarion State for 10 years prior to joining the USU staff in 2003. At UF, Russell s teams posted a 185-48 record, won one national title (1982) and made 11 consecutive National Championship appearances between 1979 and 1992. In her 23-year career as a collegiate head coach, her teams were 243-48. Florida won the final AIAW gymnastics championship in 1982, the same year Russell was named AIAW National Coach of the Year. In her time at UF, just Florida and Utah qualified for every NCAA championship between 1982, when the organization began sanctioning women s championship events, and 1992. Russell was the head coach of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, an assistant on the 1976 U.S. Olympic team, head coach of the 1978 U.S. World Championship team and participated at the 1977 and 1985 World University Games as head coach. Under Russell, UF claimed five SEC titles, and she earned SEC Coach of the Year honors in 1989 and 1992. Her student-athletes earned 35 All-American and 20 all- SEC honors. Three gymnasts earned NCAA postgraduate scholarships, while 37 were named academic all-sec. Prior to arriving at Florida, Russell was the head coach at Clarion State College for 10 years, where her teams won AIAW national titles in 1977 and 1978. A native of Windsor, Ontario, she represented Canada in the 1956 and 1960 Olympics. A 1960 graduate of Michigan State, Russell resides in Logan, Utah, and has a daughter and one grandson. The Logan native has been very active in gymnastics since the age of eight. He competed until age 12 and began coaching at age 16. He started coaching tumbling at Wasatch Gymnastics in Logan. He began as a substitute coach, then moved on to co-coach. At the age of 18, Nilson started coaching boys gymnastics and spread his focus to all events. Nilson took two years off from coaching to serve an LDS mission in Warsaw, Poland. Upon returning from his mission, Nilson and his brothers came to USU to train in exchange for cleaning the building. They then decided to start up a boys gymnastics club. Nilson helped coach the Tytans club on campus, through which he met Aggie head coach Ray Corn. Nilson is the oldest of six, having three brothers and two sisters. His parents are Clair and Jeena Nilson. He married his wife Michelle in August of 2004. Liesel Kohler Undergraduate Assistant First Year Utah State 2006 B.S. Animal Science Leisel Kohler begins her coaching career at Utah State after completing her collegiate career as an Aggie. Kohler, a native of La Selva Beach, Calif., is currently the USU individual leader for a singleseason floor exercise average with a 9.877, which she posted during the 2004 season. She also ranks second in school history with a individual season average on the balance beam of 9.802 in 2004. She is also listed on the balance beam and floor exercise single meet high score record lists, with the second highest mark in school history on the beam with a 9.925 and on the floor exercise with a 9.50. Kohler was an Academic all-conference selection all fours years as an Aggie, and was selected to the all-western Gymnastics Conference team with her strong performance on the balance beam and in the floor exercise in 2005 Kohler is the oldest of five children, with a brother and three sisters. Gymnastics Institute Political Science WGC All-Conference Beam ( 05) WGC All-Conference Bars, All- Around ( 04) WGC All-Academic ( 03, 04, 05) WGC Athlete of the Week (March 7, 2005) Academic All-American ( 03, 06) 2006 (REDSHIRT)--Ashley received academic All- America honors in 2006 with a 3.67 GPA. 2005 (JUNIOR)-- Competed in all 13 meets for the Aggies on both beam and floor, and missed only one meet on the bars. She received WGC all-conference honors on beam after finishing fifth with a 9.825. She received WGC all-academic honors for the third straight year as well as being named the WGC athlete of the week for the week of March 7. 2004 (SOPHOMORE)-- Recorded a career-best 9.925 on floor against Missouri/Boise State. Tied career-high of 9.875 on bars twice. Her 9.900 on floor against Southern Utah was good enough for a second place finish. Competed on the vault (9.700) and in the all-around (38.850) for the first time in the last meet of the season against Denver. She was honored with first team all-western Gymnastics Conference on bars and second team in all-around in 2004. 2003 (FRESH- MAN)-- Had three top-three finishes. Was one of just three USU non all-arounders to finish in the top three for the year. Career-best 9.875 on bars gave her third place against N.C. State. Tied for first on bars. CLUB/HIGH SCHOOL-- Competed as a Level 10 gymnast for Lindy Franzini, Vinici Liera and Enis Hudson at Colorado Gymnastics Institute. A 2002 Level 10 national qualifier. Took second in the all-around at the state Level 10 competition in 2002. Won the 2002 state Level 10 title on floor, finished third on vault, fifth on bars and eighth on beam. Finished second on bars and sixth in the allaround at 2002 regional competition. Was a member of the Winterfest Classic Championship team in 2002. Graduated from Cherry Creek High with a 3.7 grade point average. PERSONAL-- Graduated with a degree in political sceince in 2006 and is currently working on a master s degree. Also competed in the floor exercise at home against Southern Utah and at Minnesota, where she also competed on the beam. Finished in 14th place in the vault competition at the WAC Championships where she posted a career-high 9.750 CLUB/HIGH SCHOOL-- Competed as a Level 10 gymnast for Chris Burdette and Kim Zmeskal as a member of Texas Dreams. In addition to winning the 2004 Texas state title on floor, Felley placed second on beam at the Level 10 Regionals. At the Level 10 Nationals she placed eighth on floor and 10th on vault. At the 2005 Junior Olympic Championships she finished ninth in the all-around out of 250 participants. She placed 11th on the bars, 17th on both the beam and vault, and 19th on the floor to solidify her top-10 performance. She is one of four new freshmen. PERSONAL-- Last name is pronounced Fee-lie. Qualified for Regional s eight years in a row from 1999 to 2006, while qualifying for Nationals in 2005 and 2006. Graduated from Dakota Ridge High School with a 3.79 grade point average. Her strongest showing was against Sacramento State at home where she posted season highs on the vault (9.775), beam (9.825), floor exercise (9.800) and all-around (39.175). Placed second on the team in the bar competition against Boise State with a 9.800. Helped lead the Aggies to a tri-meet victory against Washington and Texas Woman s claiming the all-around title with a score of 38.900. Also claimed an all-around title at BYU with a score of 38.775. Competed in the WAC Championships where she tied her season high on the vault (9.775) placing ninth, while finishing 11th in the all-around. Qualified for NCAA Regionals where she placed 15th in the all-around. Had the second highest averages in the vault (9.664) and bars (9.602) competitions among Aggie all-arounders, along with the third best all-around average on the team with a 38.325. Named XBOX Live WAC Gymnast of the Week in February. Co-led the team to All-America academic honors, with a 3.93 GPA. 2005 (SOPHOMORE)--After redshirting the 2004 season due to an injury, Lewis returned to compete on bars and vault. Her season high on bars was a 9.700 against California. Set a season high on vault against Denver with a 9.800 which tied her for third on the event. She received WGC academic all-conference honors for the third straight year. 2003 (FRESHMAN)--Set USU record for 39.00-plus scores in a season with 12, breaking former Aggie Christy Denson s mark of nine. All-around scores in 12 of 14 meets were better than 39.000, including 39.500 against Boise State. 2003 average on vault (9.796, fourth), beam (9.775, third), bars (9.798, second), floor (9.805, sixth) and allaround (39.500, fourth) make her the only current Aggie with top-10 averages in all five catagories. Career high 9.950 against Boise State ties her for second all-time on floor. Meagan received first team all-around all-western Gymnastics Conference honors in 2003. CLUB/HIGH SCHOOL-- Competed as a Level 10 gymnast for Cassie Rice and Jill Enritta at GymCats Gymnastics in Las Vegas. An eight-time state champion, she has titles in the Level 10 bars, vault, floor and all-around. Owns Level 9 titles in floor, vault and all-around competitions. Took second at the 2001 state meet in the all-around. Finished 11th at Level 10 nationals as a senior. PERSONAL-- Competed as Meagan Nelson as a freshman and sophomore before marrying Corey Lewis. Her season best on the vault came at Utah and also at BYU with a 9.775. Recorded a season high on bars at Texas Woman s with a 9.775. Competed in the WAC Championships in the vault and bars competitions where she tied her season high 9.775 on the vault and tied for ninth. Co-led the team to academic All-America honors with a grade-point average of 3.93. 2005 (SOPHOMORE)--Mandy competed on the vault in every meet of 2005. She scored at least a 9.700 on vault in each meet, and tied her personal best and 18th all-time vault score against Texas Woman s and California with a 9.850. She continued to be the most solid Aggie on vault as she scored nothing lower than a 9.700 and had a season average of 9.7583, just slightly lower than her top- 10 average of last year. Mandy received WGC academic all-conference honors for the third year. 2004 (FRESH- MAN)-- Recorded a personal-best 9.850 on vault twice. Personal-best of 9.825 on bars was good for a fourth place finish against Denver. Season average on vault of 9.765 was good enough to place her seventh all-time for USU. Earned academic All-American honors. She sat out the 2003 season due to an injury. CLUB/HIGH SCHOOL- - Competed as a Level 10 gymnast for Amy Sahli and Kelli Dronen at American Gold Gymnastics in Fargo. Level 10 state champion in 1999 and 2000. Took second at state in 2001. Qualified for regional competition for seven consecutive years, once as a Level 9 gymnast and six times at Level 10. Won the 2001 regional vault championship and took second in 1999. In 2001, was the second alternate in the regional all-around and qualified for national competition once as a Level 10 gymnast. Graduated from Fargo South High School with a 3.9 grade point average. Galena High School Flips USA Undeclared 2006 (REDSHIRT)-- Redshirted her freshman season. CLUB/HIGH SCHOOL--Markle finished 18th in the all-around competition at the 2005 Junior Olympic Championships. She had a top-10 performance on the floor (10), then finished 13th on the bars, 25th on the vault, and 32nd on the beam. Received the Gymnast of the Year award from Flips USA in 2005. Markle was also the Level 10 2002 Idaho state champion in the all-around and finished sixth in the 2002 regional allaround competition, while also taking 17th in the allaround at the 2002 Level 10 Nationals. She was able to return from injury in 2004 to place second on bars at the Level 10 Regionals and was an alternate for the Junior Olympic Nationals. She was coached at Flips USA by Patty Resnick and her husband Neil, a member of the USA Olympic coaching staff. She is one of four new freshmen. PERSONAL--Undeclared major. Her season high on the vault came at Utah with a 9.700, while her season high 9.750 on the beam came against Washington and Texas Woman s. Competed in the WAC Championships where she placed third on the bars tying her season high score of 9.800, while also competing on the beam and in the floor exercise. 2005 (SOPHO- MORE)-- Martin suffered a small injury that limited her action in the first two meets. She led the Aggies on bars in the first four meets. She won the all-around title against Denver in her first time competing in the allaround in 2005 with a 38.750. Had four personal bests against Texas Woman s including a 9.900 on the beam, which ties her for 10th all-time. Also posted a 39.275 in the all-around. Had a season high 9.825 on bars at BYU. Tied her season high on floor of 9.850 against Denver/ Kentucky. After throwing her shoulder out during warmups, she toughed out three routines at the WGC Championships and took sixth place (9.725) on bars. Martin earned all-wgc on bars in 2005 and academic all-wgc honors in 2005 and 2004. 2004 (FRESHMAN)-- Recorded seven straight meets of 39.000 or better in the all-around. Won the all-around and bars versus Southern Utah and the all-around again at Brigham Young. Tied for first at California on bars. The 9.925 on bars recorded at SUU is the fifth best all-time at USU. Recorded two of the top-13 USU all-around performances. Floor (9.810) and beam (9.752) averages for the year were the fifth best averages in the respective events at USU alltime. Martin earned first team all-western Gymnastics Conference in all-around and on bars. Was named the Western Gymnastic Conference Athlete of the Week twice as well as USU Athlete of the Week once. CLUB/ HIGH SCHOOL-- Competed as a Level 10 gymnast for Crystal Tonto at Windsor Gymnastics Academy. Was Level 10 state champion in 1999 and 2002. Her finest performance came against Boise State where she won the bars, beam and floor events while claiming the all-around title. Her season high in the all-around came against Sacramento State with a 39.275, while posting her season high on the bars with a 9.850. She also claimed all-around titles at CS- Fullerton, at Texas Woman s and against Boise State. She won four beam events in meets against Washington/TWU, Sacramento State, Boise State and Southern Utah. She won the vault competition against BYU with a score of 9.800. Competed at the WAC Championships where she won the bars competition with a score of 9.875, while taking second in the vault and all-around. Competed at NCAA Regionals where she placed 14th in the all-around with a score of 38.775. Received academic All-America honors with a grade-point average of 3.59. 2005 (SOPHOMORE)-- Parenti was diagnosed with mononucleosis and didn t compete until the fourth meet of the season against Southern Utah. Against Boise State, Parenti competed in the all-around for the first time in 2005 and won it with a 39.150. She had another stellar met against Texas Woman s as she set three personal bests with three top-20 all time performances for the Aggies. She won the vault (9.900, 5th all-time) and all-around (39.350, 14th all-time) and finished third on floor (9.900, 19th). Against California she won the allaround (39.425, 6th all-time) and vault (9.950, t1st alltime) and finished second on beam with a 9.825. Had a season high 9.825 on bars at BYU and tied a season high 9.850 on beam. Parenti had six top-three finishes the next week. Her efforts helped move the team into 16th place nationally. Parenti was named Utah State s athlete of the week twice (Feb. 15 and March 22), and the WGC athlete once (Feb. 21). At the WGC Championships she took third on bars (9.800) and the all-around (39.025), earning all-conference recognition in both events. Received WGC academic all-conference honors this season. 2004 (REDSHIRT)-- Jessica received academic all- WGC honors in 2004. Her finest performance came against Southern Utah where she posted season high marks on the bars with a 9.725 and in the floor exercise with a 9.600 after competing in that event at five meets. Also competed on the balance beam at four meets with her season high coming against Boise State with a 9.750. She finished with the second highest balance beam average on the team with a 9.537. At the WAC Championships she competed in the bars, beam and floor exercise events with her highest finish coming in the floor exercise as she tied for fourth place with a score of 9.750. 2005(FRESHMAN)-- Tschida flipped into the number one all-around role when Jessica Parenti was unable to compete at the beginning of the season. Tschida responded by finishing second in the all-around in her first two meets with an all-around high score of 39.125 against Utah. She also tied for the floor title against Utah with a 9.850. She returned to the all-around for the Aggies against Boise State finishing second once again with a 38.825. Also set a season high on beam (9.775). Her 9.875 on floor tied her for first with teammate Liesel Kohler. Tied a personal best on bars (9.750) and set one on floor (9.950) against Texas Woman s. Her floor score tied her for second all-time for the Aggies. Against California set a personal record 9.800 on bars as she tied for second. Had a career best bars score at BYU with a 9.825. Was named USU s Athlete of the Week for the week of March 8. Received WGC academic all-conference honors. Named the WGC Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 10. Received all-conference honors by finishing fourth on floor with a 9.775. Had the highest floor average of all the USU gymnasts in 2005 with 9.8318. Coming off a stellar performance in 2005, the Aggies looked to continue their success in 2006. They placed fourth at the Western Athletic Conference Championships as a team, while Jessica Parenti-Otte took first place on the un-even parallel bars. Jessica Parenti-Otte and Meagan Lewis went on to compete in the regional championships to place 14th and 15th respectively. The Aggies didn t start as they had hoped, going 0-3 at their first meet. The meet consisted of two conference foes, CS-Fullerton and San Jose State, along with North Carolina State. Utah State wasn t far behind with a team all-around score of 187.925, just behind third place CS-Fullerton with a 187.975. USU went through the season without help from all-around standout Ashley Barr, who suffered a torn 2006 in Review ACL in the fall of 2005 and was unable to compete. We never seemed to be able to put our best team out on the floor, head coach Ray Corn said. We had a lot of little injuries that hurt our ability to succeed. Utah State claimed its first victory at its second meet against Texas Woman s, Centenary and LSU. The Aggies outscored TWU and Centenary with a score of 192.875, but as WGC champion in the floor exercise with a score of 9.850 at the 2005 WGC Championships. Her finest performances came against BYU where she scored a 9.750 and against TWU, Centenary and LSU where she posted her season high mark 9.800. She competed at the WAC Championships in the floor exercise, placing 13th with a score 9.700 in her only event. Jessica Parenti-Otte had the strongest showing at the WAC Championships where she placed second on the vault and in the all around, and was crowned conference champion on the uneven-parallel bars after scoring a 9.875. We did challenge at the conference meet, a meet that I personally think we could have won despite all of the injuries. Corn said. Meagan Lewis Jessica Parenti-Otte fell short of then eighth-ranked LSU which finished at 194.050. I do believe that there were athletes on the team that tried to make too much happen, Corn said. As a result it took us out of our routines. Three true freshmen saw action during the season. Brittany Price saw the most action, competing in all the meets save one with a specialty in the bars where she posted a season-best mark of 9.775. Sarah Johnson competed in all but two meets with a specialty on the balance beam with her finest performance coming against Washington and TWU with a score of 9.800. Nicki Felley also competed in seven meets, including the WAC Championships where she had her finest performance in her specialty on the vault with a score of 9.750. Liesel Kohler returned as Utah State s lone graduating senior in 2006, where she defended her title Liesel Kohler The staff and athletes have agreed that the 2006 season was relatively unsuccessful, said Corn. That was then, and this is now, and we are looking forward. 14

GYMNASTICS WALL OF FAME The Wall of Fame was dedicated in 1985 to honor past gymnasts for their accomplishments in the gym, in the classroom and for their overall contributions to the porgram. An Utah State gymnast must do one of four things to be nominated to be honored on the Wall of Fame: graduate from USU after competing for four years; qualify for the NCAA championships as an individual; earn All-America status; represent the gymnast s home nation in international competition. Head coach Ray Corn nominates gymnasts, and a committee subsequentally votes on those nominees. Lena Adomat placed 29th in the all-around as an at-large qualifier for the 1986 NCAA Championships. She was all- HCAC in 1986 and 1987. In 1986, Adomat set an Aggie vault record of 9.65. While at USU, she won the Swedish National Championships in 1985 and 1986 and competed in the 1986 World Championships. Prior to attending USU, Adomat was a member of Sweden s Olympic teams in 1980 and 1984. Michelle Bugbee set a school record with a 38.19 National Qualifying Score. She finished 40th in the all-around at the 1991 NCAA National Championships with a 37.30. Natalie Cannon is ranked among USU s top 25 individual performers on beam (9.650) and floor (9.800). Robin Conklin placed 41st at the 1987 NCAA Championships as an at-large qualifier. She tied the USU bars record with a 9.70 in 1986. Patty Delaney was the first alternate for the 1986 NCAA Championships. She was a two-time all-hcac performer and a four-time Academic all- HCAC honoree. Delaney set a USU school record on the vault with a 9.70 in 1989. Christy Denson is the current USU record holder in the all-around (39.550), bars (9.975), and floor exercise (9.975). She was a 10-time all- Big West performer, including two Big West all-around titles (1999, 2000), two bar titles (1998, 2000) and one beam title (1999). In 1998, she became the ninth gymnast in Aggie history to qualify for the NCAA Championships as an at large competitor, placing 31st. Denson was also named Big West Gymnast of the Year in her junior and senior campaigns, as well as being voted Utah State s Female Athlete of the Year in 1998, 1999 and 2000. Stephanie Green set the school record on the bars as a freshman in 1988 with a 9.75. In 1990, she posted a 9.80 on the bars, tying the school record. She earned all-hcac honors in 1990 and was a three-time academic all-hcac honoree. Haley Houtchens was a four-time academic All-American. She is tied for the ninthbest score in school history on the bars (9.80) and 14th on the floor (9.825). Lori Kreikemeier is the only Aggie gymnast to have qualified for four national championships. She competed at the AIAWs from 1979-82. Lori Loudner was a fourtime academic All-American. In 1994, she set an Aggie record of 9.850 on beam. Wanita Lynch won back-toback Australian National Championships in the all-around while at Utah State. She represented Australia in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. Lynch was the United States Junior College all-around champion for Odessa (Texas) JC in 1979 and a five-time JUCO All-American. She set Utah State records on the bars, beam, floor and all-around in 1981. In 1982, she broke each of those marks and set a new vault record. Stacy Lynn was a four-time academic All-American and was all-big West on the vault in 1993. Twice she earned academic all-big West honors. Jennifer Crawford is second on the USU vault performer list with a 9.900 mark and is one of only two Aggies to score 9.900 or better. Her season average of 9.729 on vault is the third-best mark for the Aggies. At one time, Tana Davis held 16 Aggie records. She was an at-large competitor in the 1989 and 1990 NCAA Championships, taking 26th and 31st, respectively. In 1989, she set USU records on the beam and in the all-around. As a senior, she broke the beam and all-around marks and tied the bars and floor records. Amber Jamison qualified for the 1999 NCAA Championships as the No. 4 individual all-arounder. She set an USU record at a NCAA Championships in the all-around with a 39.050, tying her for 22nd in the nation. She holds the school record on bars with a 9.975. Alicia Johnston earned AIAW All-American status as a freshman in 1978 when she tied for 12th in the all-around. She set Utah State records for the bars, beam, floor and all-around. 30th Anniversary Jodi Mabb earned AIAW All-America status as a freshman in 1978 when she tied for 12th in the all-around and in 1979 when she placed 14th. She set a Utah State record for the vault and was a threetime Region VII champion on that event. Liesel Kohler earned all- WGC honors on the beam and floor exercise in 2005. She was WGC floor exercise champion in 05 and is currently the individual leader for a single-season floor exercise average with a 9.877. She also ranks second with a individual season average of 9.802 on the balance beam in 2004. She was an academic All-American in 2006 and earned academic all-conference honors all four years as an Aggie. 23

Beth Neilson was ranked among the top 25 in the nation on bars in 1997, averaging a school-record 9.786. The final two years of her career she was all-big West on the bars, tying for the title in 1997. She scored a 9.900 four times on bars and was a three time academic All-American. Chelsea Nilsen earned All- Big West honors when she tied for first on the floor in 1996, and in 1993 when she tied for third. She was also named academic All-American. She set the USU floor season average record with a 9.745 in 1996 and also the top floor score of all time with 9.925. Summer Oveson earned academic All-American honors in 1993 and received academic All-Big West three consecutive years. She tied the school record on floor with a 9.850 in 1995 and again in 1996. Heidi Pfannenstiel tied the Utah State vault record as a freshman in 1989 with a 9.70 and again tied the mark with 9.80 in 1992. She earned All-Big West honors on the floor in 1992. She was an academic All-American in 1991 and 1992. Michelle Pohl qualified for the 1983 NCAA National Championships. She set a school record on floor exercise (9.65) that season as well as season average records on beam, floor, and the allaround. The following season, she broke her floor mark and tied the school bars record with 9.70s on each event. In 1986, Pohl again broke the Aggie floor record with a 9.70. Jessica Porter earned all-big West honors in 1996 placing second on bars at the conference meet. She recorded the 14th best all-around score in school history (39.200) and owns three of USU s top ten alltime bar season averages. Brenda Scholl tied the school vault record as a freshman in 1989 with a 9.70. She set the bars record in 1991 with a 9.85. In 1992, Scholl earned All-Big West honors on the beam. Jill Snyder transferred to Utah State from Northern Illinois where she was the 1985 Mid-American Conference bars champion Kris Stano was the last Utah State gymnast to earn All-America status, finishing fourth on the floor exercise in 1982. Janalee Page was the first native Logan gymnast to compete for the Aggies. She earned academic all-hcac honors in 1987. Deanna Palmer was the first Aggie to score 9.900 on vault. She holds the school record with a 9.950 at Michigan (1997). She earned All-Big West honors four times, three in vault and one on floor, and was second at the 1996 NCAA Regionals on vault. She was a three-time academic All- American. Shannon Passe set USU s all-around record in 1997, scoring a 39.325 at Texas Woman s. She was a threetime All-Big West performer on beam, winning individual titles in 1995 and 1996. Debbie Peterson qualified for three AIAW National Championships as an at-large competitor. Kim Richards currently ranks third with a individual season average of 9.794 on the beam in 1997. She also ranks fourth with a single-meet score of 9.925 on the beam in 1997. She was an academic all-american in 97 and 98 and was selected an academic all-big West selection in 97 and 99. Krissy Richards currently holds the school record on beam with a 9.95. She was the 1998 Big West beam champion (9.90). Richards also earned all-big West honors on beam in 1999. Rachel Ropelato is ranked sixth with a individual season average of 9.769 on the vault in 2004. She also ranks eighth wih a individual season average of 9.739 on the bars in 2004. She ranks fifth with a singleevent 9.900 on the vault in 2003 and fifth on the bars with a 9.925 in 2004. She earned all-wgc honors on the vault in 03 and on the vault and bars in 04. Julie Ryan was the first Aggie gymnast to break the 38 mark on the all-around, setting a school record with a 38.05 and tying the floor mark he wasthe 1988 HCAC floor exercise champion. In 1991, Ryan set school records for the beam (9.80) and floor (9.85). 9.70 in of1988. Emily Swank was a four-year letter winner and a four-time NACGC/W Academic All- American. Won the Big West Conference title on the uneven bars. Was the valedictorian of the College of Science in 1998. Tricia Yamamoto became the first Aggie gymnast to break the 39.000 mark in the all-around in 1995. As a senior, she qualified for the NCAA Championships as the No. 6 individual all-arounder. She finished 36th with a 38.350. In 1993, she earned All-Big West honors on the floor, and in 1995 was the Big West all-around champion, earning All-Big West honors on bars and floor. Barb Zahl was a four-time all-hcac honoree and finished 34th at the 1990 NCAA Championships. She tied the school bars (9.80) and floor exercise (9.80) records in 1990. Two years later she again tied the floor mark with a 9.85. Three times, Zahl earned academic All-HCAC honors and twice she was named academic All-American. In 1992, Zahl earned All-Big West honors on the vault, bars, floor and all-around, finishing first on the floor. She was a finalist for the 1992 NCAA Woman of the Year award. 24

Individual Honors Alicia Johnston All-Around 1978 Alicia Johnston earned AIAW All-America honors in the all-around in 1978, held in Seattle. A freshman, Johnston tied teammate Jodi Mabb for 12th place. Jodi Mabb All-Around 1978, 79 Jodi Mabb tied teammate Alicia Johnston for 12th in the all-around in 1978 at the AIAW Nationals in Seattle. In 1979 she returned to the national championships in State College, Pa., this time with the rest of the USU team. Mabb took 14th in the all-around, leading USU to a 10th-place finish. Mabb then retired from gymnastics and transferred to Cal Poly Pomona, she later returned to competition and repeated as an All-American in 1981. Kris Stano Floor Exercise 1982 Kris Stano placed fourth on the floor exercise at the AIAW Nationals in 1982 in Memphis, the highest finish ever posted by an Aggie gymnast at the national championships. She was 11th in the all-around competition, missing All-America honors by one place. Student-Athlete Services The Office of Student-Athlete Services at Utah State University is designed to assist student-athletes in the areas of academic, vocational and social development. The office s goal is to support student-athletes in their pursuit of degrees that prepare them for satisfying careers. The Office of Student-Athlete Services also helps to determine that student-athletes meet and maintain NCAA, WAC and Utah State University eligibility standards. The following is a list of services provided through the Student-Athlete Services Office. Study Sessions Supervised study sessions are offered to student-athletes four evenings each week throughout the school year. These study sessions, held after class and practice, provide a quiet and structured time frame for student-athletes to focus on class work. Tutors regularly attend these sessions and are available to assist student-athletes with course work and use of computer labs. CHAMPS/Life Skills Program The Office of Student-Athlete Services assists with the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills (Challenging Athletes Minds for Success) program through athletics at Utah State University. The CHAMPS/ Life Skills program offers workshops to student-athletes on topics including effective study skills, career services, time management, test-taking, note-taking, interpersonal relationships and alcohol and other drug education. Student-Athlete Services also provides a twocredit, new student-athlete orientation course in the fall semester for all new student-athletes. Upperclass Student-Athlete Mentors (SAMs) assist new student-athletes through this course and in making a smooth transition to the university and Division I athletics. Registration and Academic Advising The Office of Student-Athlete Services helps student-athletes understand university administrative policies and procedures, and coordinates class registration. All student-athletes have priority registration, allowing them to select necessary courses a full week before campus registration begins. This assures that courses student-athletes select fulfill major requirements and fit their time schedules each semester. Student-athletes are assigned academic advisers when they enter USU. These advisers are the people most knowledgeable about each particular program of study, ensuring that student-athletes progress toward graduation. Eligibility Student-Athlete Services staff members can answer questions about continued eligibility stats. The office is responsible for monitoring student-athletes academic progress throughout each semester and for communicating potential concerns to student-athletes and coaches. Career Counseling If student-athletes are unsure about selecting a major or career, the Office of Student-Athlete Services can assist in defining their interests. The office works cooperatively with USU Career Services and campus advisers to help student-athletes choose areas of study that will prepare them for satisfying careers. Tutoring Tutoring is arranged for all student-athletes who desire additional academic support. Trained undergraduate and graduate students offer individual and small-group tutoring sessions. Fishing Logan Canyon The Cache Valley, a fertile green valley with lakes and streams, is surrounded by the Wellsville Mountains on the west and the Bear River Range on the east. Just east of Logan is the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, accessed by Logan Canyon Scenic Byway (Hwy. 89). Stan Albrecht President Stan Albrecht was named Utah State University s 15th president and assumed his new position on Feb. 1, 2005. At the time of the announcement, Albrecht was serving as executive vice president and provost at Utah State, a position he held since 2001. He previously served as dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences from 1998-2001. I care deeply about this university and its mission, Albrecht said when he was hired. I strongly believe that it has the potential to remain one of the outstanding teaching, research and outreach universities in this country. The world of higher education is being transformed by technology, and the ability to access and apply knowledge will be more critical than ever before to compete in today s world and to reap economic benefits. ADMINISTRATION Albrecht replaced Kermit L. Hall, who was named president of the University of Albany, which is part of the State University of New York. Hall served four years as the president at Utah State. As part of the decision, the Regents considered input and suggestions from trustees, faculty, students, administrators, staff and the public. Albrecht was part of a national search for Utah State s president four years ago and has the confidence and support of the university s community. Prior to his arrival at Utah State, Albrecht served as an administrator and professor at the University of Florida from 1993-98. He also served for 18 years at Brigham Young University (1974-92), including three years as academic vice president and associate provost. He began his career as an assistant professor of sociology at Utah State University in 1970 through 1974. A sociologist, Albrecht has written extensively, including as a coauthor of the textbooks Social Psychology and Social Science Research Methods, both published by Prentice-Hall. He has authored numerous scholarly papers on a wide range of topics, including the environment, energy development and rural health. Albrecht received his doctorate from Washington State University in 1970, a master s degree from Washington State University in 1968 and bachelor s degree from Brigham Young University in 1966. All three degrees were in sociology. He is a member of the Science Committee for the Minerals Management Service of the U.S. Department of Interior. He has served as a council member of the Society for Human Ecology and as vice president of the Rural Sociological Society. Albrecht is married to Joyce Albrecht, Utah State s current associate vice president for University Advancement. Randy Spetman Athletics Director After eight years (1996-2003) as the director of athletics at the United States Air Force Academy, Randy Spetman is entering his second year at Utah State University after assuming the director of athletics position on July 1, 2004. Familiar with the western part of the United States as well as the Western Athletic Conference, Spetman oversaw a 27-sport intercollegiate program, as well as the physical education and intramural programs at the Academy. A major reason for accepting the offer to come to Utah State, Spetman said, is its emphasis on academics and the way it believes in its student-athletes. He said the University s 10th highest graduation rate in the nation among its student-athletes is evidence of its commitment. He looks forward to continuing his rivalries against Mountain West teams as well, such as the University of Utah and Brigham Young. The WAC has to be able to compete against the Mountain West and to be a top conference if it wants to compete in a Bowl Championship Series, he said. While at the Air Force Academy, Spetman s influence went full circle. As the only military athletic director in the nation at the Division I level, Spetman was the first athletic director to have been an athlete and a coach at the Academy. A 1976 graduate, Spetman s competitive spirit and warrior-like attitude earned him three letters in football. The team co-captain as a senior, he also captured the heavyweight Wing Open Boxing Championship twice. After receiving his commission, he served as an assistant football coach at the Academy in 1977 under legendary coach Ben Martin. Originally from Council Bluffs, Iowa, Spetman assumed his duties as athletic director at the Academy in 1996. He administered the schoolís 27-sport intercollegiate program as well as the physical education and intramural programs. During his tenure at the Academy, the athletic teams enjoyed unmatched success. The football team went to four postseason bowl games and became one of the top 15 programs nationally since 1997 in total wins with 57. The men s basketball team under the direction of Joe Scott enjoyed its best season in over 10 years with a 12-16 mark in 2003 and then advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2004. A graduate from Squadron Officer School, he attended the National War College and earned a master s degree in National Security Strategy. Spetman also holds a master s in management and supervision from Central Michigan University. He was a member of the Mountain West Conference Championship Committee, Handbook Committee and Television Committee. He was also the third vice president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. He and his wife, the former Rebecca Luhring of Des Moines, Iowa, are the parents of two children, Brian and Kim. 30

Facilities Gymnastics Training Center Dee Glen Smith Spectrum (10,270) Aggie gymnastics fans have proven to be some of the most loyal and appreciative in the nation, as Utah State has ranked in the top 10 nationally in attendance each of the last seven years. A major factor in the Aggies local support is the Gymnastics Booster Club, headed by Brad Simons. Now in its 11th year, the club is under the umbrella of the Big Blue Club. All members contributing more than $100 receive Big Blue Benefits in addition to their gymnastics benefits. The Gymnastics Booster Club has four levels of contributions: $25, $50, $100 and $250. Membership benefits vary accordingly. All contributions are tax deductible and 100 percent of the contribution goes to the Utah State gymnastics development fund.
