Gymnastics Utah State at (#20) Cal-Berkeley with (#13) Oklahoma, Arizona January 21, 2001 Berkeley, Calif. 3 p.m. THIS WEEK Utah State travels to Berkeley, Calif. to compete in a quad-meet featuring (#20) Cal-Berkeley, (#13) Oklahoma, and Arizona Sun., Jan. 21. The meet will begin at 3 p.m. (MST). SCOUTING CAL-BERKELEY Cal-Berkeley, currently ranked 20th in the nation, opened the 2001 season with a 191.650 to finish fourth in a quad-meet featuring Denver, Washington, and Maryland. The Golden Bears will compete at San Jose State Fri., Jan. 19 before hosting the quad-meet Sunday. All-time USU is 4-2 against Cal-Berkeley. The two teams last meet during the 1999 season when the Aggies came out on top 192.950-180.425 in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. SCOUTING OKLAHOMA Under the direction of former Olympic coach Steve Nunno (co-head coach with Becky Switzer) 13th-ranked Oklahoma opened the season Fri., Jan. 12 with a 194.025-189.300 win over Texas Woman s University. The Sooners swept the top three spots in every event except the floor exercise where OU took first and second. All-time the Aggies are 8-10 versus Oklahoma. USU has not competed against the Sooners since 1998 when they met at the NCAA Regionals. OU scored a 193.125 to the Aggies 191.175. SCOUTING ARIZONA Arizona finished second in its season-opener (193.450) behind New Hampshire, but notched two key wins over North Carolina State and James Madison Jan. 14. Wildcat gymnasts won individual event titles on the vault, bars, beam, and in the all-around. All-time Utah State is 10-21 against Arizona. USU and UA last meet at the 1998 Midwest Regionals. Arizona came out on top 194.750-191.175. NEXT WEEK The Aggies open the 2001 home schedule in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum Fri., Jan. 26 against Boise State at 7 p.m. This will be the second meeting of the season for the two teams. Boise State came away with a 192.225-188.800 victory in the first meeting on Jan. 15. UTAH STATE S RAY CORN Utah State s Ray Corn (Northern Colorado 71) is in his 24th year as head coach of the Aggies. He is the only gymnastics coach in USU history. Corn has led his teams to a 327-188-2 regular-season meet record and has now led them to post-season competition in 22 of his 23 seasons, including 15 straight trips to the NCAA Midwest Regionals. Five times Aggie squads have competed at the national championships. Corn was named NCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 1991 and has been honored as High Country Athletic Conference Coach of the Year three times and Big West Conference Coach of the Year in 1994, 1996 and 1998. Corn s overall record, including post-season play, currently stands at 380-326-2. INJURY REPORT Junior Kirra Seeley (Degener) (Kaysville, Utah) will likely sit out the 2001 season recovering from surgery on her right thumb to repair a torn ligament suffered during fall training. The Aggies got off to a slow start having to count falls on both the uneven bars (47.450) and vault (47.725). Senior Amanda Jenkins (Plain City, Utah) led Utah State on the bars with an impressive 9.850 in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Tina Ellis (Kearns, Utah) followed close behind with a 9.825. On the vault Ellis and freshman Mika Houston (Las Vegas, Nev.) turned in a solid pair of 9.700's, while junior Jessenia Abrego (Las Vegas, Nev.) rounded out the Aggie top three with a 9.625. USU continued to struggle in the third rotation counting two falls on the floor exercise to post a 46.500. The event was highlighted by senior Kristin O'Dell's (Middleton, Wis.) 9.725. In the final rotation Utah State recorded a 47.125 on the beam. The team was anchored by sophomore Kristen Bloom's (Ossining, N.Y.) 9.825 and Ellis' 9.750 performance. A LOOK AT THE AGGIES- Jessenia Abrego - Junior from Las Vegas, Nev.... turned in score of 9.625 on vault and 9.475 on floor at Boise State (1/15)... has career-highs of 9.825 on the vault, 9.900 on the bars, and 9.900 on the floor. Kristen Bloom Sophomore from Ossining, N.Y... competed in just two events in the season opener against Boise State (1/15), posting scores of 9.825 on beam and 9.525 on floor... owns career-highs of 9.700 on vault, 9.875 on bars, 9.850 on beam, 9.925 on floor, and 39.175 in the all-around. Chere DuPaix - Freshman from Salt Lake City, Utah... has not done gymnastics for more than two years but is slowly improving and should be a factor in the bar lineup by the end of the season. Tina Ellis Sophomore from Kearns, Utah... competed in the all-around for the first time in her career at Boise State (1/15) recording a score of 37.650... finished third on beam (9.750) and vault (9.700) at BSU... owns career bests of 9.700 on vault, 9.875 on bars, 9.825 on beam, 8.375 on floor and 37.650 in the all-around. Kristen Fargo Sophomore from Manassas, Va.... saw action on the balance beam against BSU (1/15) scoring a 9.525... has career bests of 9.800 on vault, and 9.675 on beam. Stephanie Gordon (Huff) Junior from Spanish Fork, Utah... she is once again expected to be one of USU s most reliable competitors on the vault and floor exercise... may also see all-around action in the beginning of the season... recorded career-highs of 9.800 on vault, 9.425 on beam, and 9.850 on floor in 2000. Mika Houston - Freshman from Las Vegas, Nev.... saw all-around action in her collegiate debut at Boise State (1/15)... finished tied for third on the vault (9.700) with teammate Tina Ellis at BSU. Amanda Jenkins Senior from Plain City, Utah... competed for the first time in her career at Boise State (1/15) finishing third on the bars with a 9.850 performance. Nicole Kilpatrick Sophomore from Ringwood, N.J.... saw action on vault (9.100) and bars (9.575) at Boise State (1/15)... scored a career-high 9.800 on the beam last year. Kyla Mattioli - Freshman from Hampton, N.J.... competed on the vault and floor in her first collegiate meet at BSU (1/15).
