Mocksville Woman s Club Scholarships 2015-16 The Mocksville Woman s Club awards two scholarships each year. The first is the $1,500 Sallie Southall Cotten scholarship to a male or female student, resident of Davie County, rules and application below. The second is the Mocksville Woman s Club scholarship, also $1,500, to a female senior high student, resident of Davie County, application and rules found in a separate listing on the school website. Applications must be received by November 23, 2015, and interviews will be held Dec. 7 at Davie High School for both DHS and DCECHS students. Due to the interview timing, end of junior year transcripts, class rank, number of students in class are accepted. Also ACT is accepted if the student did not take SAT. Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship Local Award Awarded by Mocksville Woman s Club The Mocksville Woman s Club awards $1,500 as a local award to the male or female Davie County student who meets the attached criteria. The Sallie Southall Cotten scholarship is three part. A student can receive $1,500 from the Mocksville Woman s Club. The student then agrees to compete for on a district level for $1,250. If the student wins the District 4 award, he/she goes on to compete for a $24,000 four year award. The Mocksville Woman s Club $1,500 winner agrees: to be available to compete in the District 4 scholarship competition that will be held January 23, 2016, at the Weir Jordan House, 223 North Edgeworth St., Greensboro, NC 27401; to attend the District 4 Arts Festival Feb. 13, 2016; and if the candidate becomes the District 4 winner, then he/she agrees to compete in the state competition at Campbell University March 4, 2016. The $1,500 award from the local club will be sent to the college of the winner s choice. The $1,250 district award is sent to the college of the winner s choice. 1. Applicant must be a resident of North Carolina and must be a member of a senior class in an accredited North Carolina School. 2. Applicant must be in the upper fourth of the class. 3. Applicant must use the official application form (or copies of) published in the Forms sections of the current GFWC NC Administration Book, attached. 4. The scholarship is to be used at a four year college or university in the state of North Carolina. THE FOLLOWING MUST BE SUBMITTED: 1. Application form from the Forms sections of the current GFWC NC Administration Book, attached. 2. Recent photograph. 3. A personal letter as to why student desires to continue their education, the student s future plans, and why financial aid is necessary. 4. Letter of recommendation from either the school principal, school guidance counselor, or a school teacher. 5. Letter of recommendation from a business or professional person OTHER THAN SCHOOL PERSONNEL. 6. Letter of recommendation from the President of sponsoring club. High school transcript with grades through the first semester of senior year, complete SAT scores, or ACT scores if SAT was not taken, class rank with number of students in class, and grade point average weighted and unweighted. *(Transcripts with grades, class rank and number of students in class through the end of the junior year will be accepted.)* 8. Copy of most recent Federal Tax Return for applicant s parent(s) and tax return for the applicant if any has been filed. Document any significant changes in family income if necessary. General Information from Mocksville Woman s Club regarding 2015-16 Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship Rules/Application The Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship shall be awarded by GFWC of North Carolina to an outstanding senior (male or female). The student, from an accredited school in North Carolina, must be sponsored by a Federated club in good standing with GFWC NC. Investments of the State SSCS Fund shall provide the scholarship monies and other expenses incurred in awarding the scholarship. The tenure for the state awarded $24,000 scholarship shall be four years in a North Carolina school, provided the academic record and conduct of the recipient justifies continuance of the scholarship. (In the event the recipient graduates in three years, the tenure shall be three years). The recipient shall undertake and satisfactorily complete a full academic number of hours as described by the current college catalog. Any grade point average, GPA, less than 3.0 does not satisfactorily meet the terms of the contract. Scholarships are administered through the GFWC NC Headquarters in cooperation with State SSCS Committee Chairman and the Financial Officer of the college which the recipient attends. Half of the annual funds shall be paid by GFWC NC Headquarters prior to each semester upon receipt of transcript and release form of student from the State SSCS Chairman. This administration the SSCS shall be $6,000 per year, for a total of $24,000. The runnerup shall receive the one time sum of $1,500, the second runner up $1,000, and the remaining contestants shall receive $500 each, which shall be sent to their schools of choice. The recipient shall agree not to accept other scholarships of greater total value than the SSCS while receiving this scholarship. This would include other scholarships exceeding a single award of $6,000 or more per year. Should the Scholarship recipient find it necessary to withdraw from college, the student must notify the State Scholarship Chairman as soon as possible. SSC page 2 of 4
