Wai anae Hawaiian Civic Club Since 1935 WAI`ANAE HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB 2016 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS GUIDELINES ELIGIBILITY: Must be accepted into a college, university or training program. Must have a GPA of 2.5 or better for graduating high school seniors Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher for college students Must be of Hawaiian ancestry Preference will be given to applicants who are members in good standing of WHCC A scholarship in the amount of $500 for the academic school year 2016 2017 will be paid directly to the school for the recipient s tuition costs. REQUIREMENTS: The items listed below must be submitted before your application will be considered: Completed WHCC application form. Two (2) Letters of Reference. One page typed essay (see scholarships for description) Official grade transcripts Evidence of admission to an institute of higher learning. Recipients can only receive only one award each academic year. \ If awarded a scholarship, a recipient must participate in at least one (1) event with the WHCC during the academic year. George & Philemina Kawelo Memorial Scholarship Pelekikena for the years 1980 to 1982 both George and Philemina served the Wai anae Hawaiian Civic Club with great love and aloha. A tribute was paid to them and the club at the dedication of the Ku ilioloa Heiau, Kaneilio Point in Poka i Bay, Wai anae. Their tireless efforts to further the interests of the Wai anae Community - the Kawelo Ohana were presented the Outstanding Hawaiian Civic Club Family of the Year the coveted Pualeilani Award. This scholarship is a memorial to George and Philemina Kawelo who believed in furthering the education of Hawaiian students. The recipient of this scholarship may enroll in a Technical, Trade, Business, or Vocational training program. Hawaiian community and civic involvement, volunteering for election Paige Kawelo Barber Memorial Scholarship A wife, mother and grandmother, Paige Kawelo Barber was a 1958 graduate of Waipahu High School. In 1984 Paige obtained a Bachelors of Arts Degree from Antioch University and in 1986, Paige received her Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Hawaii Manoa. She was the Founder of Nanakuli Housing Corporation; Director and President of the Polynesian Voyaging Society Hokule a; Recipient of the 2006 O o Awards and many honors for Outstanding Native Hawaiian accomplishments. This scholarship is a memorial to Paige who passed away on August 3, 2005. As a tribute to her memory, the recipient of this Na Lei Kaiaulu Award will continue her legacy in Hawaiian Studies - to cultivate, educate, and inspire the Hawaiian people and to empower those who will go on to share Paige s vision financial literacy and home ownership. Hawaiian community and civic involvement, volunteering for election Nani Kelekolio Hitzeman Memorial Scholarship A wife, mother and grandmother, Nani Hitzeman was a 1966 graduate of Kamehameha Schools, and resident of Makaha. As a member of the Wai`anae Hawaiian Civic Club, she shared her many talents as a singer, musician, hula dancer and chanter with club members, family and friends, and taught us to embrace the Hawaiian culture, as was her passion. This scholarship is a memorial to Nani who passed away on June 6, 2007. As a tribute to her memory, the recipient of this scholarship will be required to enroll in an accredited Hawaiian Studies and/or Language, Oli, Hula, or Music Program. Gloria Gabrillo Kawelo Memorial Scholarship A wife, mother and grandmother, Gloria Kawelo was a 1968 graduate of Radford High School and member of the Radford Alumni Association. She received a Bachelor s Degree from the University of Hawaii West Oahu in 1993. Gloria worked as a Pharmaceutical Computer Analyst for Kaiser Medical Center for 39 years. As a member of the Wai`anae Hawaiian Civic Club, she chaired the health committee and shared valuable health information on current health issues affecting native Hawaiians. Gloria was given the Outstanding Non-Hawaiian Award from the Oahu Council of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in 2010 and was a life time resident of Wai anae. This scholarship is a memorial to Gloria who passed away on October 4, 2011. As a tribute to her memory, the recipient of this scholarship will be required to enroll in an accredited Health Related Program that will benefit Hawaiians and non-hawaiians. to health issues for Hawaiians. Georgette Kawelo Frosch Memorial Scholarship A wife, mother and grandmother, Gege Kawelo was a 1958 graduate of Waipahu High School and in 1987, she obtained her Bachelors of Arts degree in Professional Studies from University of Hawaii -West Oahu. In 1989, Gege received her Master s in Public Administration from Central Michigan University. As President of the Wai anae Hawaiian Civic Club 2002-2012, Gege was the community liaison for Ku ililolo Heiau; project director for E Ala Canoe; and coordinator for the Wai anae Ahupua a committee. Her passion was to serve the Hawaiian people and this E Ala award is one of many endeavors that have enriched the educational pursuits of our Wai anae students. This scholarship is a memorial to Gege who passed away on November 15, 2012. As a tribute to her memory, the recipient of this E Ala scholarship will be required to enroll in an accredited Hawaiian Studies and/or Navigational Program. to Hawaiian culture, history, and navigational skills (canoe, sailing, paddling, etc.) Also include your immediate family background.
