STATEMENT OF BRIAN LENEVE REPRESENTiNG THE MONTEREY BAY CHAPTER OF THE CALIFORJFORNIA NATiVE PLANT SOCIETY The BLM should be ashamed of themselves. I believe that rather than dealing with stopping illegal riding and understanding that BLM could face another lawsuit and probably loose, BLM chose to close the entire area because of connivance rather than necessity. No one other than BLM has ever wanted the area closed. I never requested that and CNPS never asked for that. I still believe that OHV and the environment can coexist and both use the same land, provided that the OHV community lives by the rules set down. I have to admit that I have never seen where the OHV community is willing to police themselves, and reading the threads on the South Bay Riders forum I do not see any change in attitude, however I still believe that it could work. I believe that Clear Creek is a world class OHV area and although I do not like motorcycles I appreciate the skill it takes to ride one and believe OHV users have a right to pursue their sport and areas must be set aside for that use. I would much rather continue using Clear Creek than open another area previously undisturbed. Like many others I have a problem with the EPA report. I was there when the EPA monitored during a Quicksilver event and it was so muddy that I was not allowed to drive in. I will not believe that air born asbestos was possible that day, but EPA registered high readings. In business I have always had the belief that something must pass the logic test and that day of monitoring does not come close to passing the logic test which makes the rest of the EPA report questionable. I believe that Clear Creek should be reopened to some riding. I have not received enough information to support any of the alternatives but I will support some sort of riding. Before the OHV community thinks I have gone over to the dark side trust that if we get Clear Creek reopened I will do everything in my power to make sure only designated routes are used. I request that BLM consider some form of OHV use in Clear Creek. Brian LeNeve
