Dear Friends, As this year draws to a close, we at Florida Hospital are reminded of your generosity that keeps us together on our journey of providing quality health care for the community. Not only are we committed to raising the bar on the care we provide, but also on the resources this community needs to live fulfilling, healthier lives. As we look toward the future, we see a growing emphasis on preventive health. A vital part of our mission and vision is helping people identify problems early to help avoid disease. We have celebrated many successes this past year, and I would be remiss if I did not thank you for helping us achieve these milestones. At the beginning of the year, we were named the number one hospital in Florida by US News & World Report. We were blessed to break ground on a new patient tower at Florida Hospital Kissimmee and at our new Winter Garden Health Campus. We also broke ground on three Florida Hospital for Women facilities in Orlando, Celebration and Winter Park. And at Florida Hospital for Children, we were recognized as a recipient of Magnet recognition status for excellence in nursing. Only seven percent of the nation s hospitals have received this honor. All of these milestones serve as reminders to us as an organization to continue our journey to excellence, and to not lose sight of our goal of being a safe, healing, nurturing, and most of all, a caring health care provider for our neighbors and loved ones. Your continued support will keep us on the path of providing excellence in both hearts and healing, and for that, we are most grateful. Your dedication and compassion to our mission and to a healthier community is immeasurable. Golden Gala RECAP XXXIII In November, individuals across Central Florida and beyond came together to celebrate and share their generosity at the thirty-third annual Florida Hospital Foundation Golden Gala. Gifts given will support mammograms for uninsured patients, our Children s Compassionate Care Cart relieving a little of the stress for parents with children in long-term care at Florida Hospital for Children and Florida Hospital s Multiple Myeloma Research Program. Thank you to the Circle of Friends and countless volunteers who made this evening a success. GENEROSITY IN ACTION A Look Back at What Your Dollars Have Done In 2013 CANCER INSTITUTE Project: Life-saving Research The Florida Hospital Cancer Institute (FHCI) is on a journey to find a cure for cancer. By participating in more than 100 national clinical trials and several benchmark research projects across multiple cancer specialties, physicians and researchers are coming together to save lives. Thanks to the generosity of community members and organizations, in 2013 we have made strides to improve outcomes and enhance the quality of patient lives through cutting-edge research. Because of our community s generous support, the FHCI was able to conduct benchmark research in brain, breast, gynecologic, lung and pancreatic cancers; and multiple myeloma. CARDIOVASCULAR INSTITUTE Project: The Trina Hidalgo Heart Care Center The Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute s Trina Hidalgo Heart Care Center provides outpatient medical treatment, critical medications and disease-management education to uninsured heart failure and cardiovascular patients while significantly reducing hospital readmission rates, and above all, saving lives. The clinic sees approximately 750 underserved patients a year, 20 to 30 new patients a month, with more than 4,100 patient visits to date. The goal of the Heart Care Center is for patients to fully recover from their heart condition so they can return to work, obtain health care coverage, manage their disease and stay hearthealthy for life. ALTAMONTE Project: One-year Anniversary of Eden Spa at Florida Hospital Altamonte In 2013, the Eden Spa at Florida Hospital Altamonte celebrated its one-year anniversary of providing hope and healing to patients battling cancer through specialized therapeutic treatments that renew the spirit and rejuvenate the body. This year, Eden Spa provided nearly $100,000 of free therapeutic care to Florida Hospital cancer patients. Because of the generosity of our first 35 Founding 100 members, Eden Spa continues to provide this unique care to under- and uninsured cancer patients in Central Florida. DIABETES INSTITUTE Project: Diabetes Education Scholarships As a result of generous community support, the Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute (FHDI) awarded more than 250 diabetes education scholarships to under- and uninsured patients this year. Diabetes education is critical to better understanding the disease and developing the self-management skills necessary for a better quality of life with diabetes. When Teren was diagnosed with diabetes, she knew she needed to begin seeing an endocrinologist. When her endocrinologist at the FHDI referred her to the diabetes education class, Teren simply could not afford the co-pay required by her insurance plan. The FHDI team told Teren about the Linda Nordyke Hambleton Education Scholarship Fund, so she applied and was awarded a scholarship. Since taking the class, Teren has taken charge of her diabetes and overall health, and she credits the class, instructors and the scholarship with her turnaround. TRANSPLANT INSTITUTE Project: Transplant House At Florida Hospital Orlando, Central Florida patients undergoing the solid-organ transplantation process will now have a home away from home at the new transplant house currently under construction on the Orlando campus. Featuring a caring environment and highquality, affordable accommodations, patients and their adult family members and/or caregivers will enjoy the hospitality and compassion of a small core staff and volunteers who will support them during their healing journey. Patients will also benefit through interaction with other families facing similar challenges. GLOBAL MISSION INITIATIVE Project: Four Global Footprints At Global Mission Initiatives (GMI), we are committed not only to give for a day, but to teach for a lifetime. It is our goal to help those around the world improve their lifestyle and health. We share principles of holistic medicine and seek avenues to partner with each footprint in different ways. Giving of their time, talent and treasure, volunteers raise funds to pay for their trips to the footprint sites where they provide hope and healing. The four global footprints for GMI are: Haiti Adventist Hospital, Port-Au-Prince, Haiti Andrews Memorial Hospital, Kingston, Jamaica Clinica Good Hope, Clinica Americana and Clinica Ana Stahl, Peru Summit Clinic and Learning Village, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (continued on page 4) 3 www.floridahospitalfoundation.org
GENEROSITY IN ACTION (continued) TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR METABOLISM AND DIABETES Project: Type 1 Diabetes Research Program The year 2013 saw tremendous growth at the Translational Research Institute for Metabolism and Diabetes (TRI-MD). The scientists at the TRI-MD are on a journey to develop the first type 1 diabetes research program in Central Florida that will innovate care, increase our knowledge and lead to a cure for the disease. Community members and organizations have donated nearly $485,000 toward our goal of $1 million. These gifts allow the TRI-MD to add a world-class type 1 diabetes researcher to our team to begin this cutting-edge research. FOR CHILDREN Project: Pediatric Palliative Emergency Patient and Family Assistance Fund This program was started in 2010 through the generous support of Rita and Jeff Adler, with the mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ to children and their caregivers experiencing a lifethreatening or life-altering condition through compassion, communication and coordination of care. From 2010 to 2012, the Palliative Care team was comprised of one full-time staff member the Palliative Care coordinator and a group of volunteer clinicians, physicians, social workers and support staff. This team of mostly volunteers has directly impacted the lives of 112 patients through specialized support and care coordination since its inception. With additional community support from our generous friends, including the Adlers, Mark and Lisa Moore, Arnold Gibbs and Universal Orlando and many others, this program has now expanded into our multidisciplinary clinics, becoming a medical home for patients who require the support of a specialized team dedicated to addressing health issues related to life-threatening, life-altering and chronic conditions.this muchneeded expansion will enable the program to serve an anticipated 650 patients in 2014, and more than 1,600 patients in 2016. WINTER PARK MEMORIAL HOSPITAL - A Project: Clinical Staff Education Fund (Tuition Reimbursement) Many Florida Hospital employees seek to advance their education in order to provide the excellent patient care that people expect from Florida Hospital. In Winter Park, the community and the hospital staff are coming together to make this a reality for employees at Winter Park Memorial Hospital (WPMH). Thanks to the generosity of people like Tom and Penny Yochum, Steve Elker and Ed Timberlake, more than $40,000 has been generously given to provide tuition reimbursement for continuing education to employees at WPMH. After a meeting with a team of nurses, I was awed by their dedication to their profession and to WPMH. I was equally moved by their frustration that there were not more dollars available to help them further their education. It seemed to me to be a win-win for our nurses/clinical staff, our patients and WPMH to include an educational component as part of the overall campaign for the hospital. Better and higher education for all benefits every aspect of the hospital and all who are involved. SHARES INTERNATIONAL Ed Timberlake Project: Cleft Lip and Palate Program Most kids want to be accepted by their peers and blend in. Children with cleft lips and/or palates do not have that luxury. Since its founding in 1996, SHARES has alleviated the suffering of more than 2,400 children with cleft lips and/or palates. This life-changing program provides surgery for cleft lips and/or palates free of charge to children from families in Latin America who have little or no economic resources. Over the years, SHARES has relied on the generosity of compassionate volunteers and community members who help fund and staff these medical mission trips. A special thank you to JLR Medical Group, who has generously volunteered the time, talent and treasure of their staff for more than 15 years to provide free anesthesiology services to children in need. A young mother was brought into the recovery area to console her baby after a cleft-lip repair. Suddenly, she knelt down in astonishment, as she didn t recognize her child right before her eyes. Pressing both her hands against her mouth, she could not contain her cries of joy while tears streamed down her face. C. Erwin Velbis, CRNA, Veracruz, Mexico ADVENTIST UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH SCIENCES AT Project: Endowed Scholarships For many students attending the Adventist University of Health Sciences (ADU), a scholarship can mean the difference between dropping out and graduating. This year, more than $88,000 was generously given to establish six new endowed scholarships which were created for ADU students. In addition, ADU distributed $144,000 to 84 students for the 2012-2013 school year. This is a $47,000 increase from the total awarded in 2011-2012, thanks to the generosity of members of our community. Silfane Clenord, junior health sciences major and recipient of the Amelia Roeder Scholarship founded by Dawn and Larry McLendon, said the gift helps relieve financial stress for her and her family.
