The Student Activity Fee for 2005-06 was $248 and used to support the operation, maintenance and debt service expenditures for Student Centers and for support of various student activities as determined by the Student Budget Board. For 2005-06, $913,825 was allocated to support various student organizations, which included a base allocation of $845,000 for fiscal year 2005-06, and $68,825 of unspent funds carried forward from the prior fiscal year. Student organizations applying for student activity fee funding must submit budget requests to one of three budget boards. Only organizations that have registered with the Department of Student Activities are eligible to submit a budget request. All organizations appear before the appropriate board to present their requests and to answer questions of the board members. All three boards are governed by funding policies approved by the Commission on Student Affairs. The Student Budget Board, a committee of the Commission on Student Affairs, is responsible for reviewing budget requests and making annual funding and contingency decisions for University Chartered Student Organizations (UCSO) and University Student Life Programs (USLP) organizations. The Student Budget Board is accountable to the Commission for its funding decisions and for approval of its policies. Its membership is composed of students, staff, and faculty. The Student Budget Board is chaired and advised by the Assistant Director of Student Organizations, a full time administrative staff person in the Department of Student Activities. The Student Budget Board has two auxiliary boards that are responsible to it for funding undergraduate and graduate Registered Student Organizations (RSO). The Student Government Association Budget Board and the Graduate Student Assembly Budget Board are chaired by student representatives and advised by the Assistant Director of Student Organizations. These two boards make annual funding and contingency decisions and administer the small grants program as well. The determining factor of which board an RSO goes to is based on the group having the majority of its members being graduate or undergraduate students.
