Benton Community Foundation Scholarship Application Benton Community Foundation has been investing in our community through philanthropy since 1953. Through the Foundation, donors can establish funds to benefit students and charitable organizations in our community. Because of the generosity of donors who have established endowed funds, last year BCF was able to distribute over $700,000 to students and charitable organizations. **************************************************************************************************** Please read all information carefully prior to completing application. Applicants Must: 1. Mark only those scholarships for which you are qualified. (Read criteria carefully) 2. Be graduating from a Benton County High School unless otherwise specified. 3. Complete scholarship application and sign where indicated. (Electronic signature accepted) 4. Include most recent high school transcript (Official transcript is not required) 5. If you are applying for a scholarship based on financial need SAR (Student Aid Report) of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Form is required. We are specifically looking for the Expected Family Contribution number. (For more information: https://fafsa.ed.gov/ If it is not possible for you to submit this report then please ask your high school counselor to call the foundation office on your behalf.) 6. Submit application electronically, preferably in one file. 7. Email completed application to sarah@bcfgives.org by the deadline. Please put 2018 Scholarship Application in subject line. You will receive an email confirmation when your application has been received. If awarded, a scholarship must be used for the 2018-2019 academic year. ALL REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET, OR APPLICATION WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY 5:00 PM ON MARCH 12, 2018. Applications also available at www.bcfgives.org **************************************************************************************************** Tips and Suggestions for completing your application: Each scholarship has its own selection criteria. Selection committees will review and evaluate applications in various categories/areas on a weighted average (points awarded in each category.) Failure to complete any portion of the application greatly reduces your chance of being awarded a scholarship. Example of categories considered are decision to pursue field of study, goals/future plans, qualifications for scholarships, academics, leadership and financial need (for those scholarships where this is a requirement.) Other Recommendations: Make sure your cumulative GPA appears on your transcript. Be neat! Application must be typed. Have someone proofread your application, so you make a good impression. 2018 Scholarship Opportunities Please indicate with an X below each scholarship for which you are applying Mark only those for which you are qualified! (Read the criteria carefully.) All applicants must be graduating from a Benton County High School unless otherwise specified. Scholarships based on Financial Need. Be sure to submit the correct paperwork as listed on the application. The Herb & Peggy Ballard Memorial Scholarship: one $750 award for payment of tuition and books at any accredited institution of higher education. Student must demonstrate financial need; GPA 2.5 or above; open to graduating seniors of Monroe High School only. The Loren J. & Audrey W. Smith Scholarship: one $1,850 award for study at Linn Benton Community College. Student must demonstrate financial need. Scholarship is renewable. Carefully read the eligibility requirements for each scholarship. Check only those where you meet the requirements. Speak to your qualifications for each in your application. The Ruth & Julian Adams Memorial Scholarship: one $1,700 award for the study of journalism at any accredited institution of higher education. The David Bruce Belcher Scholarship: two $1,200 awards to study nursing, therapy or special education. Must have a desire to help persons with developmental disabilities. The John & Nancy Dennis Scholarship: one $1,125 award for any course of study at Oregon State University. If applying for this scholarship, please answer question 5. The Robin V. Jensen Scholarship: one $2,100 award to pursue a bachelor degree at an accredited university with an emphasis on Forensic Science or Criminal Justice. Must be active in sports and community service throughout high school and have a GPA of 3.0-3.5. Open to graduating seniors of any high school in Benton County, but preference given to Crescent Valley high school applicants. This scholarship is renewable. The Allen & Jean Peters Family Scholarship: One $1,200 award for the study of health sciences (human nutrition, health or fitness) at Oregon State University. Strong preference for a student applying to the College of Public Health and Human Services. The Dale & Thomasina Trout Scholarship two $5,250 awards for post high-school study. Applicant must be in the upper half of the class based on academic performance and have a proven record of activities or athletics. This scholarship is renewable. Preference is given to students not likely to receive other scholarships. If applying for this scholarship, please answer question 5. The Charles F. & Elaine Mellen Sutherland Forestry Education Scholarship one $1,500 award for post-high school study. Applicant must attend Oregon State University and be enrolled in the College of Forestry. The Charles F. & Elaine Mellen Sutherland Public Health and Human Services Scholarship one $1,500 award for post-high school study. Applicant must attend Oregon State University and be enrolled in the College of Public Health and Human Services. Preference given to minority students who are US Citizens. Scholarships for Vocational Training The Knights of Pythias Scholarship: one $6,275 award for pursuit of vocational training rather than university studies. This scholarship is renewable. The Otto J. & Adelia Hahn Scholarship and Peter & Barbara Hutton Scholarship: one $8,700 award. Priority given to students attending Linn Benton Community College who are pursuing a degree in the healthcare field, such as nursing; degree in a mechanical trade or manual arts. Preference will be given to applicants raised in rural areas. High School Specific Scholarships CHS Only: The Emily & Vic Logan Tuition Scholarship: one $1,500 award for the study of history, foreign affairs, or the political process at any institution of Higher Education in the State of Oregon. Must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher. Proven record of school activities and community service. CHS Only: The John Callahan Memorial Scholarship one $1,100 award to a student who plans to attend a two or four-year college or university. Applicant must have played on the CHS Boys soccer team and demonstrate qualities of loyalty, compassion and humor. Preference given to student who will be first family member to attend college. CHS or CVHS: The Coopey Boys' Memorial Scholarship: one $1,800 award to a student with a physical handicap or a serious chronic health problem. CHS or CVHS: The Marjorie Rowett Sutherland Scholarship: one $600 award for post high-school study. Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be pursuing a business degree. Preference given to those students who excel in high school curriculum related to business. CHS or CVHS: The John C. & Jeanne L Mackey Endowed Scholarship: one $2,550 award for study at any of the public universities in Oregon. Applicant must be US citizen, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and a proven record of activities and/or athletics. If applying for this scholarship, please answer question 5. PHS only: The Harry & Lorraine Lagestee Scholarship: two $2,500 awards for students attending LBCC or OSU. GPA must be between 2.5 and 3.5. Recipient must have participated in at least two sports during school. Please include the number of years you ve attended PHS. Monroe HS only: The Herb & Peggy Ballard Memorial Scholarship: see description listed on page 1 of this application Monroe HS only: The James Kohl Give Me a Chance Scholarship: accumulated GPA between 2.0 and 3.0.
