Why do you need health and safety training? Health and safety informa on and training helps you to: Ensure staff know how to work safely and without risk to health Develop a posi ve health and safety culture, where safe and healthy working becomes second nature Meet your legal duty to protect the health and safety of pupils, staff and visitors Effec ve training contributes towards making employees competent regarding their health and safety and can help: avoid the distress of accidents and ill health avoid the financial costs of accidents and occupa onal ill health such as sickness absence, damaged equipment and demo vated staff All staff in Liverpool City Council s Health and Safety Unit are professionally qualified H&S advisors. We have detailed knowledge of legisla ve requirements relevant to schools and are commi ed to providing quality training. 3

The Law The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 requires you to provide training, instruc on and supervision as necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonably prac cable, the health and safety of your staff, pupils, visitors and contractors. This is expanded by the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regula ons 1999, which iden fy situa ons where health and safety training is par cularly important e.g. when people start work, on exposure to new or increased risks and where exis ng skills may require upda ng. Course costs per delegate Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools and Schools with a Service Level Agreement with the Health and Safety Unit Half day Full day 75 150 All other schools 150 300 Prices are exclusive of VAT for Academies and Free Schools. Please note that failure to arrive on the day will incur the full course fee. 4

Managing Work Related Stress in Schools Essen al training for Head Teachers and Senior Leaders who have a responsibility for line management of staff. Health and Safety for School Governors Essen al training for new and exis ng Governors to introduce you to the basics of health and safety management and legisla on. It will cover roles and responsibili es for the health and safety of school employees, pupils and others on school premises. The two hour course is designed to provide an awareness and understanding of: Governor roles and responsibili es Key health and safety legisla on Health and safety issues relevant to schools Guidance and support available to schools Date: 7 November 2018 Time: 17.30 to 19.30 Loca on: Toxteth Annexe Tea/coffee will be provided 8

Risk Assessment Essen al training for those with management responsibility for conduc ng risk assessments e.g. Head Teachers, Senior Leaders, Heads of Department, Schools Business Managers, Site Managers etc. The course is designed to provide an understanding of: The risk assessment process The requirement to assess risks associated with schools The general areas and ac vi es a school should risk assess How to access LCC guidance and adapt model risk assessments How to access CLEAPSS guidance and model risk assessments Staff responsibili es and their involvement in risk assessment Date: 21 November 2018 Time: 9.00 to 12.00 Loca on: Toxteth Annexe Tea/coffee will be provided 9

Health and Safety Awareness in Premises Management Essen al awareness training for those with responsibility for the management of school premises including Head Teachers, Senior Leaders, Caretakers, Site Managers, School Business Managers etc. The course is designed to provide an awareness of the range of subjects and the relevant health and safety standards and tes ng requirements for effec ve premises management. Subjects covered include: General contractor management CDM Asbestos awareness Building inspec ons Gas and electrical safety Fire management Li ing equipment and pressure vessels Water management Planning Date: 28 November 2018 Time: 9.00 15.00 Loca on: Toxteth Annexe Tea/coffee and lunch will be provided. 10

Accident and Incident Repor ng and Inves ga on Essen al training for staff who are responsible for repor ng accidents and/or carrying out inves ga ons into accidents and incidents at School. The course is designed to provide an understanding of: Why accidents and incidents are reported, recorded and inves gated The different levels and processes for repor ng The requirements of RIDDOR How to undertake an appropriate accident inves ga on The rules on record disclosure and reten on All levels of responsibili es and staff involvement Date: 5 December 2018 Time: 9.00 to 12.00 Loca on: Toxteth Annexe Tea/coffee will be provided. 11

Managing Events Essential training for those organising and running small scale local events held on school grounds, up to 499 participants, including Head Teachers, Caretakers, Site Managers and Business Managers. The course is designed to provide an awareness of general event management and topics covered include: Responsibili es Risk assessment Fire and emergency procedures Calcula ng capaci es Food and alcohol Incident repor ng Managing specific hazards associated with the type of event Date: 15 January 2019 Time: 9.00 to 12.00 Loca on: Toxteth Annexe Tea/coffee will be provided. 12

Manual Handling of Loads Essen al training for staff who undertake or manage manual handling ac vi es as part of their everyday du es e.g. Site Managers, Cleaners, Kitchen and Grounds Staff and for staff who are responsible for undertaking manual handling risk assessments. The course is designed to provide an understanding of: The anatomy of body mechanics (relevant to manual handling) Safe li ing and handling techniques Employer and employee legal du es Manual handling risk assessment Date: 23 January 2019 Time: 9.00 to 12.00 Loca on: Toxteth Annexe Tea/coffee will be provided. 13

Work at Height (Ladders and Stepladders) Essen al training for all staff who are expected to undertake work at height tasks using ladders and stepladders and for staff with a responsibility for the purchase, maintenance and storage of ladders and stepladders. The course is designed to provide an understanding of: Ladder and stepladder safety Work at height equipment inspec ons Work at height legisla on Work at height risk assessment Date: 6 February 2019 Time: 9.00 to 12.00 Loca on: Toxteth Annexe Tea/coffee will be provided. 14

Managing Hazardous Substances in Schools (COSHH) Essen al training for staff who manage processes using hazardous substances, are responsible for undertaking COSHH risk assessments and for staff who regularly work with chemicals. The course is designed to provide an understanding of: The substances covered by the COSHH regula ons The difference between MSDS and risk assessments How to undertake a COSHH risk assessment Legisla on covering hazardous substances Date: 27 February 2019 Time: 9.00 to 12.00 Loca on: Toxteth Annexe Tea/coffee will be provided. 15

Managing Fire Safety in Schools Essen al training for those with responsibility for managing the fire safety arrangements in schools including Head Teachers, Senior Leaders, Site Managers, Business Managers etc. The course is designed to provide an understanding of: The legal requirements rela ng to fire safety in schools The roles and responsibili es for implemen ng fire procedures The principles of fire risk assessment Fire preven on and protec on measures relevant to schools Fire risk assessment and other relevant fire safety documenta on required at schools Date: 3 March 2019 Time: 9.00 to 12.00 Loca on: Toxteth Annexe Tea/coffee will be provided. 16

Fire Marshal and Fire Ex nguisher Use Essen al training for staff who undertake fire marshal du es for the school and for those who will benefit from prac cal experience of using fire ex nguishers. The course is designed to provide an understanding of: How fires start and spread within buildings The role and du es of fire marshals in schools Emergency evacua ons The types of ex nguishers and the fires on which they can be used Prac cal experience of using fire ex nguishers in a live fire situa on. Date: 20 March 2019 Time: 9.00 to 12.30 Loca on: Croxteth Room, Premier Court, Ha on Garden Tea/coffee is not provided. This training can also be delivered at your school if you have a minimum of 8 par cipants and a suitable loca on to site the demonstra on equipment. Stand alone fire ex nguisher training is also available on request. 17
